TARGETING THE ATHLETE
The Fuel + Recovery – Balance Training System (BTS) delivers a broad
spectrum of fundamental sports nutrition supplements to assist the
athlete to meet the challenge at every training session. For the athlete
who is looking to combine nutrient intake to the best effect, the Fuel +
Recovery – BTS makes it easier to make the right nutrition choices.
UNDERSTANDING THE TRAINING DYNAMICSRegular physical training requires careful planning to ensure that the
positive benefits outweigh any negative impact. Injury and illness can
ruin the best intentions, if athletes fail to allow for sufficient recovery
periods between training sessions, and fail to pay at tention to proper
nutrition. Athletes who aim to increase body size and their strength
capacity will frequently train as much as 4-6 days per week. With such
high demands on the body, close attention to nutrition is essential.
The structure of the individual athlete’s training programme will vary
considerably, but often involve a combination of both cardiovascular
training to create an increase in heart and lung capacity (aerobic
fitness) and resistance training, which encourages lean muscle
development and strength. When gains in lean muscle tissue are
paramount, resistance training will dominate.
A well-designed training plan should target specific aspects of strength
and fitness and cycle workloads, leaving adequate periods of rest,
during which other parts of the body can be worked. The rest period
is crucial to enable the body to carry out repair to damaged muscle
tissue and slowly become fitter and stronger. For committed athletes
who train multiple times a week and often per day, their training
programme structure is critical to ensure maximal gain and avoid
injury.
A basic training schedule, demonstrating adequaterest periods between similar sets of exercise, may look
something like this:

dietary protein in a convenient form that helps quantify actual daily
protein intake levels and make sure targets are achieved.
In addition to Whey Protein Isolates discussed in Module 2, some
of the common dietary sources of protein used in formulated protein
powders include:
Whey ProteinConcentrate
(WPC)
As a result of ultra-filtration manufacturing
process, WPC is an excellent source of protein, typically with a content greater than 80%. WPC
may contain small amounts of fat, although much
of the lactose and minerals have been removed.
Hydrolysed
Whey Protein
Increases the digestion and absorption rate by
partially digesting the complex protein into smaller
chains of amino acids called peptides. Can reduce
the incidence of allergy.
Caseinates &
Casein
Aside from Whey, Casein is the other major protein
fraction in cow’s milk. An excellent source ofGlutamine.
Egg Protein
Historically referred to as the ideal protein. Rich in
Arginine, an amino acid believed to aid the release
of human growth hormone and Nitric Oxide (NO2)
and consequently muscle development.
Soy Protein
A high-quality vegetable source of protein. Low
in fat and cholesterol free, soy protein is ideal
for vegetarian athletes and those with dairy
allergies.

