Chairman’s Ramblings…Good Afternoon Everyone,A warm welcome to you all to the 57th Shelf Gala. Another year has gone by, a year ofstrange weather patterns – resulting in lots of trouble, upset and expense for manypeople in the Calder Valley and other areas of Yorkshire. Here in Shelf we faired a bitbetter. It would be a sad day for Calderdale if we were flooded. Queensbury would beOK but not many others. We also have not had much snow this year through the winterperiod and plants and trees were blooming at strange dates. At the time of writingthough (29th April) we had 4 inch of snow on our drive here in Shelf but hopefully theweather will have sorted itself out in time for Shelf Gala day.For the last few years we have been quite lucky having fine weather with plentysunshine and only odd bits of rain, however, this year we are a bit more prepared – ifwe have snow on gala day we have 8° BELOW HUSKY RESCUE giving ademonstration in the arena (see facing page). What about 2016, weather permitting we should have another great gala through theorganisation of my great committee who work tirelessly at providing an event whichShelf can be proud of. This year the procession starts again from Witt & Son car parkbecause of costs involved and procedures we have now to adhere to in regards to healthand safety and traffic management. Last year we started from Witt & Son car park butfailed to publicise the route and many people missed the procession thinking it wasgoing all through Shelf as in previous years. I must apologise to those people andhopefully we will do better this year. As I have mentioned before “One may ask is itworth having a procession”. I think it is as it gets the community involved and adds abit of colour to the main road in Shelf and gives us a day to be proud of. In the arena this year we have for your entertainment music on stage provided bySELAH SOUNDS (see page 41), we have The IMPERIAL CRUSADERS, a localmarching band, a Karate display by another local organisation SHOTOKAN KARATEand dance routines by MAGPIE MOVERS, DANCE STARS and STREET DANCEand as mentioned before 8° BELOW HUSKY RESCUE. We also have a “DOG WITHWAGGIEST TAIL” Competition. Outside the arena all the usual attractions: Tea Tent,Beer Tent, Fairground, Food outlets, Stalls, Football Competition, PaintingCompetition, Police display van and many stalls for you to look round – hopefullythere is something for everyone. As Chairman of the 2016 Shelf Gala Committee I would like to thank the sponsors ofthis Gala: Coral Windows, Interface, Blackshaw Holdings, Robinsons Farm Shop, Witt & Sons, Lightcliffe Volkswagen and National Breakdown. A big thank you to allthe advertisers in our programme who support us year after year. Please support thesepeople and use the services they offer. I would like to thank the gala committee –without these people the gala would not exist, to all the people who have helped us inany way to set up this gala and very important, clear it all away for another year andleave Shelf Hall Park as though no one had been there in the afternoon and finally to allyou people who come through the gates and support us year after year because withoutyou people there would be no use in having a gala. HAVE A GREAT DAY!TREVOR PRIESTLEY (Chairman, Shelf Gala Committee 2016)Crowning of the 2015 Gala Queen: Miss Kiera Hayes Photo: Andrew Walker

5 Cooperative Parade, Denholme Gate Road, Hipperholme, Halifax, West Yorkshire HX3 8LTRegulated by The Council for Licensed Conveyancers
Q. I’ve had an offer accepted to buy a property, what do I do now?
A. Now’s the time to instruct a Property
Lawyer or Solicitor. Call us for a free, no
obligation quote! We will guide you through
the process over the phone and with a
leaflet and we’ll keep you updated.
Q. How long does the process take from an offer being accepted to moving house?
A. If you are getting a mortgage, the average
time is 6 to 8 weeks.
Q. What is the advantage of using a Property Lawyer as a Licensed Conveyancer instead of a Solicitor?
A. A Solicitor practices in all areas of law.
A Property Lawyer and Conveyancer
specialise in property law.
Q. My neighbour believes my fence is on his land, can you help?
A. Yes, we can advise on the title and
who owns or is responsible for which
boundaries.
Q. I would like to save money and do my own conveyancing when I buy a house, can I do it myself?
A. Yes you can, however, a Conveyancer or
Solicitor would be required to act on
behalf of your mortgage lender. The
Conveyancer’s costs would probably
amount to the same as if you instructed
the Conveyancer to carry out all of the
work though.
Moving home?Think Valerie Holmes!Shelf resident Valerie Holmes is a Property Lawyer with an office
in Hipperholme next to the Coop. A Property Lawyer specialises
in Property and Land and is here to help you when you buy,
sell, transfer or lease a property, or have any concerns over
boundaries. We also deal with the legal aspect of re-mortgaging
too. Here Valerie answers some commonly raised questions.

Special notes regarding donations to Charities etc1. As from October 2008 It was decided by the committee that all
donations will be on a request basis. 2. A letter of request for donations MUST be received by Shelf Gala
Committee by 8th SEPTEMBER following the gala of that year.3. A written request must be sent every year if you wish to be considered.4. Shelf Gala Committee will then consider all written requests at their
September meeting. Any requests received after 8th September willnot be considered.
5. A written request does not guarantee a donation. It is the committee’sdecision who receives a donation.
6. The amount donated is again the committee’s decision depending onthe amount raised at that year’s gala.
7. All written requests to be sent to: Mrs Margeret Priestley, 10 Greenacres Drive, Shelf, Halifax HX3 7QSby 8th September of that year

Shelf and District Community GroupWhat are we doing for you?
Shelf Hall Park is set within a beautiful location but is locally acknowledgedas a faded glory so we are focusing on park improvements. We have...
• Facilitated the installation of an NHS funded ‘trim trail’ throughdiscussion with Calderdale Council
• With the help of volunteers, planted approximately 8,000 bulbs donatedby local businesses. The bulbs provide an increasingly spectacularshow of colour each year
• Worked with the Council to create a wild flower meadow which willeventually become a blaze of colour
• Built and gained sponsorship for bird nesting boxes and in partnershipwith the Countryside Service, attached them to trees in the park toencourage wildlife
• Worked for many months fundraising for improvements to the children’splayground which are expected to be implemented this summer
• Worked with Calderdale Council to introduce two picnic benches whichare also expected to be put in place this summer
• Arranged a bat walk in the park hosted by the Countryside Service

Our Out of School and Holiday Clubphilosophy is all about a child’s need toplay. Play is a biological, psychologicaland social necessity and is fundamental
to the healthy development and wellbeing of individuals and communities.
At Shelf Out of School Club play is aprocess that is freely chosen, personallydirected and intrinsically motivated. Thatis, our children determine and control the
content and intent of their play, byfollowing their own instincts, ideas andinterests, in their own way for their ownreasons. Children lead the planning at
Shelf Out of School Club and they tell uswhat fun activities they would like to do,
which makes for some fun times!
Our Childcare Practitioners prime focus isto support and facilitate the play process.
