Design Services

India despite having full-fledged design houses like NSDRC(R & D institute), AB Marine(stability booklets and conversion of ship from ocean going vessel to inland vessels), etc. Cochin shipyard and Hindustan shipyard have taken the design from Mastek with the detail engineering.

Procurement and Decision-making

The owner selects the main equipment like main engine, auxiliary engine, etc. Some times the shipyard suggests the make and type, and the ship-owner approves it. Public sector yards Required to go through elaborate and clearly defined tendering processes for each vessel Difficult to standardize since each time, a different supplier may secure

the order Cannot establish long-term relations and obtain attractive discount and

credit terms with a group of suppliers because of the tendering processThe decision-making is often slow and payments could be delayed.

Private sector yards Quick decisions are taken based on price, credit terms and project delivery schedules Standardization is possible Efficient Supply Chain Management is possible

Enrollment to approved list of equipment suppliers

The equipments that are fitted on the ship have to be approved by the classification society, which is Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) in India.

If the equipment manufacturer is not in the approved list of manufacturers of IRS, then every time the equipment is fitted on the ship, the yard/manufacturer has to take approval from the IRS. Hence it is wise in manufacturers part that they get themselves listed in IRS approved list.
