HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 58TH UOL CONVENTION(July 27-31, 2005) The Holiday Inn, Bethlehem, PA was the site of the 58th

Annual Convention of the Ukrainian Orthodox League of the USA. It was hosted by the Sr. and Jr. UOL Chapters of Assumption of the Virgin Mary Parish, Northampton, PA.

Convention Co-Chairs, Martha Misko and Linda Winters, with Fr. Bazyl Zawuricha, and a dynamic convention committee welcomed delegates and guests as they arrived on Wednesday, July 27th.

The Senior and Junior National Offi cers commenced convention activities with their respective meetings at 4:00 PM, followed by a Vesper Service by Metropolitan Constantine (Pittsburgh, PA), Fr. Zawierucha (Northampton, PA), Fr. Nakonachny (Parma, OH), Fr. Oryhon (Allentown, PA), and Fr. Dn. Paisius McGrath (Charlottesville, VA).

The Senior and Junior National Executive Boards, with Spiritual Advisors, Fr. Nakonachny (Sr. Board) and Fr. Oryhon (Jr. Board), gathered for dinner immediately following Vespers in an effort to “get to know each other better”. They had worked together very effectively during the past year and this was a culmination of those efforts. Metropolitan Constantine, Archbishop Antony, Archbishop Vsevolod, Fr. Zawierucha, and P.M. Mary Ann Nakonachny also attended the dinner.

Following the presentation of colors by Northampton juniors, the singing of the USA National Anthem, Melanie Nakonachny, Sr. National UOL Presi-dent opened the convention with recognition and welcome of Hierarchs and clergy that included: Hieromonk Daniel (NJ), Fr. Peter Hotrovich (NJ), Fr. Charles Baxter (OH), Fr. John Nakonachny (OH), Fr. Zinoviy Zharsky, (NY), Fr. Bazyl Zawierucha (PA), Fr. Steve Repa (PA), Fr. Myron Oryhon (PA), Fr. Jakiw Norton (NJ), Deacon Paisius McGrath (VA), Sub Deacon Kurtis Lauser (PA), and Fr. Ugolnik (PA). She offered commendations to the current National Executive Board for their outstanding performance during the past year and challenged the convention to “do good and prepare for the future”.

Katya Carman, Jr. National President offered greetings on behalf of the Jr. League and included comments about the 44th Annual Jr. UOL Convention. She reiterated that the Jr. UOL National Executive Board “was fantastic and did incredible work, with the help of local chapters. It was a goal to establish a closer working relationship with the senior board—that has been a success.

THE U.O.L. CONVENTION – A FAMILY REUNIONWhy is the UOL Important?

Every year after returning from the Convention, I think about writing an article dedicated to the question “why do we need a National UOL anyway?” Coming home from the Northampton Convention, with the UOL Bulletin dead-line one day after the Convention, was the type of impetus I needed to fi nally put it down on paper. So here it is, one person’s answer to the question “why is the UOL important?”

Somehow, everyone acknowledges that the Junior UOL has a major function, that it is needed. But the question is frequently asked: “why do we need a Se-nior UOL chapter when we have the Church Committee, Sisterhood, and other organizations within the church. The UOL is just another organization similar to those already existing in our local parish.”

I am always inspired by individuals who attend the Convention for the fi rst time. They, like the Juniors, always clearly recognize that the main purpose is to have a community larger than one’s own parish. To have a family that is more than the nuclear family or parish community. To gain enthusiasm, empathy and love from those who live far away, but are experiencing the same daily struggles we face in our life as Orthodox Christians. Somehow, after attending many Conven-tions, we lose sight of that vision and fail to recognize the beauty of the UOL.

A Family Reunion of Our UOL Family . . .At the Convention we discuss projects and set goals for the year, but I would

argue that the projects and accomplishments are nothing in comparison to this community, our UOL family. In many ways, the Convention is a Family Reunion, where we see extended family. Just like a family, sometimes we get angry or annoyed, judgmental or fi nicky – but we love each other just the same. In fact, it wouldn’t be the same if it weren’t for the great myriad of personalities that create the tapestry of our UOL community.

