Christmas is when we think of others. A time for family, feasts, and presents and when expectations are rarely fully realized. In the midst of all our rushing to complete our lists of “have-to’s and should-do’s,” I hope you find a moment of peace. A moment to enter into the stable and to recall God does not want to judge us or focus on our struggles, as He knows the stresses of life. Christmas reminds us He entered into a stable, a place meant to house animals, not a palace fit for a king.

Throughout his life, He too felt pressed on every side and also knew the world many of us experience. “My God, why have you abandoned me?” Reminds us that he knows the alienation shared by many recently divorced or the fear some face who live in a world filled with violence. He knows what it is to have tried to stretch the five loaves and two fish, of our lives, to meet the demands around us, only to fall again and wonder if we have the strength to rise again.

The only difference is He had a choice. He chose to enter into our world to prove that love could conquer all. He entered the world knowing it is not as it should be. He loved us and wanted to show us just how much. May we know, both now and forever, the peace He has come to share with us. From Catholic Social Service and all those we serve, Merry Christmas and thank you for your support.

The Reason to Stay

~ Mary Black Bonnet (CSS Client)Staying alive has never been hard for me, despite being surrounded by dragons. I knew in time I’d see between their head(s), under their legs, around them... the distance and dreams of life beyond The horizon and future bound me here

The hope for small hands and tender hearts. I could never leave early there were too many things to come.

Too much to see! Too much to do! Too many people yet to meet!

Every day proves some kind of gift, however small.

Sometimes it’s as simple as greeting the morning light.

I treasure that light.

The John T. Vucurevich Foundation is a private foundation described in Sections 501(c)(3) and 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. Founder John T. Vucurevich was born in Yugoslavia in 1912 and at the age of eight immigrated to the United States, growing up in Lead, South Dakota. Over the years, John learned the value of hard work, telling the truth, the need for keeping sound spiritual values, and the importance of helping those persons less fortunate.

John was a successful banker for over 50 years, owning banks in Nebraska, North Dakota, Minnesota, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa and ·Wisconsin. He developed a reputation as an expert in the development of publicly traded bank holding companies and served on a number of gubernatorial advisory committees.

He also felt that community service was very important and served in both the South Dakota House of Representatives and Senate. He was an active supporter of higher education and was recognized by the University of South Dakota School of Business as the South Dakotan of the Year. Because of his support of higher education, John established several scholarship endowments throughout the state of South Dakota. He demonstrated a deep-seated concern for the future leadership of the United States and was interested in promoting young men and women as future leaders.

Rapid City and the Black Hills area were very important to him, and he remained active in the community throughout his life. His success allowed him to establish endowments for many organizations in the Rapid City community to help those less fortunate, as well as provide financial support throughout the area to many individuals and organizations.

John Vucurevich’s support and caring were genuine and often provided anonymously. Because of his successful ventures in the banking ·world, and tremendous support in community affairs, it enabled him to establish the John T. Vucurevich Foundation, in his name, “to make a piece of the world a brighter place.”

Catholic Social Services Reaches Out to Impacted Families in Western South Dakota

Jim Kinyon, CSS Executive Director has been hearing from pastors, families and local businesses seeking support for families impacted by the economic down turn in commodity prices. According to Kinyon, “Families are stressed and we encourage families needing a listening ear or a place to talk to contact our office.” The Diocese Disaster Committee agreed to provide for the cost of counseling services for producers. Kinyon also encourages families in need or those with ideas of what can be done to help, to please contact him. We encourage people of all faiths to pray for those experiencing difficult times. The Disaster Committee also approved funding so that Catholic Social Services professional counselors can reach out to impacted families by offering a listening ear to them, at no cost. According to Kinyon, “these services can be accessed either through offices or via telehealth. To access telehealth call CSS’s office at 605- 348-6086.” CSS’s only full time office is in Rapid City but services are also available through our satellite offices in Eagle Butte, Spearfish, Pine Ridge, or Porcupine.

CSS BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND STAFF ATTEND ETHICS RETREAT

CSS Currently Assisting Custer and Burke with Disaster Relief Funds

Lisa Wesolick, CSS President, welcomes the Board and Staff to the Ethics Retreat last September at Terra Sancta Retreat Center. The day long Retreat included presentations, breakout sessions and general discussions about operational ethics.

The CSS Board and Staff attended a day long retreat on adopting a Code of Ethics for Catholic Social Services, which was presented by Catholic Charities USA – Washington DC. A key aspect of providing quality care for the many clients of Catholic Social Services in Rapid City is grounding these services in ethical behavior of the CSS Board, Staff and volunteers. CSS will be reviewing the proposed Code of Ethics as provided by Catholic Charities USA for formal action at the future Board of Directors meeting. Most of the Code of Ethics values are already a part of CSS current operating policies.

Shortly before she graduated from college this spring, Anna Haydock got the chance to paint an inspirational sign as a gift for her 2-year-old daughter.

Its message reads: Beautiful Girl, You were made to do HARD things, so BELIEVE in yourself

“I made it specifically for Jade, but it was a beautiful reminder to myself, as well,” said Anna. As a single mom, who earned a degree in

metallurgical engineering from South Dakota School of Mines & Technology while enrolled in the Uplifting Parents Program at Catholic Social Services, she knows about doing hard things.

