Financial Update, September 2016
Treasurer’s Comments
September pledge receipts were $63,656 bringing our year to date pledge receipts to $813,150. This is $80,000 (11%) more
than budgeted for 2016 and $115,000 more than last year at this time. Our positive pledge giving trend continues and when
combined with non-pledged giving of $58,782 so far this year, (last year’s non-pledged giving was $60,971 at this time), reduces
our projected operating budget shortfall at the beginning of the year from $251,000 to $90,000 at year end.
In summary then, if our positive pledge giving trend continues, we need an additional $90,000 in non-pledged giving over the
next 3 months to have a break even operating budget for 2016.
We continue to analyze expenses, and while we have a number of line variances, our projection continues to have us within
budget for 2016. There are a few variables that could change this, but it is more likely that we would be under rather than over
as regards our operating expenses.
We continue to work on our 2017 operating budget and plan to have it ready for December Session action and approval.
We normally send out a recap of your giving statements on a quarterly basis. This will be delayed one month due to internet
service issues associated with the hurricane. In November, we will issue statements covering the 4 months of July through
October.
Please continue to remember First Presbyterian Church as you review your estate planning. Also, take advantage of tax free
direct contributions to our church from your IRA.

2016-17 Concert Series by Jacob Craig
It is the purpose of our concert series to program music that fits the performance space we
have, and also to fill a niche in the community market for certain types of music. This typically
lends us towards chamber style music for our concert series, and this year is no different. We
have a very exciting line-up for our concert series this year all featuring our outstanding
Steinway B sanctuary piano. This is a truly rare instrument that has settled in very nicely. It had a
final balancing and voicing recently by a Steinway technician from Pompano Beach, and I cannot
express how beautifully this instrument plays. What an incredible gift to be able to make music
on this piano regularly!
We just held our first concert on October 30 at 4pm: a Piano/Organ concert featuring Jacob Craig and Justin Maxey. This
concert featured all duets of Piano/Piano, Piano/Organ, and Organ/Organ. It was highly virtuosic and featured many familiar pieces
and melodies set in new ways. In case you missed it, it can be viewed online by visiting our website: www.firstpresvero.org/watch-
live/. Here is a portion of his bio: Justin Maxey is completing his graduate studies in Organ Performance & Literature at the Eastman
School of Music and recently began a Doctoral Artist Diploma at Mercer University. He received the Bachelor of Music degree from
Shorter College in 2010. In addition to specializing in organ, Justin is also a seasoned solo pianist as well as a sought after
collaborative pianist/ accompanist. He is an operatic bass/baritone having several years of private study at the collegiate level. His skill
as an organist has allowed him to play in some of the most famous cathedrals in the world, including St. Peter’s Basilica in the
Vatican, St. Alban’s, Ely Cathedral, Christ Church (Dublin, Ireland), and St. Paul’s (London). Justin was awarded first place in both the
Atlanta Chapter (2009) and Rochester Chapter (2011) Quimby Competitions of the American Guild of Organists. We are beyond
grateful for his willingness to perform for us and for all who attended our first concert of the season.
On January 14 at 4pm, the Brass Roots Trio will perform. They have captivated audiences with breathtaking virtuosity and artistic
passion. With TRUMPET, FRENCH HORN & PIANO the trio creates symphonic sounds that melt into sultry jazz, making three
instruments sound like a small orchestra. Their adventurous programming takes unexpected twists and turns from early Baroque
gems to decadent tangos to American spirituals - and the audience is always surprised and thrilled when the horn player breaks out
into song with his brilliant tenor voice! Travis Heath (trumpet & Vero Beach native), Douglas Lundeen (French horn & vocalist) and
Rosetta Senkus Bacon (piano) infuse their music with exuberant energy, and their warm-hearted presentation establishes an
immediate connection with the audience. Now in its 10th season, Brass Roots Trio has played to standing ovations and rave reviews
in every corner of the US, UK and in Canada. In 2009 the trio was honored to perform at the White House.
Finally on April 30, 2017 at 4pm, Sergey Belyavskiy and Jacob Craig will perform a piano concert. This concert will feature solo
works by both Sergey and Jacob, as well as several four-hand collaborations. Sergey Belyavskiy is currently studying at the
Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory with Elisso Virsaladze. He has attended masterclasses with Van Cliburn, Andrzej Jasinski,
Leslie Howard, Vladimir Krainev and Boris Petrushansky, among others. He has won a large number of prizes, including Second Prize
from the Maria Canals International Music Competition in Barcelona in 2014. He previously won First Prize at the International
Vladimir Krainev Competition and was a prize winner at the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition in Budapest. Sergey
Belyavskiy has been a soloist with renowned orchestras such as the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra and the Tchaikovsky
Symphony Orchestra, performed in Europe, Asia and the United States in major concert halls such as Carnegie Hall in New York
and Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow. He now has three CDs to his name, one with works by Liszt.