As Junior Advisor, I have the wonderful joy of seeing the children of my peers and the grandchildren of the UOL founders coming to the sessions. If you believe that the Convention doesn’t accomplish anything, come and see the Juniors, strong after fi fty years. Without a Senior UOL to show that the family is strong, why would the Junior UOL be needed? The Juniors are preparing to become the leaders in the Church and it is our obligation to keep the Senior UOL strong for them. For them to come to the Convention in 5, 10, 20 and more years to remember the great times they had, and to live great moments that will become the stories of the future.

As a family reunion, the Convention rekindles the fl ames that have been fl ick-ering or even close to extinguishing within each of us. Each individual comes back warmed by the joys of the Convention, armed with memories of touching moments, inspirational liturgies and prayer services, incredibly funny experi-ences (karaoke can certainly bring a crowd to tears from laughter) and heartfelt one-on-one talks with each other. I believe that these moments are in fact far more important than the business decisions and the huge accomplishments of the UOL. The community, the sense of belonging to the family of Ukrainian Orthodox Christians is our purpose. When we have fi rst time delegates they feel that sense of belonging. In the quest for accomplishments, we don’t always take the time to step back and appreciate the beauty of the family that we have. Certainly, there are times when a family gets annoyed with each other, but that is the beauty of being a member of the family – that we know each other – that we love each other – just as we are.

During this Convention I was touched by Mother Raphael’s closing remarks, and would like to summarize a short story she shared with the UOL Convention body.

I am privileged to greet you as the newly-reelected president of the Ukrainian Orthodox League. I would like to begin by thanking everyone who attended the 58th Annual Ukrainian Orthodox League Convention and participated in the business ses-sions and social events. I am very excited to serve the U.O.L. in this capacity and feel blessed to once again be working with such an outstanding Executive Board.

I would be remiss if I did not thank the Senior and Junior U.O.L. Chapters of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Parish in Northampton, PA for hosting the 58th Annual U.O.L. Convention. From the Blast to the Past dance to the entertaining American Ukrainian Idol Karaokee Kafe, and the Divine Services, everyone had an enjoyable time reacquainting themselves with old friends and making new ones. I know that the membership left with increased enthusiasm for the U.O.L. and our Holy Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Thank you Northampton for sponsoring such a wonderful event. I am sure that U.O.L. members from across the country will be talking about the 58th Annual Ukrainian Orthodox League Convention for quite some time.

The fall meeting of both the Junior and Senior National Executive Boards will be held in South Bound Brook, NJ on September 16-18, 2005. I encourage any of you who are in the area to attend this meeting.

They have already begun working hard to lay the groundwork for an outstanding year. I am eager to continue to work together with the Junior U.O.L. SUMMER ’05 IN CARNEGIE, PAby Natasha Walewski, Jr. Chapter Reporter

It has been a busy summer for Sts. Peter and Paul Jr. UOL Chapter in Carnegie, PA. We started out the summer with elections. Our new board is as follows: President - Anastasia Markiw,Vice President – Corinna Rozum, Treasurer – Zachary Kapeluck, Recording Secy. – Christine Wachnowsky, Corresponding Secy. – John Walewski, Re-porter – Natasha Walewski.

Many of our Jr’s also attended religious summer activities. Five of our Jr’s at-tended Diocesan Church School Camp and seven attended the Teenage Conference. Both encampments were at All Saints Camp in Emlenton, PA. During the Teenage Conference, eight children from our church school also participated in Vacation Bible School at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Carnegie, along with kids from South Side and other parishes in the Pittsburgh region.

