Shalom Chaverim!

This edition of our bi-monthly bulletin represents our first formal communication with the Shul community in our new programmatic year, 2018-19 or 5778-79. As such, it is a unique opportunity to formally introduce the theme we have selected for the New Year: Atideynu 2.0: Imagining our Jewish Future.

Clearly, this theme piggybacks on the name of the renovation, refurbishment and enhancement campaign that we are in the process of undertaking at our beloved Congregation B’nai Amoona campus - Atideynu. However, physical improvements, as desperately needed and crucial as they are to our institutional health, are not the end game.

Our lay and professional leadership understand that ultimately the wellbeing and flourishing of a Synagogue are based on the spiritual/religious and educational experiences it provides and social action, community service and social opportunities and connections it catalyzes. Aesthetics are wonderful, but content is far more consequential. As our wise Rabbis taught: “Al Tistakel BaKankan, Elah BeMah Sheyesh Bo – Do not focus exclusively on the vessel, rather take careful note of its contents” (Pirkei Avot 4:20).

As we consider the future of our Kehillah, Community and People, we would be wise to hearken to the insight of the late Rabbi Dr. Abraham Joshua Heschel who in his magnum-opus, God In Search of Man, boldly challenges us to consider the fact that: “We are the only channel of Jewish Tradition, those who must save Judaism from oblivion, those who must hand over the entire past to generations to come. We are either the last, the dying, Jews or else we are those who will give new life to our tradition. Rarely in our history has so much depended upon one generation. We will either forfeit or enrich the legacy of the ages”.

During the High Holy Day season, we will begin to explore the challenges and opportunities that face us - and the entire Jewish World. Our sermons on Yom Tov, continuing education classes, visiting scholar programs, as well as our formal and informal educational and inculcative programs for children and youth, will all gear themselves towards understanding the realities of our current era and begin to dream the dreams of what we want - and need - to become as we look forward to a blessed future.

I invite you all to join us in the exciting undertaking. May we be inspired by the words of the prophet Joel (3:1): "After that, I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; and your children shall gain insight and your elders shall dream dreams”.

With blessings for a Shanah Tovah U’Metukah – a good and sweet New Year! One filled with visions and dreams for of Atideynu, our glorious future! Paulie, Noa, Zakai, Lev and Ellior join me in wishing you all a Good Yontiff!

With optimism and love,

From Rabbi Carnie Shalom Rose

“Shiru Ladonai Shir Chadash.” “Sing a new song to God.” Two of our Kabbalat Shabbat Psalms, (96 and 98) begin with these words. This spring, a dozen men literally learned to sing new songs to God. We began rehearsing all the way back in February, learning the melodies and words of the Kabbalat Shabbat service. Then Friday night, May 4, after a full three months of rehearsing and learning, this dedicated group of men led a service full of incredible energy, song and community. And the energy, song, and feeling of community flowed right into the Shabbat dinner that followed. I am so impressed how each of these men, busy with work and families, made it a priority to gather together to sing and learn week after week. I look forward to continued opportunities for them to bring their talent and energy to our Shabbat experiences. To all the men who participated, Yash’ir Kochachem! May your learning continue and may it inspire others to follow your example.

B’nai Amoona is definitely a place where Jews connect with their Judaism, but it is also a place where Jews connect with one another, as illustrated by the group of men who learned and laughed together. This is a place where we forge meaningful relationships and build community. In these times, when we can connect electronically to more people than ever, more people are actually feeling disconnected and alone. We are confronted repeatedly with the research showing that the more time teens spend on social media, the more depressed they are. Several articles, based on

research, have gone so far as to state that this loneliness is killing us. Nurturing meaningful, face to face social connections is imperative for our emotional and physical health. Being part of a community like B’nai Amoona, where we have the opportunity to nurture our spiritual inner life and our intellectual life, to serve the greater community, and to create a web of real relationships, not virtual ones, is such a blessing.

The approaching High Holy Days present opportunities to nurture our spiritual and intellectual life, to serve the community and to create relationships. Selichot, which falls this year on the Saturday night of Labor Day weekend, is a beautiful, music-filled late night service during which we change the regular Torah covers to the white High Holy Day covers. So while we prepare to change the Torah covers, symbolic of how we change ourselves, we are able to think about what those changes may be. On Yom Kippur afternoon at the musical Contemplative Service, (also known as the Healing Service), in community and in relationship with one another, we look inward and outward at the same time. What meaningful relationships will we nurture this year? What kind of inner life do we want to have? What will we take with us into this New Year? What can we leave behind? Let’s be truly present to one another, face to face, soul to soul as we look ahead and ask ourselves: what is the new song we will sing to God?

