This & That (Fr. S. Katziner)
“I Invite All to a Renewed Personal Encounter with Jesus Christ”
I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed persona encounter with Jesus
Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since “no one is excluded
from the joy brought by the Lord” (Saint Paul VI). The Lord does not disappoint those who take this risk; whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we come to realize that he is already there, waiting for us with open arms. Now is the time to say to Jesus: “Lord,
here I am once more to renew my covenant with you. I need you. Save me once again, Lord, take me once
more into your redeeming embrace.” No one can strip us of the dignity bestowed upon us by God's boundless and unfailing love. With a tender-ness which never disappoints, but is always capable of restoring our joy, he makes it possible for us to lift up
our heads and start anew. Let us now flee from the Resurrection of Jesus, let us never give up, come what
will. May nothing inspire more than his life; which impels us onward!
Pope Francis Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium,
Paragraph 2-3, p. 61. www.vatican.va.
October is the Month of the Holy Rosary After the 12:00 noon Mass, during the month of
October, the rosary will be prayed in church. Please join us in honoring our Blessed Mother. If you cannot be in
church, please pray the rosary wherever you are. Our Lady showers us with many blessings. Please take
the time to thank her.
St. Ephrem’s Charismatic Prayer Group meets every Monday at 12:00 noon. Please join us for praise, bible
reflection, intercessory prayer and more. Everyone is welcome.
The IHM Sisters wish to say a hhuge thank you to our St. Ephrem Parish Family. Your generosity in
the recent Camilla Hall Chance Drive was overwhelming.
The total collection, including St. Ephrem school and parish was $3,101.00. These chances are a major fundraiser for our retirement home and
care facility for our sick and elderly IHM Sisters. A list of winners is posted on the
vestibule bulletin board. God bless you for your kindness to us here at St. Ephrem’s. You are all remembered in our
daily prayers.

This & That (Fr. S. Katziner)
August 2019 Pew Survey: 69% of Catholics Don’t Believe in the Real Presence
Regarding the above statistic, I thought it might be helpful to share what the Universal Catechism of the
Catholic Church says regarding the Eucharist.
#1373 “Christ is Present in Many Ways” “Christ Jesus is present in many ways to his Church. In his word, in his Church’s prayer, “where two or three are gathered in my name”, in the poor, the sick, and the imprisoned, in the sacraments of which he is the author, in the sacrifice of the Mass, and in the person of the minister. But “he is present...most especially in the
Eucharistic species.”
#1374 “The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist” The mode of Christ’s presence under the Eucharistic species is unique. It raises the Eucharist above all the sacraments as “the perfection of the spiritual life and the end to which all the sacraments tend.” In the most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist “the body and blood together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained.” “This presence is called ‘real’- by which is not intended to exclude the other types of presence as if they could not be ‘real’ too, but
because it is presence in the fullest sense: that is to say, it is a substantial presence by which Christ, God and man, makes himself wholly and entirely present.”
#1376 & 1377 “The Change of Bread and Wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is called Transubstantiation”
The Council of Trent summarizes the Catholic faith by declaring: “Because Christ our Redeemer said that it was truly his body that he was offering under the species of bread, it has always been the conviction of the Church of God, and this holy Council now declares again, that by the consecration of the bread and wine
there takes place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the Body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood. This change the holy Catholic Church
has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation.”
The Eucharistic presence of Christ begins at the moment of the consecration and endures as long as the Eucharistic species subsist. Christ is present whole and entire in each of the species and entire in each of their
parts, in such a way that the breaking of the bread does not divide Christ.
#1336 “Will You Also Go Away?” The first announcement of the Eucharist divided the disciples, just as the announcement of the Passion
scandalized them: “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” The Eucharist and the Cross are stumbling blocks. It is the same mystery and it never ceases to be an occasion of division. “Will you also go away?”:
the Lord’s question echoes through the ages, as a loving invitation to discover that only he has “the words of eternal life” and that to receive in faith the gift of his Eucharist is to receive the Lord himself.
