Type 5840 is a single cartridge seal that encompasses many of
the advantages associated with heavy duty seal design,
encased in a more cost effective package. Designed for the
volume requirements associated with general mineral
processing duties, robust seal face materials make this
offering the perfect general purpose seal for slurry and
abrasive applications. The rugged construction allows for ease
of use, ease of maintenance and ease of operation. The Type
5840 is fully exchangeable as a cartridge with other seals
designed for the same pump types. Components are also fully
interchangeable between other seals of the same group size.

Dynamic Sealing Pressure RatingThe dynamic sealing pressure rating assumes stable
operation at the speeds indicated on the rating charts
below. When used with the multiplier factors, the
dynamic pressure rating can be adjusted to provide
a conservative estimate of the dynamic pressure
rating for alternate pump operating conditions. For
the Type 5840 the maximum dynamic sealing
pressure is 21 barg / 300 psig. For services outside
this range, contact John Crane Engineering.

Optimised Running Face Design• Premium-grade silicon carbide as standard
• Robust pin drive gives positive torque transmission
• Hydraulically balanced for optimum performance
• Face design optimised using proprietary computer
simulation program technology
• Identical faces mounted as stationary or rotary face
Maximum Flexibility• Available in 6 seal group sizes
• Maximum interchangeability of key parts across
each group size
• Can be fitted to shaft diameters from 35mm to
220mm (1.378" to 8.661")
• Manufactured from materials resistant to abrasive
and/or chemical attack
• Can be fitted to most slurry handling equipment
• Cartridge assembly for easy installation and
pump adjustment
• Requires no water flush so reduces process dilution
• Requires no support system for successful
operation
• Designed for long service life in hostile
environments
Non Clogging Cone
Spring Design• Profile of the cone spring assembly has
been designed to remain effective and
even resist scale build up or product
ingress that would render normal
springs or bellows inoperable
• Provides constant, positive pressure to the sealing
faces under all operating and hydraulic conditions
Non Dynamic Secondary Seals• No shaft fretting and damage
• No hang-up of primary seal faces