4Congregation B’nai Amoona Bulletin July/August 2018

Greetings Friends! Shalom Chaverim!

I’m going to borrow an idea of a colleague, Rabbi Shira Rosenblum, and write this article on the “Reflections of a One-Year-Old Rabbi.” I’ve had many really incredible experiences over the past year as a Rabbi, and I learned some very important lessons along the way. I thought this article might be a wonderful opportunity to share some of these experiences and insights.

Last summer, I started working a month earlier than the rest of my classmates because our beloved Rabbi Carnie Rose had to undergo radiation and oral chemotherapy. Our community responded with such a gigantic amount of support and prayers that it was truly inspirational to see the how much love and care we all provided when someone was in need. This experience was repeated time and time again throughout the year in vastly different circumstances. When people had a need for help, our sacred community, our Kehillah Kedoshah, provided that help in spades. When tragedy struck families we strove to make sure those families were taken care of as best as we were able.

Taking care of people is one of the main missions of my rabbinate, which I give in a unique way to each and every individual. Whether it means comforting campers or B’nai Mitzvah students, visiting people in hospitals or nursing homes, attending Shivah Minyanim, meeting with someone over an aging parent or an anxious child, or making phone calls to new parents, each and every opportunity to provide someone with connection and comfort becomes holy and unique.

You may have noticed in the paragraphs above is how the work of a Rabbi takes place across the lifespan as well as across many different settings. One of the best things about this vocation is being able to be present for people in every stage of their life. This means there are days where we go from celebrating a Bris to learning with a Bat Mitzvah student to honoring loved ones who are no longer with us at a Minyan. There are also the relationships I have built which I am confident will last a lifetime; whether my friends are 13 or 83, I am honored and privileged to be a part of this community and all of the incredible people who belong here.

It was those remarkable individuals who showed me that not only do we take care of people here, but that we also celebrate with them. Meira and I were overjoyed to be able to celebrate with so many of you at our wedding. The overwhelming amount of love we received from so many

meant the world to us and really created a beautiful time of nuptial bliss. This past year I learned people have large hearts, and they love to give and open those hearts, with joy. I have seen this time and again, not only at my own wedding, but at all of the varied celebratory occasions we’ve had here at B’nai Amoona.

In addition to people opening their hearts to others, it has become clear to me that when we are able to put our full heart into our actions, people can’t help but reciprocate. For me this might mean opening up in sermons, teaching adult education classes about my Jewish passions, or sharing stories of a lost loved one with mourners. But in the larger context of the B’nai Amoona community, I have seen passionate staff and volunteers work with all of their hearts for causes they devote themselves to. The love and passion we put into social action projects, celebrating life, attending classes and bettering ourselves, taking care of our friends and family who are ill, and educating our children give a deep context to the famous Hebrew saying: D’varim HaYotzeim Min HaLev, Nichnasim LaLev, actions and which word come from the heart enter the heart.

To summarize, here is what this one-year-old Rabbi has experienced. When someone is in need, regardless of who that person is, we are there. Caring for others happens in the widest array, and most unexpected of places. A clergy person’s privilege is to be present for, and build relationships with, people in all the different circumstances of their life. Celebration comes with community. And, finally, putting our whole hearts into action invites others to do the same.

I hope this upcoming year is filled with insights, experiences, and new found growth for us all.

Gertrude (Gert) Ziglin’s Last Days by Sandy Kaplan

My Mother, known to family and friends as Gertrude, Gertie, Gert and of course, Grandma, lived a long life as she turned 101 last October. On her 100th birthday, we had a big party for her and invited “her world” of people to celebrate this milestone birthday at Delmar Gardens West where she had been living for the past four and a half years. Rabbi Rose was at her party wishing her continued good health and blessings.

Since her 100th birthday, she found the past year and a half more challenging as her health was slowly declining and her eye sight was failing from macular degeneration.

She often talked about dying and joining all of her family members who were deceased. We talked about this quite often, and I would always say, “When God is ready for you, it will be the right time.” Sometimes, she would close her eyes at night and say that maybe this would be the night that she would die. The next morning when she woke up, she said, “I guess God wasn’t ready for me to die yet.”

Over the past three weeks, my Mother stopped eating and drinking less and less each day. My brother suggested that we call in hospice, and with her doctor’s approval, we moved forward with hospice. Last Thursday, as I was driving to the nursing home, I called Rabbi Rose to let him know my Mother’s status. He was actually the first person outside the immediate family I wanted to let know that we were facing the final stage of my Mother’s life.