After camp, fi ve Jr’s attended the UOL Convention. These Jr. UOL members included Natasha Walewski, John Walewski, Zachary Kapeluck, Julie Galla, and Natalie Rozum, and participated in the sessions, evening activities and all religious services. We also had two members helping at Mommy & Me Daddy & Me, also held at ASC (All Saints Camp).

As the 2005 summer comes to an end, we, as a chapter, have much to look forward to. During September 8th, 9th and 10th, we will be helping with Carnegie Days along with the rest of our parish. It is a community event where our parish and UOL chapters will have a food booth, serving pyrohy, haluski, halubshi, wings and fried vegetables—from noon to midnight for three days. Our junior members will help in the booth, transport food from our church kitchen to the booth on the Carnegie Mall, and help with clean-up. We will also participate in coffee hour, church school and any upcoming events in our parish.

We hope to see you all in Carnegie SOON!!!

The Metro J. Baran award was instituted to honor the memory of Metro (Jimmy) Baran for his many years of dedicated service and untiring efforts in working with the Juniors and the Ukrainian Orthodox League. The purpose of this award is to recognize, with honor, a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox League who works tirelessly with the youth of the Church on a local, regional and national level in their preparation as future church leaders. This award is presented only when the National Executive Board believes it has received the nomination of a worthy individual.

This year’s Metro J. Baran Achievement Award is presented to a candidate who truly embodies the purpose of this award, Mrs. Diane Senedak of Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Youngstown, Ohio.

On the local level, Diane has served as the Junior UOL Chapter Advisor working diligently to implement new youth programming in their parish. Regionally, she has promoted programs among the youth of the region which include tobogganing trips, Regional Youth Choir rehearsals and an Annual Jr. UOL and Young Adult Lock-in which is attended by upwards of fi fty partici-pants from the region each winter. Nationally, the recipient has truly given of herself. Diane has served as a counselor at Teenage Conference for the past three years. This year she also accepted the added responsibility of chairing the 1st UOL All Saints Camp Lenten Retreat.

Fr. Charles Baxter, Diane’s spiritual advisor said that “she has been a tire-less and industrious catalyst for the Junior U.O.L. Chapter. She is a voice of reason and compassion.”

Junior UOL members wrote, that “Mrs. Sendak goes above and beyond the call of duty to accommodate all of the youth of the Orthodox church. We have never heard her say “no” about jumping into the van with seven Junior U.O.L. members to drive any distance to go to any church event.”

Diane’s chapter president added that she “quietly leads by example and helped our Juniors develop their motto Give of oneself in small ways. “Every activity has a theme so that along with the fellowship the Juniors are learn-ing and active in their Faith.”

In addition to raising her three sons, she has touched the lives of the youth of her parish and the diocese.

As the newly re-elected Jr. UOL President, I am thrilled to be leading the Jr. UOL through another fabulous year. I would like to thank the delegates and guests of the 44th Jr. UOL Convention for their hard work throughout the convention and for proving to be very mature and respectable young adults who are devoted to their church and league! I would also like to thank this past year’s conven-tion body for re-electing me as the President to lead the Jr. League through this coming year.

I would like to extend our gratitude to the Sr. and Jr. UOL Chapters and the entire parish of Northampton for hosting a wonderful and well planned 44th Jr. UOL Convention. The “Blast from the Past” was truly a treat to fl ashback and dress up like our parents did, and dance to their favorite hits from the past. The following night, as we sang karaoke in hopes to win the best vocalist awards, and we all enjoyed the “Ukrainian American Idol” per-formances which weren’t always in tune, but were extremely entertaining to watch. Although Saturday’s Banquet and Ball were much anticipated, the Juniors were fi rst able to hang out poolside in the afternoon and to unwind from the exhausting, yet productive sessions. Thank you once again to this parish and especially the chairwomen and junior chair people for hosting this fabulous weekend.