100% WHEY PROTEIN WPC/WPI
For athletes committed to developing lean muscle mass and looking for
an extra boost to muscle growth, this advanced formula blends Whey
Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate and Hydrolysed Whey todeliver around 23g of protein per serve. Additional free-form amino
acids, Arginine and Glutamine are included to encourage the muscle
development process and promote positive nitrogen balance. Balance
Fuel + Recovery – 100% Whey Protein is the ideal choice before and
after exercise to meet the heavy demands of training.
SPORTS NUTRITION AND
THE FUEL + RECOVERY SYSTEM
CATABOLISM (CATABOLIC PHASE)
The process by which complex substances are
reduced to their simple precursors. Often accompanied
by the release of energy to fuel the body. i.e. The breakdown
of muscle for energy.
During each training session, the body enters into a catabolic phase,
in which the body utilises internal stores of carbohydrate, protein and
fat energy to fuel exercise and meet the increased demand for energy.
With this in mind, the athlete’s priority should be to:
• Maximise carbohydrate and amino acids (protein) availability
prior to beginning exercise. This helps to delay the onset of
catabolism and ensures that 100% effort can be delivered at each
training session
• Halt the catabolic effect quickly after exercise stops. Consuming
a supplement high in both carbohydrates and protein is ideal and
should be taken on board as soon as possible. Providing adequate
nutrients at this stage is central to optimal recovery
• Address the additional demands created by their individual training
programme throughout the day by following a systematic, well-
balanced and tailored nutrition plan
When gains in muscle tissue and strength are a priority, the athlete
must understand the mechanism behind muscle growth. Muscle tissue
is the body’s store of protein. Dietary protein is broken down into
smaller sub-units called amino acids. Those amino acids that are not
immediately required by the body are reassembled and stored in the
form of muscle tissue. This muscle tissue can be called upon at any
time to provide the body with amino acids for the synthesis of the new
proteins such as hormones, enzymes or structural tissue, when dietary
intake is insufficient. These dynamics highlight the need for an excellent
dietary intake of protein, both to build muscle tissue and reduce the
need to breakdown existing muscle tissue.
PROTEIN TURNOVER (NITROGEN BALANCE)
• The rate at which proteins are synthesised and
degraded
• Protein synthesis is stimulated by resistance exercise, high
protein intakes and internal requirements
• Protein degradation is stimulated during energy decits,
excessive workloads, illness, stress etc
• Depending upon the objective, the key is to encourage
protein synthesis (muscle gain) over degradation or to
maintain a balance (weight control)
DAILY PROTEIN FIX
There are many times during the day when the athlete is at an increased
risk of muscle catabolism because of reduced availability of free amino
acids within the body. Throughout the overnight fasting period,
first thing in the morning, post-exercise and after long periods
without food, are prime examples of periods when the rate of muscle
breakdown may be increased.
To combat these ‘muscle wasting’ episodes, the body needs additional
protein. Formulated protein powders provide an excellent source of

Looking more closely at the body’s need for protein during exercise, it is
clear that some amino acids are needed in greater amounts than others.
Achieving the correct amino acid profile means consuming a varied
intake of protein rich foods. The changing demand for amino acids
depends upon the roles they play within the body. If one particular amino
acid is drained from the pool of free amino acids circulating within the
body, the formation of new proteins will be adversely affected.
The mechanics of the supply and demand for amino acids are illustrated
as follows:
Supply fromdietary intakeof protein
Supply frommuscle tissuebreakdown
Demand forthe synthesis of
functional proteinsi.e. hormones,enzymes
Demand forthe synthesis of
structural proteinsi.e. muscle and
bone tissue
Demand for theprovision of energy

BRANCHED CHAIN AMINO ACIDS
Of all the amino acids, the Branched Chain Amino Acids ( Isoleucine,
Leucine and Valine), are particularly important, given their vital role
in muscle repair and recovery. The BCAA’s are heavily utilised as an
energy source and can, during prolonged exercise, be converted into
glucose (carbohydrate) energy to help sustain performance. This can
result in increased muscle breakdown and associated damage and
soreness, as additional BCAA’s are released into circulation.
Ensuring an increased dietary intake of BCAA’s can help to maintain
muscle mass.

GLUTAMINE
If the dietary intake is inadequate, increased muscle breakdown, which
can occur during intense exercise, will result in the release of the amino
acid Glutamine (from muscle tissue) into the circulation to provide
energy and a source of free nitrogen. Increased Glutamine during
exercise is required to fuel immune cells, detoxify the body and for the
formation of required proteins and glycogen.
Note: Glutamine makes up approximately 60% of your dry muscle
weight, therefore it makes sense that supplementation may result
in an increase in muscle tissue. Also Glutamine may assist in the
transportation of the other amino acids into the muscle.
Glutamine intake – studies have shown that athletes who supplement
with Glutamine enhance their performance and gain muscle. Studies
are based on 0.2kg/kg/day of supplemental Glutamine. Best times forsupplementation is upon rising, before training, after training and
before bed.
Glutamine provides 80% of the body’s free nitrogen and is important to help maintainpositive nitrogen balance following intense exercise.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT
Vitamins and minerals play a variety of critical roles within the body,
and the demands of sustained exercise can result in an increased need
for these micronutrients to fulfil their optimal function. The athlete’srequirement for vitamins and minerals may be greater than that
recommended for the general public. However, greatly exceeding the
recommended daily intakes is not recommended and does not result
in extra benefits on performance than simply meeting demand – the