Shortly after we spoke, Rabbi Rose came to visit my Mom and offered her words of peace and love. When he sang Shalom Aleichem and the Sh’ma, we could tell that she was responding to his beautiful chanting. It was a memory that I will never forget.

The next morning when I arrived, her breaths were less and less until she finally took her last breath and passed away. I called Rabbi Rose to let him know, and he showed up shortly after to talk with my sister, brother and me.

We met with Rabbi Rose that afternoon to prepare the obituary and Shivah information to send out to congregants. We met again on Sunday so that we would have an opportunity to talk to him about my Mother and plan her funeral.

Rabbi Rose’s insight and conversation with family members created such a beautiful funeral for my Mother. He suggested that we get Cantor Nathanson to sing after my sister mentioned that she wanted to read the words from the song, “A Yiddishe Momme.” Our wonderful Cantor ended up singing “A Woman of Valor” as well.

Rabbi Rose spoke such beautiful and meaningful words along with the explanations of our rituals and prayers that are part of the funeral service. At the cemetery, he brought a bag of earth from Israel that was sprinkled on my mother’s casket by her two great-grandchildren.

Our family is so grateful for Rabbi Rose being there for us and guiding us along the steps we needed to take in the midst of our deep sadness and loss of our beloved Mother. He made us all feel loved and supported during this difficult time, and are blessed to have had him by our side.

In gratitude,

Sandy Kaplan and family

Dear B’nai Amoona Family,

Shalom! We have communicated with you on several occasions about our Capital Campaign, Atideynu, and on April 15th we formally kicked off with an outstanding “Groundbreaking Ceremony.”

Now it's time for construction to begin! What does this mean? We will have workmen, equipment, construction materials, fencing, signs, detours, and what can best be described as organized chaos.

During this time, I would like to ask each and every one of us to take a deep breath and understand that our staff, and the contractors we have engaged, are working diligently to make this extensive undertaking happen in as seamless a manner as possible; with minimal disruption to you, our beloved Congregational family. It goes without saying that an endeavor of this magnitude demands a great deal of planning, organization, patience, as well as the cooperation and understanding of all involved.

This would not be a true B’nai Amoona project without adding another layer of complexity. As many of you are aware, the PGA is coming to town. The 100th anniversary of this tournament will be played at Bellerive Country Club the week of August 6 - 12. We have been asked to be one of the “key partners” to help make this exciting event successful. In true B’nai Amoona fashion, we jumped right in and asked what we could do for our St. Louis community. We will be lending our parking lots and fields to help with logistics and for VIP (player, family, and other dignitaries) parking as we offer easy and convenient access to the

venue. This event will be broadcast to 100 countries, and viewership is expected to reach over 100,000,000. This is a big deal in the sporting world. As our facility will be used for VIP access, kindly welcome our guests and their families with respect and warmth.

There will be constant communication as we progress with our renovations, and as the August PGA event moves into full swing. As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Staff and Klei Kodesh for working so hard to find a way to keep our Shul fully functioning during this complicated time. Moreover, I would also like to recognize our lay leaders for the time and unconditional support they have given to our Kehillah. There have been countless meetings with the construction team, as well as with the Capital Campaign committee. Your unwavering dedication is noticed and appreciated. We could not have done this without you. Again, we cannot say it often enough, Thank You! B’nai Amoona members are by far the kindest, nicest, and most grateful people; you are simply the best.

With warmest regards and deepest gratitude,

What is Shomrei Amoonim? It is Congregants reaching out to other Congregants, performing one act of kindness at a time to ensure people feel the love and warmth of our community.

Did you know we reach out to families approximately a month after a loss of a spouse or parent with some soup and Challah? We received the following note from a congregant, which shows how powerful this act can be....

Thank you very much for delivering the care package of soup, Challah and cookies from Shomrei Amoonim to help sustain me after the conclusion of Shloshim. This was a total surprise that really touched my heart as I still feel lost without my mother, of blessed memory. I feel the B’nai Amoona Family has surrounded me with love and protection in my bereavement. I was particularly fragile because my mother passed away, and the funeral, were out of town. Coming back to B’nai Amoona though did indeed feel like coming home. Your surprise visit came just at the right time, a lull in my mourning, but my heart still sore and in need of something. Little did I realize that lentil soup, Challah and cookies, along with a visit and conversation with a B’nai Amoona member, who has been in my place, were exactly the “something” that I needed.