As many of you are aware, each Junior National Executive Board member is required to commit themselves to chair a committee for the year. I would like to remind the juniors who were able to be delegates at convention, to share the experience they had at the convention with friends from their chapter and parish at home and other friends who may not have a chapter. Those chapters not able to be represented at the convention will soon be re-ceiving a copy of the Convention minutes and committee reports. The ideas brainstormed in committees are the goals of the League for the coming year. Last year, the Junior and Senior UOL National Executive Boards worked diligently together to link the Junior and Seniors closer. We hope to continue to work well together again this coming year. Our fi rst Junior National Executive Board meeting will be held jointly with the Senior National Executive Board the weekend of September 16-18, 2005 in South Bound Brook, NJ. ARCHBISHOP ANTONY USED A STORY TO BEGIN HIS ADDRESS: “A young lady’s mother placed three pots of water on the stove to boil. In one pot she placed carrots, in another she placed eggs and in the third, she placed fresh coffee beans. After a while the mother fi shed out the carrots, the eggs, and poured a cup of coffee and asked the daughter what she saw. The carrots were soft, the eggs were hard on the outside but soft on the inside—like human personalities, but the coffee had changed the water. ‘Which are you daughter, she asked?’ The mother continued, ‘If you are like the coffee beans, you change yourself and the water around you.’

“Our League has known adversity--we have faced that adversity. We have overcome it, and we have always served the church. Without the League there would be no camp, there would be no Seminary, there would not be many of the publications. The League has been there when needed. We are not a mutual admiration society. However, we have faced much adversity, and we are going to be facing even more adversity in the not too distant years. The League must be able and willing to stand up to that adversity--to fi ght the battle in order to save not only our branch of Christianity, but Christianity as a whole.

“We must leave the convention with the understanding that we are faced with the adversity. We must look for places to develop new missions, and when parishes are closing we must search out our people who have drifted away. Look for, and be willing to reach out to those who have left, and draw them back with ‘LOVE’. Your love and the joy that you show when you walk out of church will attract them.

“We must rethink and live the league’s motto: Dedicated to our church and Devoted to its Youth, and we must be dedicated to bring-ing the world in.”

Mother Rafaella

The KEYNOTE ADDRESS was given by Mother Rafaella of the Holy Myrrhbearers Monastery.

“I was a fl aming atheist until a senior in high school. I told the teacher she had no right to force religion down my throat. . . . My friend said that I was afraid to read the bible. One of the problems as Christians is that we are raised with a Sunday School version of our religion.

“The bible is hard to read in some ways. I had a niece who lived with us while fi nishing high school. She had a problem with chemistry, so I instructed her to read it, read it, and read it again. Then see if it makes sense. So, do the same with the bible, even though it is a little racy, with the nakedness of Adam and Eve. Read the bible in a similar fashion, if you don’t understand it, read it again, and read it again.

“It is important to know that the Lord is working within each of us. With me in my early life, I was the center of the universe and I didn’t have room for God. That is true with most of us. We don’t need to have I LIKE CHRIST on our t-shirts. It is just what we do. When some one meets you, they should be meeting the Lord. Putting on Christ does not make us small, but falling into the hands of Christ is scary, because we don’t know what is going to be asked of us.

“Do you have a “prayer rule” in your home? Could you go throughout a day without saying ‘hello’ to someone who lives in your own home? Then, how can you have a relationship with the Lord without saying ‘hello’ daily? Upon awakening, say: ‘Hello Lord’. Even when you are very busy--do it--even if you must go to the bathroom--do it. Religion is what we use to tie ourselves to God. It’s a means to an end and not an end unto itself”.

ARCHBISHOP VSEVOLOD addressed the convention by saying, “After listening to the inspiration of Metropolitan Constantine, Archbishop Antony, and the spiritually fi lled keynote by Mother Raphaella, I was debating on what I should speak of. I decided I will talk about prayer, something you will take home.

“We have two minds about prayer. When we are in a diffi cult time . . . it comes easy, almost our only alternative. In other circumstances prayer is a mystery, almost an obstacle in our lives. We think that so many prayers go unanswered. We are often overwhelmed with doubt.