Our Church Leadership Happy Birthday! - November
Susan Long—Profile of a Presbyterian Woman by Joan Irvine
She is a Hoosier by birth and a proud Floridian by choice and now has a new title “Faith Community
Nurse”. Susie Long with her husband, Terry, has found a church family at First Presbyterian Church, and
we are blessed.
Susie grew up in Marion, Indiana, the oldest of four girls. Her grandparents owned a corner grocery store
and the extended family worked there. They were actively involved in church where she sang in the choir
and attended the youth group. After high school graduation and going away for a semester of college, a
family emergency compelled her to return home where she worked as a nurse’s aide. This began her path
to nursing and public service. She graduated with a nursing degree from Indianapolis Methodist Hospital School of Nursing.
Susie married a childhood friend who was in med school and worked for the hospital while he completed his medical degree.
With the Vietnam war looming, the newlyweds were able to choose their hospital work, join the Public Health Service and
thus move to Bethel, Alaska, 450 miles west of Anchorage. During this time, their son, Scott was born. Though language
barriers of the Eskimos, Aleut and Canadian Native Americans presented quite the challenge, she overcame and worked both
in the OB department and developed a Candy Stripers program.
After a move back to Wabash, Indiana to be near their parents, their daughters, Shawn and Erin were born. Susie continued
her education (a task that took 13 years to complete). The family attended church with Susie singing in the choir and directing
church school. While the children were young, Susie did community volunteering and worked to revitalize the County Medical
Society Auxillary. She did grant work to receive free car seats for infants, birth to 3 months, through a loaner program at the
hospital in their town. Additionally, she served as president of the Indiana Child Passenger Safety Association and lobbied for
seat belt laws for children and adults.
During this time, Susie separated from her husband and moved to Fort Wayne with her daughters while her son stayed with
his father. It was a difficult time for Susie as she left her home, family, friends, church, hospital, volunteering endeavors and
worst of all, her son. Realizing that she needed to support herself as a single parent, Susie enrolled in courses at the Fort
Wayne branch I. U. of Purdue to receive her B.A. in Psychology. The year she completed her studies, her mother died and her
divorce became final. She then applied to graduate school at Smith College, Northampton, Mass. where she earned a Master’s
Degree in Clinical Social Work in 1991. In 1993, Susie relocated to Raleigh-Durham and began work in a practice with three
psychiatrists. Her focus was Biopsychsocial which combines the mental and physical aspects of health to treat the whole
person. She eventually opened her own practice. Sometime later she moved to New Smyrna Beach, Florida to be closer to
her sister, where she again developed a private practice.
Fate stepped in when Susie attended her 50th high school reunion. Seeing Terry Long, a former Marion school and church
friend, was “magical”. At that time his wife was suffering from dementia, but after she died, they found each other again and
were married in 2014. Their combined family lovingly grew to 5 children and 10 grandchildren. Susie retired and each sold
their homes and bought a new home to start their life together in Vero Beach. Next they went searching for a church and
found First Pres! It was a perfect fit--the service, music and...the handbell choir for Susie! They joined in June, 2015. Susie is a
Deacon-elect, sings in the choir and plays handbells.
Anne Adams soon discovered that Susie had the credentials, expertise and enthusiasm for Faith Community Nursing and
approached her to work within FPC. Susie has agreed to be our Faith Community Nurse, referring, advocating for and
counseling church members. Currently Susie is studying to combine her Biopsychosocial counseling with spirituality. It is a
calling that has really excited her as she completes specialized studies at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Baycare Health System in St.
Petersburg. Her goal is to provide physical, mental and spiritual healthcare to the church and the community. She began last
year by organizing a Health Fair that had 24 community services representatives and over 75 people attending. Next year’s
health fair is scheduled for January, 2017. And, on Nov. 18, she will participate in ”Diabetes Head to Toe” a community
symposium to be held in McAfee Hall. She’s planning a shared grief holiday survival course and is hoping to do a mindfulness
education seminar in the spring. Watch for her notes in the First News.
Susie’s favorite hymn tells us about her Christian faith, “When Morning Gilds the Skies”. She explains, “It is the joy that you feel
for Jesus that comes from knowing He is always within us”.