Todah Rabbah to Dottie Ellis and Regina Herzog who make sure we alway have soup and Challah in the freezer. Todah Rabbah to Dottie, who makes most of the post Shloshim deliveries.

Shomrei Amoonim volunteers this spring visited approximately 60 members living in senior facilities for Purim and Yom Ha'atzmaut. Are you ready to join our ranks, to help make another member’s day? If so, contact me!

Member Spotlight

Introducing…MARLA MAYERMarla has been a B'nai Amoona member since she was 8 years old. As soon as Marla walks in the doors of our Synagogue she feels at home. Marla has a web of BA connections, some reaching into the past and other strands more recent. In its nascent years, Marla worked at Camp Ramot Amoona as a counselor, later Amanut (art) Director, and ultimately Assistant Director. Wait, there’s more! Also a beloved Sunday School and Hebrew School teacher for several years, Marla has walked the halls of our building many times over. B’nai Amoona hit the jackpot when Marla’s parents-- Jack and Irma, became members with daughters Ellen, Marla and Susan in tow. After the death of their mother Irma Mayer this past winter, Marla finds comfort honoring her mother’s memory with regular Minchah and Ma’ariv services to say Kaddish. Unequivocally, Marla is a part of the very fabric of our BA community. Childhood friends remain a part of Marla’s life, several are very close, others she sees occasionally and of course there are Facebook friends. Fond memories remain of going to Services on Shabbat and holidays with family back when BA was located on Trinity. Teaching art at Highcroft Ridge Elementary in the Parkway School District for the past 30 years, Marla feels passionate about helping kids build a positive self image, experience joy and create art. Although she doesn’t always have time to create her own projects, art classes provide a creative outlet and make her a better teacher. Flipping the tables and experiencing the challenge of learning a new skill increases her empathy for her students. “It reminds me what it’s like to do something new..how it’s not always easy when first attempted.” Traveling is a favorite interest and Marla’s been all over the globe; cities in Italy as well as Prague, London, Australia, Ecuador, Kenya and Israel, with the Galapagos Islands being her numero uno, “... the most awesome, in the real sense of the word." There are still many places and cultures Marla wants to experience and visiting all of the continents is on her travel bucket list. Her motto: I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list! The perfect day for Marla involves exploring a city she’s never visited and planning her next getaway. Something totally unexpected about Marla? You don’t want to challenge her to a bench press or deadlift competition. Marla can bench press 115 pounds and deadlift 185!

Introducing…ETHAN FINEEthan's favorite thing about B’nai Amoona is Camp Ramot Amoona. 16 year old Ethan just finished up his Sophomore year at Eureka High School in the Rockwood School District. He lives at home with his parents, Jen and Kevin Fine, his twin sister Demi and younger brother Rylie. Ethan’s family connections to B’nai Amoona reach back over several generations. Alright, take a deep breath because Ethan is an unbelievably active young man. He is editor of his school newspaper, quite rare for a Sophomore. “I was hooked” after taking a journalism class Freshman Year. The same week Ethan was designated editor he joined the board of the St. Louis Council of BBYO and if this were not enough (Dayenu) Ethan became the VP of Communications for BAUSY; this being his first year on the board. Ethan is actively involved in both BBYO & USY. He likes both organizations and couldn’t choose just one! His favorite USY activity? The regional conventions where he gets to see all of his friends from the Emtza region. Wait, that’s not all...Ethan takes guitar lessons

and makes time to jam with his friends. When asked about his musical tastes Ethan describes liking everything from classic rock to modern music. Ethan and Demi are extremely close siblings; sharing friends as well as the car. Agreeing on who gets the car is likely the biggest thing the twins disagree and argue about and otherwise live happily under the same roof. This Summer Ethan and his sister are part of a USY journey to Israel, Poland and Prague. Regarding Camp Ramot Amoona, Ethan makes a great spokesperson. He thinks it is the best way to spend your summers. Ethan began at Camp B’nai Ami, graduated to camper status at Ramot Amoona, worked as a CIT at Ramot Amoona and is now the music specialist at Ramot. How wonderful to see the impact B’nai Amoona is having on Ethan and in return the impact Ethan is having on B’nai Amoona. What might surprise us about Ethan? “That I took hip hop lessons from 3rd through 5th grade in school." And finally, we asked Ethan what constitutes a perfect day and he responded with, “traveling anywhere, taking photos and exploring locations you don’t see every day.”