“Prayer meets our deepest spiritual and emotional need. But in the speed of life, we have information overload. It is easy for the Lord to fall out of our souls. When we have less time to devote to the Lord, He falls out of our lives. Then the face of the Lord falls further and further away. Prayer has the mysterious power to bring us closer to Christ. We need prayers in our lives,

Enjoy the fellowship during the convention, and please extend a welcome to those who you do not know.”

Fr. Bazyl Zawierucha challenged delegates and guests to have a plan. “I saw the cohesion within my parish as preparations were made for the con-vention--around the UOL Chapter. Have a plan, do something during the convention. Come out of this convention with ideas as to where our Church is heading.”

Martha Misko and Linda Winters, Senior Co-Chairs and Matthew Winters and Anastasia Zawierucha, Junior Convention Co-Chairs gave warm welcomes and offered assistance that any delegate or guest might need.

METROPOLITAN CONSTANTINE ADDRESS: “God is good to us, he brings us back together once again, to look into each others eyes, to chal-lenge each of us here within the strongest organization of the church—the UOL. Baptized with, robed with, and dressed with Christ; we live in a society where Christians are not hot or cold, but luke warm. And that is a tragedy. We have members who are selective, in putting on and taking off of Christ. Many members have a mentality of hatch them, match them and dispatch them. This is a disaster within the church. That world out there wants to know, is there any good coming from the church? Where are those who have truly robed themselves with Christ. Where can we say “alleluia” -- he is of Christ -- dressing oneself of Christ?

“What are we leaving our juniors? There is much hopelessness, much lovelessness out there. And we are the community of love—the League is so warm so loving, in spite of those who criticize it.

“Some of our chapters are weakening. We must work to help them -- because we are loving we must extend a helping hand. We must work hard, not only in our own communities, but in reaching out to others.

“I greet you on this 58th Convention and wish you all of God’s blessing in your deliberations, and I hope that your decisions will have great vision for our youth and the future. I wish you a most successful convention.”

WEDNESDAY, HOSPITALITY NIGHT brought together the young and the not so young to reminisce about past conventions, past accomplishments and news about each others families. Fellowship and fun were supported by refreshments and cold beverages—of course!

THURSDAY began with the Divine Liturgy served by Metropolitan Con-stantine who was assisted by Fr. Zawierucha, Fr. Oryhon, Fr. Nakonachny, Deacon Sawrynski (Northampton, PA). Convention delegates and guests participated in the Liturgy and Holy Communion. The traditional Thursday Brunch at the hotel was a hit with everyone.

“We have had three homes at St. Nicholas: fi rst, the Holiday Inn for one year, then the basement of a local Baptist Church, and in 2000 we moved to rented space that was a warehouse. We currently have an average of 50-60 people at Sunday Liturgy. Thus, we are very eager to move into a new and permanent space.

“We are being blessed by our Lord and one of our missions is to provide a place for individuals of other ethnic persuasions and to provide for those who are seeking Orthodoxy. We continue to grow by bringing into our midst those who are searching for the truth. We are looking for property and a building to permanently establish our church at the price of $400,000, and are in negotia-tions with the current owners. We have reached 95% of that amount.

Fr. John Nakonachny, Sr. UOL Spiritual Advisor, said he “is constantly impressed with members who consistently come to the UOL convention given the costs and time involved”. That obviously demonstrates love for this orga-nization, and for that he expressed his commendation. He said, “the highlight for me was to stand behind the altar and to watch you come to the chalice, which demonstrates your deep devotion to the Orthodox Faith.”

Community Center was truly “down memory lane” (as one junior remarked) for many of the UOL oldsters. In true Northampton style, the family style dinner provided the nourishment to sustain delegates and guests throughout a hectic convention schedule that was superbly planned by the Convention Committee.

