Flexible Network ArchitectureThe PowerNet network can be built ina variety of configurations. Systemscan be built using existing Ethernetnetworks as the backbone as well ason a dedicated twisted shielded pair
running throughout a facility. Themost flexible, highest performancenetwork architecture includes a dedi-cated twisted shielded pair networkwithin the switchboard or equipmentroom connecting into a high speedEthernet backbone. For a layout of atypical facility network, please refer toEatons PowerNet network overviewon Pages 56-156 and 56-157.
Ethernet BackboneTCP/IP Ethernet networks havebecome the worldwide standard formoving information. Industry hasrecognized Ethernet as a high speed, flexible, low-cost network that is notvendor dependent. Multiple vendorsand users can share Ethernet back-bone networks. Eatons PowerNet net-work uses a standard TCP/IP Ethernetas the high speed backbone for carry-ing information to clients across theplant or across the world.
Eatons communication hardware offer-ings in the Ethernet world include suchproducts as the following:
Ethernet PONI: designed to get asingle device on the network andinto the PowerNet system.
WEBPONI: designed to provideaccess to a single device to anyonewith a Web browser on the sameEthernet LAN or WAN.

PowerNet Management Issues
PowerNet SystemManagement Issues
Eatons PowerNet Suite of client/server software products monitorscritical components in a power distri-
bution system. Metering devices, pro-tective relays, circuit breaker trip unitsand motor starters communicate vitalinformation to PowerNet clients forremote monitoring, alarming, trendingand control. The PowerNet systemprovides the capability to analyzepower quality, manage power costs, track and schedule maintenance, receive an early warning aboutpotential problems, troubleshoot andincrease productivity. The PowerNetsystem maintains backward compati-bility with existing IMPACC systemsand adds the capability to move dataover the high speed Ethernet network.
Analyzing Power QualityElectrical power quality is becomingever more important with the contin-uing increase of nonlinear loads inindustrial and commercial facilities.Voltage or frequency variances candisrupt many industrial processes, resulting in costly downtime andequipment losses. The PowerNetsystem provides historical profiles,or record of events for internal andutility verification, as well as real-timeinformation that allows the user toisolate the source, magnitude, timeand direction of power quality prob-lems, including the following:
Voltage DisturbancesThe most common power qualityproblem, voltage sags and swells, occurs because of utility supply varia-tions, system faults or the concurrentstarting of large motor loads.
HarmonicsHarmonic distortion appears on thedistribution system because of suchthings like variable frequency drivesand other non-sinusoidal loads whereac/dc conversion is present (UPS sys-
tems, computer power supplies, etc.).
Power FactorThe ability to monitor power factorsthroughout the facility ensures deliveryof power at optimal efficiency, allows100% usage of transformers and pre-vents costly power factor penalties.
Managing Power CostsPower management is essential foran industrial or commercial facility.Electricity costs account for between10 and 30% of total facility operatingcosts. Despite being often consideredoverhead, energy costs are manageable.
Manage When Energy is Used
Manage your energy costs by accu-rately measuring and quantifyingenergy patterns and usage withinthe facility.
Track Use Patterns
Efficiently schedule processes duringnon-peak usage times by being ableto identify where and when energy isbeing consumed. Verify the effective-ness of energy reduction methods.
Purchase Energy
Make informed energy purchasingdecisions by comparing how the ratestructures offered by various suppliersimpact your bottom line.
Allocate Energy Costs
Establish accountability and enableincentives for energy conservationby accurately allocating usage and
costs to each process or department.
Verify Bill
Confirm the accuracy of your energybill using the detailed data suppliedby PowerNet.
Track and Schedule MaintenanceCoordination problems can be iden-tified by overlaying coordinationcurves of active devices identifyingproblems before an unnecessary out-age occurs. Maintenance schedulescan be created on real-time mechani-cal and electrical equipment usageavoiding unnecessary preventive
maintenance. Equipment benefitingfrom usage-based maintenance canhave maintenance alarms initiatedbased on equipment lifetime dete-riorators rather than simply timeschedules.
Problem Avoidanceand TroubleshootingOperators receive alerts to potentialproblems before they occur, such asa breaker timing out to trip. Loadscan be shed or switched to alternatesources to prevent critical upstreambreakers from unnecessarily trippingon an overload condition.
Crucial electrical distribution informa-tion is instantaneously available toidentify which breaker has trippedalong with the cause and magnitudeof the problem. Event sequenceinformation narrows the list ofpossible causes to a trip. Immediateidentification of problems canshorten downtime from hours tominutes saving production losses.
Increased ProductivityIncreased productivity by eliminatingthe need for time consuming datacollection. Personnel are freed toperform actual maintenance functionsthat keep facilities operating.
Historical archive records and soft-ware tools provide simple-to-use toolsfor collecting energy data for internaland tenant energy billing withoutmanual meter reading or monthlybill calculating. Load profiles areimmediately available for analysiswhen considering expansion. Sparecapacity on existing feeders can beidentified through historical load pro-
filing avoiding trips due to seasonalpeaks. Correct determination of trans-former spare capacity can help avoidunnecessary substation purchases.Double-ended substations designedfor redundancy can have their abilityto carry loads through a single trans-formers outage verified.
