Belief in Destiny Either Good or Bad

• Taqdeer

• Al-Qadar ( q-d-r) ( To measure out, measure or standard)

• Divine Decree, Predestination

• Fate, lot.

Page 4: 5th Lecture Taqdeer

• Qadar is one of the aspect of Aqidah (Belief)• Devine Destiny is when God wrote down in the

Preserved Tablet ( Al-Lawhu’l-Mahfuz) all that has happened and will happen, which will come to pass as written.

• A person’s action is not caused by what is written in the Preserved Tablet.

Page 5: 5th Lecture Taqdeer

• The action is written in the Preserved Tablet due to the fact that Allah Almighty knows all occurrences without restriction of time.

• God is Omniscient and therefore has foreknowledge of all possible futures.

Page 6: 5th Lecture Taqdeer

• Standard--- Law of nature1. Amr (God’s world of command, planning

and direction)• Kun-fayakoon---”be” and “it becomes”• e.g. it is beyond human beings to know

how the universe came into existence from nothing.

2. Kahalaq (God’s created World i.e., the physical universe)

Page 7: 5th Lecture Taqdeer

• After the creation it enters the world of Khalq and follows definitive patterns (laws) which Allah prescribed for it.

• Law of Gravity

Surah Al-Hijr

And there is not a thing but its (sources and) treasures (inexhaustible) are with Us; but We only send down thereof in due and ascertainable measures.

Surah Tauba

Say: "Nothing will happen to us except what Allah has decreed for us: He is our protector": and on Allah let the Believers put their trust.

Surah Ibrahim

We sent not an apostle except (to teach) in the language of his (own) people, in order to make (things) clear to them. Now Allah leaves straying those whom He pleases and guides whom He pleases: and He is Exalted in power, full of Wisdom.

Surah Al-Hijar

Never did We destroy a population that had not a term decreed and assigned beforehand.

Taqdeer is based on four things

1. Knowledge,(Amr) i.e. that Allah knows what His creation will do, by virtue of His eternal knowledge

2. Writing,i.e.that Allah has written the Destiny of all creatures in Al-Lahwh-ul-Mahfooz

3. Will,i.e. that what Allah wills happens and what He does not will not happen. There is nothing in the heavens and the earth but it happens by His Will

4. Creation and Formation,(Khalaq) i.e. that Allah is the Creator of aal things, including the actions of

Types of Taqdeer

1. Muallaq. (Revocable)

Written in Preserved Tablet and subject to change and alteration through the omission and commission of certain deeds.

e.g. lifespan if a person is 50 years.

2. Muallaq Sahbie-e-Mubram.

Changabale if the most pious personalities (like Prophets and Saints) pray to Allah Almighty.

Page 14: 5th Lecture Taqdeer

3. Mubram (Irrevocable) Utal This destiny denotes the eternal

knowledge of Allah. It encompasses the final result of the Muallaq destiny i.e. our choice of actions, their consequences and every precise detail of our lives. This definite knowledge of Allah is not subject to change or alter even slightly and is exclusive to Allah only.

Results

• Our supplications do change our destiny

• Good deeds are a source of increase in ones sustenance and avert calamities.

• Sins result in a decrease in ones sustenance, and invite calamities.

Page 16: 5th Lecture Taqdeer

Locus of Control• Developed originally Julian Rotter in 1950s.• Considered an important aspect of personality.• It refers to an individual's perception about the

underlying main causes of events in his/her life.• It is a belief about whether the outcomes of our

actions are contingent (dependant, conditional) on what we do or on events outside our personal control.

Page 17: 5th Lecture Taqdeer

External Locus of Control

• Individual believes that his/her behavior is guided by fate, luck, or other external circumstances

Page 18: 5th Lecture Taqdeer

Internal Locus of Control

• Indivisual believes that his/her behaviour is guided by his/her personal decisions and efforts.