FRIDAY: The “Ukrainian-American Idol Karaoke Kafe” held at the Hun-garian Hall in Northampton was truly a delight. The vast variety of perfor-mances in true Karaoke form provided outstanding entertainment. A family style dinner and dancing to a wide variety of music culminated an evening of fun, fellowship and enjoyment.

There were several celebrations with cakes on Friday for Metropolitan Constantine’s birthday during sessions and evening social events.

Anne Bohen, UOL National Corresponding Secretary, announced the win-ners of the Annual UOL Essay Contest and presented each with an icon or certifi cate of participation.

SATURDAY: A special birthday celebration was held during business sessions for Melanie Nakonachny and Helen Greenleaf with a tray of cup cakes adorned with individual candles and an array of fl owers for Melanie and Helen.

outstanding video/fi lm presentation on their plans and facilities for the 59th UOL Convention during the business session on Saturday. Convention Chair Diana Teijaro demonstrated excitement and enthusiasm about hosting the 59th UOL Convention.

Diana’s excitement was contagious when Helen Greenleaf and Jona-than Patronak reviewed a brochure for the LANCASTER HOST Resort and Conference Center, that listed the 18-hole champion golf course as one of the many exciting attractions at the hotel. A golf outing on Wednesday of the 59th Convention is already being planned. Closing Ceremonies President Melanie Nakonachny closed the 58th UOL Convention and

requested that Archbishop Antony offer a closing prayer. Archbishop Antony concluded by saying: “We need you to contact the young and the older men and encourage them to become priests. You can play a signifi cant role in their “calling”. It is important that other than priests do this. Your saying something about the “calling” to the priesthood is very important.”

She shared that when Jesus returned to heaven following His ascension the heavens rejoiced having a great party for Christ. One of the angels com-mented, “Many great things were accomplished while You were on earth, but what about the rest of Your plan, how will it happen?” Jesus pointed to the 12 apostles gathered and said, “They are My plan. They will continue My work.” Similarly, today Christ is asked by another angel, “who is fulfi lling Your plan?” and Christ answers, pointing through the heavens to the UOL Convention body or a group of similar people, “They are My plan.”

St. Vladimir Sr. UOL Chapter MembersThe 2005 Sr. Chapter Achievement Award was presented to a chapter who

truly embodies the mission of the Ukrainian Orthodox League . . . Dedicated to the Church, Devoted to its youth.

St. Vladimir’s Chapter has worked diligently throughout the year to raise money for projects on both a national and local level. They sponsored a fundraiser for the All Saints Camp Chapel, adopted a mission parish, and made substantial donations to their own parish. In addition, their chapter members keep busy as Church School Teachers, Parish Offi cers, Readers, and Choir Members.

Dr. Natalie Bilynsky, Sr. U.O.L. Chapter President attested that “Each year we have an established routine of projects that promote spiritual growth, social responsibility and community development. . . . Our chapter is comprised of many wonderful individual members who come together to form a commu-nity—a spiritual team. Each member has his (and) her unique talents and roles that are integrated into a community that thrives and builds upon the strengths of each individual member. The strength of our chapter is that we are in fact a community that does not depend on one individual member but an unlimited group that works together as a team.”

The Chapter’s spiritual advisor, Fr. Frank Estochin wrote that “the members of the Senior Chapter of this parish make real the living Christ through their personal commitment to the Faith, which is refl ected in their various activities . . . they make Christ present and relevant in the lives of the other, be that other a member of the parish or not, an Orthodox Christian or not.”

This chapter is an integral part of the Ukrainian Orthodox League, serving as a model for other chapters.

BATTLE OF THE BOARDS“Fund Raising for Carnegie Flood Relief”

Sr. and Jr. National Executive Boards (’04-‘05)May Battle of the Boards Competition

During the 2004-2005 fi scal year, the Junior UOL National Executive Board sponsored its Special Project Donation which benefi ted the Carnegie Flood Relief Fund. Many chapters were involved by doing various projects, and the Junior National Executive Board decided to become involved by challenging the Senior National Executive Board to a chapter challenge style Battle of the Boards competition.

