NORTH AMERICAN FOAL CROP UP NEARLY 2%By Eric Mitchell
The Jockey Club in its annual report of live foals
announced Sept. 17 that North America's foal
crop for 2015 is up 1.9% from 2014 to 22,104.
Among U.S. states producing at least 100
Thoroughbred foals in 2015, Ohio and Maryland
reported the most dramatic growth in their foal
crops. Ohio's crop is up 25% to 148 and Maryland
grew 20% to 433. They are the only ones among
16 states, three Canadian provinces, and Puerto
Rico with at least 100 foals that saw double-digit
growth.
The Jockey Club registry estimates the number
of live foals reported so far is approximately 90%
complete. The 2015 live foal count is up com-
pared with this time last year when The Jockey
Club had received reports for 21,697 live foals of
2014.
Other states with growing crops include Cal-
ifornia (+8.5%, 1,767); Illinois (+7.0%, 137); Ken-
tucky (+6.9%, 11,853); Washington (+3.0%, 139);
and Florida (+2.8%, 1,629). The areas with the
biggest drop were Puerto Rico (-26%) and Penn-
sylvania (-19%). BH

DECISIONS, DECISIONS FOR LNJ FOXWOODSBy Madison Scott
The family trio of Larry, Nanci, and Jaime Roth who
comprise LNJ Foxwoods thought better of selling
one yearling at Keeneland September, but will offer
another in the fourth session Sept. 18.
The group found the spotlight at the 2014
Keeneland January sale by purchasing Life
Happened, dam of multiple graded stakes
winners Vyjack and Tepin, for $750,000 in
foal to Harlan's Holiday. But the colt from
the mating, Hip 399, was a scratch from the
September sale's Book 1.
"They've decided to race it," said Carl
McEntee, director of sales and bloodstock
at Darby Dan Farm, where LNJ Foxwoods
boards. "With everything going on in that
family, they hope to have the next graded
stakes winner."
LNJ Foxwoods also bred Hip 916, a Med-
aglia d'Oro colt out of Hi Dubai, a full sister
to 2001 Cartier Horse of the Year Fantastic
Light. "He's an American-looking horse,"
McEntee said. "People pay too much atten-
tion to whether a horse looks turfy or dirt. He has got
a nice step, sets his hind leg well, and really strides
out." BH

QUICK RETURNS FOR HARRISON, BLUMBy Glenye Cain Oakford
Consignor Bridie Harrison made a splashy de-
but at Keeneland September, selling five Book
1 horses for her only client, Peter E. Blum. They
grossed $1,985,000 for a $397,000 average and a
$435,000 median.
Harrison worked for Gerry Dilger for 32 years
before hanging out her own shingle a year ago.
She has leased Jim FitzGerald's former Knockgrif-
fin property near Cynthiana, Ky., since January.
That's 425 acres, and Harrison handles breeding,
foaling, and sales prep for Blum.
"Jim FitzGerald planned the farm, and now it's
Hurricane Place Farm," Harrison said. "It's very
well laid out. I've just got the one client on the
farm, and it has worked out really well. He tries to
sell everything but keeps a few because he likes
to race. He has a family he has had seven gener-
MARK CASSE IS A 'PEDIGREE GUY'By Ron Mitchell
Many trainers prefer to look at the yearling
first and catalog page second in trying to find
future racing prospects at public auctions. Not
Mark Casse.
"I'm a big pedigree guy," he said at the Keene-
land September yearling sale. "I've been hearing
from my dad about the importance of pedigree
since I was eight years old."
And Casse's main clients—Ernie Semersky and
Dory Newell of Conquest Stables and John Ox-
ley—are on the same page.
"They will do their pedigree research and let
me know what they want me to look at," Casse
said. For Conquest, Casse will pass along his picks
to the stable's team of advisers to add to their
own list. Though his clients have bought some
Book 1 yearlings with fashionable pedigrees, the
trainer expects them to be more active in subse-
quent sessions.
"We're looking for athletes with some pedigree,
so we'll be more active later," Casse said. "We'll
be here for a good long time." BH

KEENELAND HIPS TO WATCH: SESSION 4By Ian Tapp
Keeneland's Sept. 18 fourth session begins
Book 2 and features Allied Bloodstock's More
Than Ready full sister to Zindaya, a two-time
stakes winner this year at Belmont Park. Out
of the Kris S. mare Aristocratic Lady, Hip 772
is also a half sister to Jamaica Handicap (gr. IT)
winner Western Aristocrat.
From Eaton Sales' consignment is Hip 858,
a full brother the 2011-12 Canadian champion
sprinter Essence Hit Man. The Speightstown
colt represents the only other time the dam, El
Prado Essence, was bred back to the sire.
Gainesway's Hip 900, a colt by Unbridled's
Song, gets a nice update thanks to half sister
Delightful Joy (by Tapit), who won the grade III
Monmouth Oaks since the catalog.
Hip 903, consigned by Baccari Bloodstock, is
a Bodemeister half sister to grade I winner and
young stallion The Factor, whose first yearlings
have been well received in 2015. The filly was
a $160,000 weanling pinhook from last year's
Fasig-Tipton November sale. BH

is making headlines due to her famous

well be holding the winning hand when it
comes to 2-year-old fillies.
In addition to Del Mar Debutante (gr. I)
winner Songbird, who has looked spectac-
ular in her two starts, Porter Sept. 14 un-
leashed Southern Girl, a daughter of Tapit
and a half sister to 2013 Breeders' Cup

Southern Girl broke last in the six-furlong

to win by 1 1/2 lengths.

she wound up running seven furlongs in this one,"
Porter said.

