And I say, Zangief you are bad guy, but this does not mean you are *bad* guy”. It refers to an untroubled bad guy, who is convincing others that in order to make a partnership work there needs to be conflict and the role of the ‘bad guy’. If you have not seen the movie, then this may seem a somewhat gruesome quote to reference, fortunately a humorous under- tone softens this statement considerably. Whatever your thoughts of Zangief’s ideology, there may be some merit worth consideration. Raising children is never easy. Sometimes easier, sometimes hard- er, but never easy. We may find ourselves in the role of the ‘bad guy’. We may need to say ‘no’. We may get dirty looks, eye rolls, hmmpffs, door slams and the occasional ‘I don’t like you anymore’. If we are saying ‘no’ for their safety, to learn self-control, moderation or economic reasons, these are good reasons! At times, we need to be the ‘bad guy’ for our children’s success. Consistency is the key to forming positive habits and avoiding self-destructive patterns. Saying ‘no’ to a negative behaviour today and then allowing it tomorrow, creates confusion and will cause disruptive behaviours in the future. This behaviour can be called ‘testing the fences’ and it is most prevalent in young children. Like steers that wander and lean on the fences to test their integrity, kids will see what they can get away with today. If we are consistent, our integrity will hold, ‘no’ means ‘no’. Congratulations on con- tinuing with an incredibly rewarding and challenging job of raising young children! If we can consistently stand tall, say ‘no’ and guide our children to develop positive habits and life skills, further congratulations and thanks is extended. Reward for Effort- Positive Behaviour for Learning In continuing our commitment to have full implementation of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) at Currumbin Valley State School, we are regularly developing, revising and upskilling our behaviour management processes to better reflect the needs of our students. A fundamental priority in this process is to explicitly teach acceptable behaviour and to continually reinforce these behaviours. The strength is in the consistent implementation across all classrooms and year levels both inside and outside the classroom. Reinforcing expected school behaviour Expectations are communicated to students via a number of strategies including: Positive Behaviour reinforcement methods (verbal feedback, tokens). Behaviour and values lessons conducted by classroom teachers Reinforcement of learning from behaviour lessons at School Assemblies and during active supervision by staff during classroom and non-classroom activities Individualised, intensive support for more specific on-going cases Use of classroom behaviour walls and visual displays. At Currumbin Valley State School, communication of our key messages about behaviour are delivered through positive reinforcement, which provides students with feedback for engaging in expected school behaviour. A formal recognition and monitoring system has been developed. This reinforcement system is designed to increase the quantity and quality of positive interactions between students and staff. Reinforcing positive behaviour is considered the most effective behaviour management strategy, when we acknowledge positive behaviours and choices, we empower our children to repeat them. Catching our children in the act of making good choices and positively recognising these choices has a lasting impact and significantly increases the likelihood of our children repeating these behaviours in the future. Of course our end goal is for our children to make these choices intrinsically (internal values) but for many, first they must be learnt and be reinforced using some extrinsic (external) motivators. A focus within PBL last week: “Treat everyone with kindness & respect, even those who are rude to you, not because they are nice but because you are! The Man & The Cat (a story shared on parade last week) One day, a man was walking by a road when he heard a cat meowing from the bushes nearby. The cat was stuck and needed help getting out. When the man reached out, the cat got scared and scratched the man. The man screamed in pain but didn’t back down. He tried again and again, even as the cat continued to scratch his hands. Another passerby saw this and said, “Just let it be! The cat will find a way to come out later”. The man didn’t pay heed but tried until he helped the cat. Once he let the cat free, he told the other man, “The cat is an animal, and its instincts make him scratch and attack. I am a human and my instincts make me compassionate and kind”.

Reinforcing expected school behaviour Expectations are communicated to students via a number of strategies including: • Positive Behaviour reinforcement methods (verbal feedback, tokens). • Behaviour and values lessons conducted by classroom teachers • Reinforcement of learning from behaviour lessons at School Assemblies and during active

supervision by staff during classroom and non-classroom activities • Individualised, intensive support for more specific on-going cases • Use of classroom behaviour walls and visual displays.