At the third board meeting in Northampton, PA the boards challenged each other, and unfortunate for the Junior Board, the Seniors won all three rounds, easily!! It was an exciting way to raise money for a worthy cause.

The overall Special Project Donation, with the Battle of the Boards combined to raise over $3,000 for Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Carnegie.

The St. John’s Jr. Chapter has been very active in their Johnson City Community. We have been involved in soup kitchens, hosting a Down Syndrome Dance, donating entertainment systems to BDC (Broome Development Center), running a booth at the bake sale, a talent show for all ages and an assortment of other things as well. We held a First Annual Down Syndrome Dance at the church hall for kids of all ages. It was held around Halloween—as a little costume party, and we sold pizza, drinks and other snacks as well. We collected for the BDC and with the money raised we bought entertainment systems for the forty and up age’s unit. As a little surprise we gave the residents ice cream. Our chapter was in charge of a Talent Show at our church at the beginning of May. This show is for kids of all ages and there were even some adults signed up to be in it too! We also ran a booth at the Bake Sale, selling hot dogs, pizza and soda as well. Jr. Chapter members encouraged kids to do the Annual UOL Essay Contest. We held a Lenten Dinner after Prescantifi ed Liturgy. The food was donated, then our members cooked and prepared the meal (of course we had to clean up TOO!). We started something different this year called “Prayer Pals”. Each member was assigned to three or four names of people on the sick list in St. John’s Church Bulletin and they pray for them and write them letters during the Lenten season. It is almost time to start the car wash fundraisers again. And, the junior’s always give a little something to the mothers and fathers of our church on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. We gave the mothers a little bag of sunfl ower seeds to plant and a little poem to go along with it. We still haven’t decided on our Father’s Day gifts yet, but they always get great little gifts that they all love! No matter what the event, fundraiser, or anything that we do, we always have so much fun and it’s always something we can look back on and remember Yours in Christ, Adam and Lauren Hatala

The Sr. UOL Chapter of Saint John the Baptist Parish in Johnson City, NY is back after a brief hiatus! Newly elected president, Pam Scanell has been working tirelessly to ensure that the chapter is as strong as ever!

During the 1950’s and 1960’s, the Johnson City chapter was the model for UOL chapters throughout the USA, having had a number of their members serve on the National UOL Executive Boards, hosting UOL Conventions and providing examples of quality programs and activities. The chapter’s reactiva-tion brings joy to the UOL world and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

NEW JUNIOR UOL CHAPTER – ARDEN HILLS, MN “WELCOME”

On Sunday June 12th, 2005 Sr. UOL President, Melanie Nakonachny, and Jr. UOL President, Katya Carman, presented a charter to the newly formed Junior UOL Chapter of St. Katherine’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Arden Hills, MN. The Jr. UOL charter was presented to this enthusiastic group of juniors following Divine Liturgy.

A delicious luncheon prepared by the parishioners was held in the hall following Liturgy, where both presidents were able to mingle with this very welcoming parish and were able to interact with the members of their new Junior chapter. During the luncheon, a presentation was made by a man who had recently traveled to Ukraine, in which he spoke about the change of the Ukrainian lifestyle before and after the Orange Revolution.

Although this luncheon seemed extravagant, we learned that this is common in this parish. They host luncheons weekly to maintain a close rela-tionship among the parish family and to allow Sunday to be a day to be spent with fellow Orthodox Christians before returning home. Also, this parish often hosts speakers, musicians and other events during their weekly luncheons.

On behalf of the Senior and Junior UOL National Executive Boards, we thank St. Katherine’s parish for hosting both Junior and Senior UOL Presidents. We also extend our prayers to this chapter that they may continue to grow in membership and that they have great success in the coming years with their projects. Mnohiya Lita!
