GoalsThe overall objectives are to present to the attendees timely knowledge pertaining to patient safety, medical knowledge, patient care and systems based practices (Drs. Ortiz, Streckenbach, Derschwitz and Chaimberg). Dr. Chaimberg will also be of great help in using appropriate interpersonal communication and fostering professionalism in the approach to the impaired practitioner, while Dr. Niklason will give the attendees a glimpse of the future of our ORs and a strong foundation of how we will get there by sharing her first-hand participation in such research.

ACCREDITATION

The Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists, Inc. (MSA) designates this live activity for a maximum of (7.5) AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. 8:10 am Pearls and Pitfalls of Induction of General Anesthesia in the Obese Parturient Vilma E. Ortiz, M.D. At the end of Dr. Ortiz’s lecture, participants will be able to describe the importance / impact of thorough airway evaluation, preoxygenation and optimal patient positioning during induction of general anesthesia in the high BMI parturient.

8:40 am Preoperative Stress Testing: Who Needs What? Kathleen Chaimberg M.D. M.A. At the end of Dr. Chaimberg’s lecture, participants will be able to describe how the

ACC/AHA guidelines have evolved to move away from preoperative stress testing in many patients, contrast the advantages and disadvantages of current commonly used preoperative stress test modalities and discuss the management implications of a positive preoperative stress test.

9:10 am Perioperative Management of ` Antiplatelet Agents Mark Dershwitz, MD, PhD At the end of Dr. Dershwitz’s lecture, the participant will be able to describe the mechanism of action and pharmacokinetics of clopidogrel and similar drugs and understand the benefits and risks of stopping clopidogrel and similar drugs prior to surgery.

10:20 am Perioperative Electrophysiology Scott Streckenbach, M.D. At the end of Dr. Streckenbach’s lecture, partici- pants will be able to describe the perioperative management of ICDs and Pacemakers.

10:50 am David M. Little, M.D. Memorial Lecture “And What Size Lung Would You Like?” Tissue Engineered Lungs for In Vivo Implantation Laura E. Niklason, MD, PhD As a result in participating in Dr. Niklason’s lecture, participants will be able to understand key elements of lung function that must be recapitulated in an engineered construct, understand the methods behind creation of acellular lung scaffolds, and understand bioreactor development and lung epithelial regeneration within acellular scaffolds.

9:00 am Le Forte Fracture: A New Marker for Addiction in Anesthesia Personnel? Kathleen Chaimberg, M.D., M.A. At the end of Dr. Chairmberg’s lecture, the participant will be able to describe what is known about the incidence of propofol misuse/abuse in anesthesia personnel, contrast the characteristics of health care workers who abuse propofol vs. those addicted to narcotics, and understand the limitations of restricted access as a means of decreasing pharmaceutical abuse.

9:30 am Dabigatran: That Was Easy Mark Dershwitz, MD, PhD At the end of Dr. Dershwitz’s lecture, the participant will be able to describe the mechanism of action and pharmacokinetics of dabigatran and indications for it’s use.

10:45 am Nonobstetric Surgery During Pregnancy: Anesthetic Concerns Vilma E. Ortiz, M.D. At the end of Dr. Ortiz’s lecture, the participant will be able to describe the key maternal physio- logic changes with pregnancy and impact of anesthetic on developing fetus in order to formu- late a safe anesthetic plan for the mother-to-be.