DARLEY SIRES DOMINATE AUSSIE STAKESBy Tara Madgwick
Darley-based sires dominated stakes racing in Sydney
and Melbourne last weekend with seven wins from
the 11 black-
type races on
offer. Among
their successes
were group I
victories for
the exciting
colt Exosphere
(Lonhro) in the
$1 million ATC
Golden Rose
and veteran
8-year-old
gelding Fawkner (Reset), who claimed his third group I
win in the VRC Makybe Diva Stakes.
Exosphere is the second Golden Rose winner for
Lonhro, who sired another Darley homebred colt in Den-
man to win the race in 2009. As a result of Exosphere's
win, Lonhro has now surged to the top of the Australian
general sires' list.
Possibly the most impressive of all the Darley sired
stakes winners was the quality mare Winx (Street Cry),
who produced a scintillating last-to-first win in the group
II ATC Theo Marks Stakes. A dominant winner of the
group I BRC Queensland Oaks in her last run before a
rest, Winx is now the favorite for the $1 million group I
ATC Epsom Handicap Oct. 3. BH
TRIPPI FINDING SUCCESS IN SOUTH AFRICABy Sarah Whitelaw
With the new South African racing season for
2015-16 underway, Drakenstein Stud's resident
sire Trippi has made a flying start.
Trippi, also broodmare sire of recent U.S. grade I
winner Liam's Map, had no fewer than five winners
over the past weekend and is rapidly climbing the
sires' list. The winners for Trippi, South Africa's leading
sire of 3-year-olds by stakes wins last season, include
the very promising 3-year-old Fifty Cents and Trip To
Heaven, who looks like a leading contender for some
of the country's top sprints later in the year.
Trippi, who stands for a fee of R120,000 ($9,000),
is currently South Africa's leading sire by number of
wins for the season. He has been represented by
20 stakes winners in South Africa thus far, with his
tally including
group I win-
ners Afrika-
burn, For the
Lads, and
Inara, as well
as champion
Hammie's
Hooker. Anoth-
er son of Trip-
pi, last season's
group III Winter
Derby winner Liquid Mercury, is destined to continue
his career in Dubai in 2016. BH

ACTIVE TRADE PRELUDE TO AUTUMN SALEBy Naohiro Goda
The catalog for the HBA Autumn sale Oct. 5-6 at
Shizunai in Hokkaido will offer 524 yearlings,
including the dispersal from Tosho Bokujo, which will
sell 10 yearlings. It is the smallest catalog in 10 years,
but HBA officials said fewer yearlings are left unsold
after active trade at the July and Summer sales.
The feature of the sale is Hip 99, a colt by Empire
Maker, who is represented by seven yearlings at the
sale. Meanwhile, the Hashimoto Bokujo consignment
has a half brother to Hiruno d'Amour, winner of
group I Emperor's Cup.
Hip 344, a colt by Dance in the Dark—one of
successful successors of Sunday Silence—is also a
candidate for sale-topper. And the Symboli Stud con-
signment will offer a half bother to group I NHK Mile
Cup winner Symboli Indy.
So far this year at Japanese yearling sales, gross
increased 18% at the JRHA auction in July, 11% at the
HBA July sale, and 23% at the HBA Summer sale. BH

A FEW QUESTIONS WITH PHIL HAGERBy Ian Tapp
Today's MarketWatch interview is with Crest-
wood Farm's Phil Hager, who handles stallion
seasons, bloodstock services, and sales recruit-
ment. Recently Hager got off to a promising
start as a buying agent with Site Read, a July 25
debut Saratoga maiden winner for owner/train-
er Bill Mott. Hager picked out the son of Crest-
wood stallion Tizdejavu at last year's Keeneland
September sale for $32,000. The colt ran fourth
in the Sept. 2 With Anticipation Stakes (gr. IIT)
and is pointing to the Oct. 4 Bourbon Stakes (gr.
IIIT) at Keeneland.
Blood-Horse Daily: What led up to you
buying the colt for Bill Mott?
Hager: I've worked sales for a couple years
where I'll give him a short list, but this was the
first big horse that I've signed for myself. We
had a leg up on (Tizdejavu) knowing that they
were running well. Travis Durr, who works for
Webb Carroll, and I were working the sale to-
gether and we both really liked the horse. Travis
wanted to pinhook him, but we didn't have
enough money.
Since I was looking for Bill, I tried to get one
of his clients to buy the horse, but he didn't
want a turf horse. I told Bill that I really liked the
horse and sent him some photos, but he really
didn't tell me anything until right before he sold.
Just when we thought we didn't have any money
for the horse, walking up the chute (from the
back ring) I get a call from Bill, and he tells me
to go to $50,000. We were able to get him for
$32,000.
It meant so much that Bill and his son Riley
trusted me, and they did a great training job.
BHD: Does this early success help your
credibility at the sales?
Hager: It helps. I got a lot of texts and calls
about it. But it was only a maiden winner. Some
new people have asked me to help them at the
sales. I grew up in the business and I've wanted
to do this for a while, but I had been asking peo-
ple if they need any help at the sales and usually
you don't hear back or they already have some-
one. But now, a lot of those people I reached
out to earlier are starting to contact me.
BHD: Generally what type of horse do you
look for?
Hager: Everybody's looking for a good-look-
ing horse. If you look at a field for a grade I race,
they're all generally very good looking. But I'm
not as big on the front end. I'll forgive a lot if
they're not perfect in front as long as they track
well. I think you can get some discounts that
way. But I need a horse to be very strong behind
because half the time when they go off or get
lame, it starts behind.
Most of the values are later in the sale, but
if you have someone who can spend $100,000-
$150,000, Book 1 is actually a good place to buy
horses that slip through because people tend to
compare all the horses in Book 1 to each other
instead of comparing them to the general pop-
ulation. If you can be patient, you can find one
here or there at great value. BH