THE POWER OF KINDNESS: A message to our students Most young people like the idea of having some power in their lives. Let me explain how kindness is one of the most rewarding forms of power you can have. What is kindness? What does it mean? Kindness is helping someone without expecting anything in return. It is when we are friendly, thoughtful and generous. It is like snow; it makes everything it covers beautiful. What does kindness look like? Here are some examples. When a student is new to the school and is feeling lonely because they haven’t made any friends yet and you invite them to join your game in the play break. When someone is really embarrassed because they came last in their race on sports day and you run up to encourage them and congratulate them for having a go and trying their best. When someone is sad because their pet dog died last night and you give up your play break to spend some time comforting them. There are so many opportunities every day to show kindness. Kindness has great power. Your brief moment of kindness has the power to change someone’s life forever. Just imagine, several years from now someone coming up to you and saying, “Hey, I remember you. When I was a student at Currumbin Valley State School in 2020, I was very shy and didn’t feel confident about trying any sport. You encouraged me to have a go at things I didn’t think I could do well, and now I am playing for the high school team.” Here is something you may not know about kindness. It also has the power to change your life. If you give kindness to others, you will have a good feeling yourself. You can’t have kind-ness flowing through you to someone else, without that experience lifting you up to a higher level of happiness. You will find that it is very hard to remain sad or angry when you are being kind to others. Try it out and see how it works for you. Find some ways to be kind to your parents, your brothers and sisters, your teachers and your class mates. See how happy it makes you. Parent Teacher (PHONE) Interviews Term 3 Week 7 – Tuesday & Wednesday 25th Aug- 26th Aug 2020 As part of Currumbin Valley State School’s overall reporting process, Parent-Teacher inter-views are being held this term. Parent-Teacher interviews are an opportunity for home and school to work collaboratively together to ensure the very best outcomes for our children. We would greatly encourage all interested parents to participate in this opportunity. Due to COVID restrictions, these interviews will take place via a telephone conference. While this is not our preferred mode of communication, it has been deemed suitable at this point in time. Our staff continue to maintain a strong commitment towards upholding key calendar events this term. At times, this commitment has required a certain level of adaptability and we very much appreci-ate your understanding and support. Bookings open next Thursday 13th August @ 9:00am! A link will be sent home via email and posted on Facebook next week! Please note: Bookings close 5pm Thursday 20th August 2020 REMINDER: ARRIVE EARLY BUT NOT TOO EARLY! Just a reminder that school starts at 9:00 and we expect that children make every effort to get to class on time. Being 10-20 minutes early is a great idea and gives your child time to settle and socialise. Staff are only available for supervision from 8:30 onwards – If circumstances require you to drop your children off prior to 8:30am please contact the principal.

Dental Health Week – How much sugar is hiding in your trolley? Being healthy is something that most of us aim for. Sugar is everywhere in supermarket staples, even some that might appear to be healthy on the surface, and so this Dental Health Week (3 - 9 August dentalhealthweek.com.au), we want you to become more “sugar savvy”. Figures show that the average Australian is con-suming 14 teaspoons of sugar a day, a whole lot more than the maximum six teaspoons a day recommended by the World Health Organisation. Beyond that, we want to show how easy it is to keep your teeth and gums healthy by following a few simple tips: Brushing, Flossing, eat and drink well and say ‘Hello!’ to your dentist. https://www.goldcoast.health.qld.gov.au/our-services/oral-health

Operating Guidelines –COVID-19 (as per department policy)

Physical distancing within schools

Schools will continue to encourage staff, parents and other adult visitors to observe physical distancing measures by not con-gregating in areas inside or around the school. For example, it is important that parents do not gather before or after school, in the car park, at drop off and pick up time, out-side classrooms or at the school gate. Schools will continue to practise physical distancing and minimise interaction of students and adults within the school and at school entry points including: • restricting adult (including visitors

and parent) access to school grounds.

• supervision at school gates, includ-ing during drop off and pick up times and supervised movements between the school gate and class-rooms.

• minimising adult access to office environments and recommending contact be made to the school via electronic means.

CURRUMBIN VALLEY STATE SCHOOL P&C

FUN RUN Saturday 12 September

1pm Dear Parent/Guardian, We will be holding our 10K-4-10K School Fun Run event on Saturday 12 September 2020 starting at 1pm, to help raise funds for our school. The course for the run will be around the school, and through a marked track on the oval. We will have parents, helpers and teachers on hand to assist the kids and there will be a sausage sizzle after the run. About the Program The School Fun-Run promotes healthy and active lifestyles while helping us raise funds! It’s all about participation, with students treated to a great day as a reward for their fundraising efforts. Family support is key to our fundraising success and we encourage everyone to get involved. How Does My Child Fundraise? Each student will be sent home with a fundraising sponsorship form. Everything to do with your fundraising revolves around this page. Students are asked to get as many sponsors as possible. You can either sponsor a child to run a certain distance (eg. $5 per km) or a total amount. The best people to ask for sponsorship are people you know (e.g. friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours). Students who raise just $10 will receive a reward for their effort. The more they raise, the better their reward. You can choose to promote fundraising on social media profiles, or email amongst people you know. Cash fundraising is also available. Getting Involved Not only can you support the school and students with your sponsorship – but you can join in on the fun! We would love to welcome parents and family members to attend the School Fun-Run. If you would also like to volunteer to help on the day, please contact us at: [email protected]. We can’t wait to see you at our event!
