A rated ‘U’ film stands for ‘Universal’ this certificate must be suitable for audiences ages four years and above to watch alone. This category is set out to try avoid any upset to young children, however it is impossible to predict what might upset a particular child. ‘U’ category only allows very mild bad language (e.g. ‘damn’ and ‘hell’). The only sexual behaviour seen in ‘U’ films is kissing and cuddling and only brief danger scenes. All negative behaviour must be balanced out with a positive outcome or moral.

Generally any age group can watch a PG rated film however it is up to the parent to decide whether it is suitable. PG involves mild language , moderate sexual
behaviour and moderate violence. Any child over the age of 8 should not be distressed by a PG rated film.
To watch at the cinema or buy/rent a 12 film the customer must be 12 or over however, if I child under the age of 12 went to see a 12A film in the cinema with an adult that would be allowed. The 12A certificate applies only to films, there is not of yet any 12A video games. Both 12 and 12A may contain strong language however it must be infrequent.
Nobody under the age of 15 is permitted buy/rent or watch any 15 rated films at the cinema, this rule also applies to 15 rated video games. Films and video games with this certificate may include..• strong violence• frequent strong language (eg 'fuck'). • portrayals of sexual activity• strong verbal references to sex• sexual nudity• brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence• discriminatory language or behaviour• drug taking
Nobody under the age of 18 is permitted to buy/rent any DVD or video game with this certificate this also applies for watching any 18 film at the cinema , ID is often required. 18 rated films can may contain.. • very strong violence• frequent strong language and/or very strong language • strong portrayals of sexual activity• scenes of sexual violence• strong horror• strong blood and gore• discriminatory language and behaviour
An 18 rated film could also contain depictions of real sex if it is justified by context.
