Philip A. Connelly Awards Program

Born in Framingham, Massachusetts in June 1907, Philip A. Connelly became a leader in his chosenprofession-Food Service Management.He worked diligently and earnestly throughout his life to promote professionalism in food service, in both the civilian industry and military services. As a result of his dedicated purpose and positive influence, civilian and military food service programs are more closely aligned and personnel in these programs now have uniform goals in education training, career development and jobopportunities.

Active Army Garrison Evaluator

CW4 JOEY ESPANOLA

Joey is a California native who has served and dedicated over 25 years in the United States Army as a food service professional. He is currently stationed in Fort Lee, VA serving as the Quartermaster Food Service Technician Training Developer for the Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM). His duties and responsibilities include writing programs of instruction and training development for Food Service Technician Warrant Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Warrant Officer

Intermediate Level Education Follow On, and Warrant Officer Senior Staff Education Follow On Courses.

His military and civilian education include: Warrant Officer Basic Course, Warrant Officer Advance Course, Warrant Officer Intermediate Level Education Course, Warrant Officer Senior Staff Education Follow On Course, Common Faculty Development-Developers Course, Unit Movement Officers Deployment Planners Course, and Food Service Contracting Officer Representative course. He has earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management with a concentration in Logistics from Ashford University, Master Certified Food and Beverage Director from the Global Food Service Institute, and is a Demonstrated Master Logistician from International Society of Logistics. Joey is also an Honorable Order of Saint Martin recipient. He continues furthering his education in pursuit of a Master’s degree in Supply Chain Management from American Military University.

His previous assignments include: Food Advisor, 62nd Medical Brigade at Fort Lewis, WA; Food Advisor, 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, WA; Senior Food Advisor, 8th Theater Sustainment Command at Fort Shafter, Hawaii; Senior Food Advisor, 45th Sustainment Brigade at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Installation Senior Food Advisor/Observer- Controller-Trainer, National Training Center at Fort Irwin, CA; Training with Industry Fellow with Sodexo USA at Gaithersburg, MD.

His awards and decorations include: Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, and Meritorious Unit Citation.

Joey is happily married to his wife Joyce for over 21 years and they have two wonderful girls, Jocelyn (20) and Jolyna (10).

Active Army Garrison Evaluator

SGM Gerald Lee Hunter Jr. U.S. Forces Command Deputy Chief of Staff, G-4 Chief Culinary Manager Sergeant Major Traveling with Active Army, Duty SGM Gerald L. Hunter Jr. is a native of Detroit, Michigan. SGM Hunter enlisted in the Army in May 1992. He completed Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Lee, Virginia. SGM Hunter has an Associate Degree in Applied

Science-Psychology and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Liberal Arts from Excelsior College. His highest military decorations consists of the Army’s Legion of Merit and multiple Meritorious Service Medals. SGM Hunter has over 27 years of Active Duty service, having all years served in Food Service. He has served in numerous positions and locations around the world performing Food Service Operations at many levels. SGM Hunter manages Requests for Information and Tasks for logistic operations as well as provides guidance on maintenance and replacement of food service equipment. His duties also includes establishing plans, policies, and procedures for both Garrison and Tactical Food Service Operations. SGM Hunter currently serves as the U.S. Forces Command (FORSCOM) Senior Chief Culinary Manager SGM, where he is responsible for overseeing the management of over 4700 Food Service Culinarians. FORSCOM is comprised of a total of 131 Dining Facilities, which make up approximately 88% of the Army’s total Food Service Facilities. FORSCOM currently provides an approximate 2.4 million meals a year for the dining Soldiers and Civilians on the installations.

Active Army Garrison EvaluatorBrett Ladd CEO Government North America Sodexo Traveling with Army Active Duty Brett Ladd, CEO of Government, North America, for Sodexo, responsible for serving the U.S. Federal, State and Local Government Markets. Under his direction, Sodexo provides 140,000 meals daily at 150 locations and is the nation's largest food-service contractor to the U.S. Government. Top clients include the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force and over 25 Federal Agencies. Brett is a member of the North America Regional Leadership Committee for Sodexo, the global leader in Quality of Life services. Previously, he led growth

and client retention initiatives as Sr. Vice President of Sales for Government North America. Mr. Ladd was a member of the Executive Team when Sodexo commenced its formal Government Segment in 2002. Having joined Sodexo/Marriott in 1988, Brett brings over 30 years of global leadership experience to Sodexo. He started his career as a production manager and has held positions in Sodexo’s Universities and Schools segment as an in-unit General Manager, District Manager and Operations Vice President. In addition to leading Sodexo’s Government Segment, Brett enjoys supporting organizations such as the United States Marine Corps Scholarship Fund and local Children’s Theater organizations. Additional, Brett was elected as a trustee to the National Restaurant Association Board and National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation.
