purpose of the general management and river management plan is to ensure that the park and river managers have a clearly defined direction to protect re-sources and to provide public access.”

What can we do? Each one of us can fill out the survey provided in the Big Bend newsletter (call 915-477-2251 to have a newsletter mailed to you) You can also send me email at [email protected] and I will send you a .pdf file that you can print, fill out and mail to the NPS. Also, Ken and I will have copies of the survey available at the next meeting. The survey wants to asses what you value most about the park, how you want to see the park 20 years

from now, what concerns you have, and what part of the Harte Ranch you want to see recommended for wilder-ness designation.

The National Park Service is accepting surveys to help them create a general management and river management plan for the future of Big Bend Na-tional Park and the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River. From the Spring 2000 Newsletter:

“The National Park Service (NPS) is starting to plan for the future of Big Bend national Park and the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River… The new plans and study will be used to guide the management of Big Bend National Park and Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River for the next 10 to 15 years. In developing these plans, NPS staff will work closely with federal, state, and local agencies, interested parties, and the general public.”

DDRC Officers & Committees To spruce up the fraction of the

course not reached by the Lamb fam-ily, a pre-race Trinity Cleanup was held August 26 with the collection of 10 fully stuffed bags of litter by 8 volunteers. Many thanks go to Nad-ine Bourg, Glen Pye, Neil Licalsi, Allen Scott, Susie Deubeck, Chris Cockrell, Betty Scott, and Alan Tit-tle. We nearly finished what the Lambs have not. Cold watermelon served as a welcome refresher after-wards. After picking up 70....(?) bags of trash almost individually David, Alan and Rachel Lamb took the weekend off from their routine to paddle in another race - time off for extraordinary behavior.

Volunteers needed. A few volunteer

positions still need to be filled; river-side safety, sweep boats, race tim-ing, spotting, records, dinner, bake sale, shuttles and back up support staff. Most positions are light duty. Safety assistance would be especially helpful from those that have had the river rescue class, first aid or CPR training.

Questions? Contact Alan Tittle at (972) 727-3586 or e-mail [email protected] for more informa-tion on racing or volunteering.

Sponsors This race would be im-possible without our sponsors, who donate lots of great stuff for the raf-fle! Read about our wonderful spon-sors on Page 2! "