Member SpotlightIntroducing...HEATHER MIEDERHOFFHeather has been a B’nai Amoona member for the past 5 years. This is Heather’s second time as a member, the first was just after her Bat Mitzvah at Traditional Congregation, when her parents joined BA. As a teen Heather was active in BBYO, (a Jewish teen movement) and has memories of dances, overnights, conventions and Tuesday night meetings followed by McDonalds. Heather and her husband Brant met while lifeguarding at the STL JCC in 1994. Both attended Mizzou and continued their friendship over the years. After marrying, they worked in Overland Park, KS for 10 years and upon returning to St. Louis they chose to join BA for the family connection (Heather’s parents remain members) and also because of a fondness for Rabbi Rose and Cantor Nathonson, who welcomed the couple and guided them through Brant’s conversion. Heather and Brant have two children; 12 ½ year old daughter Madison and 8 year old son Brayden. Heather’s favorite thing about BA? The friendly congregants who quickly helped her feel at home. A few friends from her teen years are still members and it’s “neat to see our kids grow up together”. What connects Heather to BA at this stage in life is her children, via the Sunday School and Hebrew School programs. BA is lucky to have Heather serve on the Education Committee. You are most likely to see Heather around the halls of the religious school and on May 26, just prior to this issue of Spotlight, in the main sanctuary for daughter Madison’s Bat Mitzvah. Teaching 5th grade Math & Science in the St. Charles School District keeps Heather absorbed and busy. She loves exposing her students to the many hands-on activities so much a part of teaching STEM subjects (Science Technology Engineering & Math). “The new technology is such fun”. Heather always knew she wanted to be a teacher. What surprises people most about Heather? How much she likes to read and how she must be in control of everything (not a surprise to her husband). And her students would be surprised to know how much time, outside of school, she spends at the baseball fields and hockey rink with her son in addition to time at the pool with her daughter. Sounds like Heather’s found a few extra hours in a day! Heather’s "perfect day" is an outdoor activity with her family; maybe a walk at the St. Louis Zoo with beautiful weather and no time limits.

Introducing…GARY MYERSGary has been a member of B'nai Amoona since 2003. Dr. Myers is a retired neurologist who, in recent months, found he has a talent for drawing; a fact that would likely surprise colleagues and friends. Dr. Myers grew up in Minneapolis, MN and relocated to St. Louis for work. Less than a year ago Dr. Myers’ dear wife Lynn passed away, the woman who “made me a better person” he declares. With the support of Rabbi Rose, the BA community and Art, Dr. Myers is traversing this bumpy, unfamiliar and painful road of surviving the loss of a much loved spouse, perhaps with a little more peace in his heart. Not always an active BA member, Dr. Myers now finds his participation on the increase. What began as a place to recite Kaddish has now blossomed into full-fledged Minyanaire friendships. Dr. Myers spent 30 days attending evening and now morning services and he describes his time spent with caring, warm BA congregants as “bringing me back to the living”. Morning services suit him best as the group regularly stays around for bagels, coffee and “shmoozing”. In addition to attending services on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Shabbat mornings, Dr. Myers enjoys time with

Rabbi Rose and the two men built a friendship. It was during these talks that Rabbi Rose asked Gary about honoring his wife at the synagogue and his enthusiastic response was, “of course” hence the Lynn Myer’s Memorial Mitzvah Day was born! The first annual event in Lynn Myers' name honored longtime member Jan Baron; the event was a tremendous success. When asked whose achievements will be recognized next year Gary replies that he does not know, or perhaps he’s sworn to secrecy. Gary’s 3 daughters currently reside on the East Coast. Seeking solace during this period of mourning, Gary signed up for a drawing class at the local community college. Experiencing pleasure when drawing Gary also discovered a natural talent and moved on to the 2nd level class. Other retirement activities include volunteering at the JFS food pantry each Friday morning as well as at the St. Louis University neurology clinic – Casa de Salud (House of Health). And to keep his calendar even busier, Gary began Spanish language classes in order to better communicate with patients at the clinic. Helping others is how Gary defines a perfect day.

The Meyer Kranzberg Learning CenterShalom,

I am so very excited and blessed to be joining the B’nai Amoona Kehillah this summer! I have always been taught to do what I love and love what I do…and I know that B’nai Amoona will truly be a wonderful place to continue my journey. Many of you have already welcomed me and proven you are a caring, compassionate, committed Jewish Community. As the Director of Innovative Learning and Engagement, I will have the opportunity to eventually meet and hear from each of you your stories.

