In addition to conducting field studies on the Missouri River floodplain, Mojave Desert, and Egypt, he has been instrumental in development andimplementation of both orbital and landed missions to the planets, including participation in theMagellan RadarOrbiter Mission to Venus, Team Leader for the Vikings Lander Imaging System on Mars, member of the ProjectScience Group for the Mars Global Surveyor Mission, Deputy Principal Investigator for the highly successful MarsRover Missions (Spirit and Opportunity), the Robotic Arm Co-Investigator (aka “Dig Czar”) for the Mars PhoenixLander Mission, Co-Investigator for the hyper-spectral mappers OMEGA (European Mars Express orbiter) andCRISM (on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter) and a Science Team Member (and mobility specialist or “WagonMaster”) for the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover that landed on Mars in August 2012. He is also the Director of the NASA Planetary Data System Geosciences Node, making available ~300 terabytes of NASA data to the worldwide research community. Professor Arvidson has won many awards from NASA and scientific societies,and was honored as the Missouri Teacher of the Year.

McDonnell Distinguished UniversityProfessor at Washington University in St. Louis, where he has been employed since 1974, focusing on teaching andresearch about current and past environments on the Earth, Mars, and Venus. In addition to conducting field studies on the Missouri River floodplain, Mojave Desert, and Egypt, he has been instrumental in development andimplementation of both orbital and landed missions to the planets, including participation in theMagellan RadarOrbiter Mission to Venus, Team Leader for the Vikings Lander Imaging System on Mars, member of the ProjectScience Group for the Mars Global Surveyor Mission, Deputy Principal Investigator for the highly successful MarsRover Missions (Spirit and Opportunity), the Robotic Arm Co-Investigator (aka “Dig Czar”) for the Mars PhoenixLander Mission, Co-Investigator for the hyper-spectral mappers OMEGA (European Mars Express orbiter) andCRISM (on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter) and a Science Team Member (and mobility specialist or “WagonMaster”) for the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity Rover that landed on Mars in August 2012. He is also the Director of the NASA Planetary Data System Geosciences Node, making available ~300 terabytes of NASA data to the worldwide research community. Professor Arvidson has won many awards from NASA and scientific societies,and was honored as the Missouri Teacher of the Year.