Two years ago, Anna was mid-way through her degree at Mines when she found herself dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. “I was scared. I wasn’t prepared at all,” she said. With her parents and friends all living in California, Anna lacked a support network in Rapid City to help her care for a baby while attending college. Facing an uncertain future, the new, young single mom left school for a semester and began working at a local fast food restaurant because she didn’t have the money and resources she needed to finish college.

During her pregnancy, Anna was enrolled in the Bright Start Program, a home-visit nursing program designed to help first-time expectant moms give their babies a healthy start in life. From there, she was referred to the Uplifting Parents (UP) Program at CSS, where she found the help she needed to go back to school.

“Uplifting Parents played a huge role in my life,” Anna

said. “That program was essential in me completing college.”

Today, Anna is earning a great salary as an associate engineer for Savannah River Remediation, working on environmental remediation issues surrounding nuclear waste sites. She and Jade are settling into a new life in Aiken, S.C., and can look forward to a bright future and financial security, thanks to her college degree in a high-demand career field.

“This job opportunity was the best, salary-wise, and my work schedule is a 4-day work week, which gives me the work/life balance that I want as a single parent,” Anna said. “I love it. It’s a beautiful area. I’m in a very happy spot.”

As Jade’s new sign attests, Anna studied hard to earn an engineering degree. But it was the Uplifting Parents Program that provided the mentoring, case management and connection to community resources that made it all possible.

Uplifting Parents is a CSS-led program that assists low-income single parents to escape poverty through education, said UP Director Becky Cornell-Marsich. Begun in 2014, UP offers intensive mentoring, wrap-around case management services for both parents and children, and a small monthly stipend to about 40

single parents each year who are within 2 years of completing a college education.

“The financial stipend was a big part of it, allowing me to return to school without having to work fulltime. But the case management aspects of the program was a huge part of it,” Anna said of her success.

UP empowers single parents to find employment, earn a living wage and support their families, Cornell-Marsich said. “The best part about working in the UP program is walking alongside single parents as they do what sometimes feels impossible. These parents are setting an example to their kids that hard work and never giving up will always pay off in the end,” she said. When a parent graduates from college and their children see it, they are eight times more likely to attend college themselves than if their parents don’t have a college degree, research shows.

Anna’s UP mentor, Hannah Ceremuga, directed her to community resources that were available to UP participants through the 31 partner agencies that are part of the UP Coalition. Those partners range from childcare providers to government agencies to church-affiliated charities. But first, Ceremuga and Anna forged a more immediate connection, when Hannah served as emotional support during labor and delivery when Jade was born.

Mentoring is at the heart of all UP’s services and many of the program’s participants credit the personal relationship they develop with their mentor, and the cheerleaders they become for them, with getting them through school. “Hannah was super-invested. She felt like my big sister. She was there basically from the very beginning, to when I left,” Anna said. “If I needed a resource, she would help me find it. The mentors were really invested in what they were doing and it wasn’t just a job to them.”

UP connected Anna and Jade to the Jump Start Daycare Program, which provides free childcare to high school-age mothers but also serves college students, if and when they have additional openings. “I would not ever have known that was a resource in Rapid City if not for UP,” she said. Jade spent the first two years of her life at Jump Start and Anna appreciates UP’s two-generation approach to services.

“We both benefitted, but thanks to the services that Jade received through the UP program, she is really excelling. And that’s a direct result of the resources that she got in very early childhood.”

“Jade was born into my hard times, but she also was able to see me come through them and get past them. So, I have to live the example I want to set for her,” Anna said.

As a young woman of color, Anna knows that her daughter, too, will face challenges in life. “Jade is going to be exposed to many different things in life. And people will see certain things about her (race, gender, hair texture) before they see her as an individual and person.”

So the “Beautiful Girl” sign serves as a reminder to Anna to teach her daughter resilience and how to meet her own challenges in life.

That’s a lesson the Uplifting Parents program taught her while she and other mothers took on the daunting task of attending college while being the sole caregivers of young children.

“She’s going to go through hard times and experiences. It’s my job to not only protect her, but give her the tools to believe she’s capable of anything and everything. All I want is for Jade to be happy, and know she can be anything she wants to, no matter what society and statistics say.”

Dani, a single mom of four kids, graduated from Western Dakota Tech in May with an associate degree in surgical technology. She began her new career at Black Hills Surgical Hospital in June. The mentoring support she found at UP, and the small monthly fi nancial stipend it provided, empowered her to succeed in college while being a single mom.

Uplifting Parents (UP) is for low-income single parents who are pursuing a college degree so they can earn a living wage

in a career fi eld that allows them to support their families.

Participants get a small monthly stipend, intensive mentoring, 2-generation case management services for

themselves and their children, and help accessing all available community resources that their families need while they’re in school through the 31 partner agencies in the UP Coalition.

Since it began in 2014, UP has helped 75 single parents and their 130 young children on a journey out of poverty and

toward prosperity through education. UP is currently being evaluated by the University of Notre Dame as an evidence-

based program for its potential to be replicated in other cities across the United States.

The Uplifting Parents program is moving the needle on poverty, one family at a time, here in Rapid City.

Dani was named the 2019 Technical Student of the Year by the American Technical Education Association.