My story includes being born and raised in St. Louis. For those who will of course ask, I graduated from Parkway West in 1990! My parents, Marsha and Ernie Demba are also St. Louisans and my brother Dan, and I were able to have both sets of grandparents in St. Louis as well. I did leave St. Louis; however, I have been back since 2003. My husband Mark and I are the Kvelling parents of Ellye and Micah.

I like to say I have always been a Jewish professional, and am excited to bring the experiences I have had during my last 25 years in the field to B’nai Amoona. My degrees are in Education and Social Work and my passions include creating inclusive communities where all feel welcomed and honored!

My initial days will be busy working with the Religious School program, however; I will also have the opportunity to work as part of the B’nai Amoona professional team and look forward to working with many other facets of the entire community including Adult Education and Congregational programming. I am committed to “engaging” with all of you very soon!

I can be reached at [email protected] and hope to begin meeting with each of you over the coming months. Until then, please feel free to reach out and connect.

Thank you for allowing me to join this vibrant and incredible Kehillah.

Sisterhood BAThe B’nai Amoona Sisterhood had a unique and creative year for: programming, Memorial Book, Education, Torah Fund, Sisterhood Shabbat, a Paid-Up Membership Brunch and even our Silent Mitzvah. With everything we did, we considered best practices of "Being a Mensch," whether it was bringing goodies to the Covenant House, sending support to our sisters whose congregation was impacted by the hurricane or supporting the good works of B’nai Amoona.

Hard decisions were also made when it came to the Sisterhood’s Judaica Shop. How do you move forward without losing the legacy that has been in place for many years? On June 15, we transitioned the Judaica Shop to B’nai Amoona. STAY TUNED for future announcements of The Shop's new prime location and rebranding!

Our Sisterhood team is the true meaning of Mensch and I look forward to what the

2018-2019 year will bring!

The Women’s League for Conservative Judaism (WLCJ) IntraContinental Region Spring Conference was held from April 28 to May 1 in St. Louis. It was very successful, with over 75 women in attendance. The committee worked for a year planning every last detail. We were delighted to have delegates from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Texas, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

A Spectrum of Possibilities was the theme. The quality of the programs and speakers were first rate while the spectrum of topics was current and broad. From Marci Mayer Eisen’s coaching workshop, Andrew Rehfeld’s discussion on Millennials, Cyndee Levy’s talk on the Mussar and leadership to Karen Aroesty’s discussion about anti- Israel, Anti-Semitism and Anti-Zionism and our own Rabbi Rose who led us in Torah study.

These and other thought-provoking and creative programs definitely inspired us. Among them were Chanala Rubenfeld, who demonstrated how to nourish our body and soul, and an empowerment session with Joy Millner. And, let’s not forget Lia Glynias’ Launch pop-up show with fun clothing from Israel.

In addition, our dinners at B’nai Amoona were beyond delicious thanks to Chef Jon. We’d also like to thank Rabbi Orrin Krublit for schmoozing and amusing us. And, thank you to the B’nai Amoona staff that helped our committee make this a success.

The committee is pictured below. Front (l-r): Marla Goldstein, Dani Hoffman, Amy Abramson, Debbi Braunstein and Sari Neudorf. Back (l-r): Lisa Samis, Rhonda Oberman, Elizabeth Wright, and Elise Krug

Sisterhood’s Fall Class: ATIDEYNU 201: Conversations in Search of a Meaningful Judaism

As we begin the reconstruction of our Synagogue’s physical plant, we also need to explore a series of conversations about the blueprint for our communities' future social, emotional and spiritual aspirations. We will start by listening to the voices of younger Jews, from a variety of Jewish communities, who will talk and reflect about “things to come”. These voices are found in a collection of essays edited by Rabbi Sidney Schwartz. The book is entitled Jewish Megatrends. As our conversations move along we will, no doubt, invite various Rabbis, teachers, artists and writers to join our explorations. The topics for discussion will be posted online and in our Bulletin. People are free to join us for a particular subject matter, or they can enjoy dialoguing with us throughout the entire series. We would love to have you join us! Watch for registration information coming soon. Contact Linda Spitzer-Gavatin at [email protected], with any questions.

Books for Sale!In preparation for our annual "Schmooze with our Rabbis" discussion on Yom Kippur afternoon, Rabbi Rose recommends the BA family read Jewish Megatrends: Charting the Course of the American Future by Rabbi Sidney Schwarz. The book can be purchased from Amy Maupin in the Rabbinic Suite for $15.99 (cash or check, only, please).

Other books available for purchase from Amy:
