Welcome

Dear Delegate,

I’d like to personally welcome each of you to IBioIC’s 5th Annual Conference, IB for a Sustainable Future. This is our first conference since launching our Phase II Business Plan in September 2018 and we are excited by the challenges that the future holds for us and our members over the next five years. This conference is a perfect opportunity to make new contacts, share ideas, successes and challenges and learn about the latest developments in the both the Scottish and UK IB scene.

Over the next two days, you’ll hear from industry leaders, public sector and academic experts who will highlight their ideas, knowledge and experience within their fields, as well as attend thought provoking plenary sessions full of exciting announcements on future plans which are set to take place within the sector in 2019.

As IBioIC’s conference has grown, so have the various events and activities taking place around it. This year, we have brought all of these activities together as the IBioIC Annual Conference “Fringe”. Alongside our regular 1-2-1 partnering opportunities, we are offering delegates the opportunity to arrange on-site meetings with a range of investors via our partnering app, attend the Networking Breakfast for delegates interested in Wood Biorefinery, attend a National Physical Laboratory workshop on Wednesday afternoon, and the SCI Charles Tennant Memorial Lecture, which will be given this year by Ingenza’s Dr Ian Fotheringham, after Thursday’s closing plenary.

We will also be hosting the first meeting of the BBSRC Phase II NIBBs after their introduction at Thursday’s morning plenary. It’s a packed programme and I would urge you to review the schedule of conference and “fringe” events taking place over the next two days to make sure you take full advantage of the opportunities on offer. Our exhibition and poster area will once again be central to the event. With even more exhibition stands and poster displays on both floors of the exhibition area this year, this is a fantastic opportunity to find out more on what’s going on in the world of IB.

Before I close, I’d like to thank each of you for attending our conference and bringing your expertise to our gathering. You have the vision, the knowledge, the wherewithal and the experience to help us pave our way into the future. You are truly our greatest asset today and tomorrow, and we could not accomplish what we do without your support and leadership. Throughout this conference, I ask you to stay engaged, keep proactive and help us shape the future of industrial biotechnology.

General Information Our MSc students need you!Can your company offer an interesting work placement to our cohort of MSc students between May – July 2019? If so, we’d love to hear from you!

The benefits to you:• Access free of charge, the energy and

enthusiasm of a young, motivated MSc student looking to learn about your company

• Undertake that investigative piece of work that’s still waiting to get started using the students knowledge, skills & experience

• Motivate employees by involving them in the industrial placement to act in a management role

• Identify potential future hires and help to support a pipeline of talent for the IB industry

“We find having new people in the lab is always positive, getting access to expertise and knowledge and finding out different perspectives to research problems. The results that the MSc students have provided have been very useful for our business.”

CELLUCOMP, IBIOIC INDUSTRIAL PARTNER

All this experience and knowledge that I gained this year helped me in my career path in the science field and right after the end of my placement I had a job offer by one of the world’s largest clinical laboratory services provider.

About the speakerIan Fotheringham received a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Glasgow, UK, in 1986. He then joined the NutraSweet division of Monsanto in Chicago, USA, before developing large scale bioprocesses with NSC Technologies and Great Lakes Fine Chemicals. In 2003 he co-founded Ingenza, a leading Industrial Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology company, with an extensive and unique range of proprietary enabling technologies in microbial strain and cell line improvement, fermentation and bioprocess development.

SynopsisFor centuries Industrial Biotechnology has been used to employ micro-organisms to manufacture products such as fermented foods and drinks. With the increased ability to systematically engineer the genetics and biochemistry of biological systems, particularly microbes, we have the potential to meet a vast range of growing human needs, from competitive, sustainable manufacturing to combating anti-microbial resistance and helping to meet future food and energy requirements.

The seminar will describe Ingenza’s harmonising of chemo-enzymatic chemical synthesis and scalable biomanufacturing with biotechnology tools that aim to address blood coagulation disorders, antimicrobial peptide discovery and novel medical devices and diagnostics.