Set aside December 3rd for Christmas Tree Lane!
On Saturday, Dec. 3rd, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, the Center for Christian Life will be transformed
into a festive holiday mecca, as the Presbyterian Women stage our most ambitious charitable
fundraiser of the year, Christmas Tree Lane. Since early October, chair Joan Irvine and her various
committees have been busily preparing for this much anticipated event, with the goal of surpassing
the nearly $10,000 raised for area charities last year.
Both floors of the Center will be bustling with holiday boutiques filled with countless gift ideas and
stocking stuffers. The first floor will open to Handmade Treasures, with its enchanting American
Girl doll clothes, snap bags, and more. The Unique Boutique, the largest venue, will feature a host
of new and nearly new items. In the Artisans’ Gallery, you’ll find exquisite handicrafts by our own
talented church members. Be sure to stop by the raffle-ticket table as well, where you can take a
chance on the beautiful handmade lap quilt on display. Also on this level will be the Candy Cane
Café, where weary shoppers can relax and refresh.
The second floor will be devoted to making your holiday entertaining deliciously easy, starting with
our always-sold-out-early Cookies-by-the-Pound with its homemade cookies of every description.
NEW THIS YEAR is Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen, where Santa’s missus (aka we church ladies!) will have on
hand fruit pies, tempting candies, and other homemade goodies. The popular Louisville pecans for
your holiday baking, nibbling, and hosting needs will be there as well.
Capping this merry day: an elegant Ladies Holiday Luncheon, this year catered by Chelsea’s.
Luncheon tickets are a non-refundable $25 and must be purchased in advance through the
church office no later than Monday, November 29th.
Calling All Cookie-Bakers
Cookies-by-the-Pound is one of the strongest draws for Christmas Tree Lane, and its success relies
upon the many wonderful volunteers who bake batches and batches of tempting goodies to grace
our cookie-sale tables. Now’s the time to pull out your favorite recipes, buy your ingredients, and
get started! All cookies MUST be in disposable containers (labeled with cookie name) as we will
not be able to return the containers to you.
Help Us Stock Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen
Are you more of a pie-maker than cookie-baker? Or maybe you’re known for your homemade
pickles/relish or jams/jellies? Whatever your homemade specialty – from cakes, brownies, and
cupcakes to candy, granola, or spice bags – Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen welcomes and needs your special
forte to make its Christmas Tree Lane debut a success.

FPC Orchestra
It is with great excitement that I am able to write about the
beginning of a very exciting and impactful musical program at our
church, and that is our very own orchestra! Over the summer I was
very impressed by the willingness of our community to open up their
programs to recruitment and the result is a beginning roster of 32
orchestral musicians. The purpose of this group to provide an
enhanced musical worship experience through instrumental playing
and accompaniment. The vision of this group is to eventually become
a full symphonic orchestra with balanced families of instruments. This
will open our music program to an entirely new realm of musical
possibilities, as we will now have “built-in” instrumentation at our
disposal. From harp and piano duets, to string quartets, to small
chamber groups, the magnitude of musical variety will increase
dramatically, all the while enhancing the backbone of our choral and
worship programs. This group of instrumentalists will be utilized for all of our cantatas, and very soon will be able to start per-
forming their own specials during the worship service as well. I am so grateful to my other musical colleagues in this town for
their incredible warmth and kindness in promoting this program with their groups and students, and look incredibly forward to
many wonderful musical moments as we continually expand and enhance our worship services. It is very evident from the sup-
port this community has for First Pres that we are indeed Building Faith, Changing Lives, and Sharing Christ.

In The Spotlight
Children’s Christmas Pageant
Set in a traditional Christmas Nativity, this musical takes
place in Bethlehem in the two days leading up to Jesus'
birth. But there is a not-so-traditional "twist" with this
musical which features new characters, including some
very cool talking and rapping sheep. Yes, I said talking
sheep!
Rehearsals began Sunday,
October 9th, and the kids are
already having a great time
preparing for the big
performance day! Mark your
ca lendars for Sunday ,
December 11 th , 6 :00
PM. The children are already excited about sharing this
fun-filled musical and the message about God's gift of His
Son!
The next Men's Fellowship Luncheon of the season is set for Friday, November 11th,
2016 at 11:45am in McAfee Hall. The program will feature retired MLB pitcher,
Fernando Arroyo. Born March 21, 1952, Fernando played for the Detroit Tigers,
Minnesota Twins, and Oakland Athletics. In eight Major League seasons, he had a 24–37
record over 121 games (60 started), with 12 complete games, two shutouts, 28 games
finished, 535 2⁄3 innings pitched, 589 hits allowed, 288 runs allowed, 264 earned runs
allowed, 56 home runs allowed, 160 walks allowed, 172 strikeouts, 11 hit batsmen, 15
wild pitches, 2,289 batters faced, 13 intentional walks, four balks and a 4.44 ERA. On
March 13, 2010, Arroyo was inducted into the Mexican American Hall of Fame in a
ceremony held at the Jose Rizal Community Center in Sacramento, California.
We’re looking forward to hear his story and hope to see you there! It's so easy to let
us know you're coming - either by calling the church office or going online to our
website - and the kitchen staff will thank you.
Chef Gene's delicious noontime repast, served by his cheerful galley slaves, will fortify
your body while you enjoy this interesting speaker and have an opportunity to ask
questions about happenings in our community. All this is still only five bucks including a generous helping of traditional, warm
First Presbyterian fellowship. Where can you get a better deal? Come out and hear an excellent speaker, enjoy a good meal,
and be part of our ever growing fellowship. Why not ask a couple of friends to join you?
See you at lunch on Friday, November 11th!

1:30pm, in E.T Smith Lounge. Led by Susan Long, our Faith Community Nurse, this retreat will give you insight on a variety of
subjects from how to cope to making decision on holiday invitations. This special retreat will conclude in the Chapel with a
