*LITANY (BASED ON PSALM 23) Everett Schleter

One: Let us gather before God, the one who has shepherded his people through hardship toward hope, from age to age.

All: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name's sake.

One: Let us recall with wonder the protective love of our God. All: Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and

your staff - they comfort me.

One: Let us celebrate the bountiful provision God offers us. All: You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my

cup overflows. One: With gratitude to our Good Shepherd, let us pray:

*UNISON PRAYER

We thank you, God, for your diligent guidance. Truly, your love embraces us all from birth through eternity, moving us along your path. We may resist your care, but you are persistent. We stray, but you do not desert us. And so we say with confidence: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Amen.

READING FROM THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES Dr. Robert T. Baggott

One: God’s message finds utterance in our midst. All: We wait and listen for God’s word to us today.

Ezekiel 34:11-16

11For thus says the Lord God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. 12As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. 13I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. 14I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down, says the Lord God. 16I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice.

RESPONSE

One: God seeks the lost and gathers the scattered. God feeds and tends the sheep. All: Wherever we’ve wandered, however we’ve strayed, God finds and restores us to the fold.

*HYMN OF DEVOTION “Savior, Like a Shpherd Lead Us” BRADBURY CALL TO THE GOSPEL Rev. Holly H. Adams

One: Silence in us, O God, any voice but your own. All: May your Word be proclaimed and received here today.

Page 5: 5.19… · 2019-05-17 · 5 John 10:11-18 11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own

5

John 10:11-18

11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away--and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father."

RESPONSE

One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Thanks be to God!

ANTHEM “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need” Chancel Choir

arr. Mack Wilberg

My Shepherd will supply my need; Jehovah is his Name; In pastures fresh he makes me feed, beside the living stream.

He brings my wand’ring spirit back, when I forsake his ways, And lead me for his mercy’s sake, in paths of truth and grace.

When I walk through the shades of death, thy presence is my stay; One word of thy supporting breath drives all my fears away. Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, doth still my table spread; My cup with blessings overflows, thine oil anoints my head.

The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days; O may thy house be mine abode and all, and all my work be praise!

There would I find a settled rest while others go and come, No more a stranger, nor a guest; but like a child at home. No more a stranger, nor a guest; but like a child at home.

MISSION MINISTRY GLOBAL PRAYER PARTNER: HAITI. Michelle McKay serves with the National Spiritual Council of Churches of Haiti (CONASPEH). Sadly, when one thinks of Haiti, one thinks of political corruption, natural disasters, and extreme poverty, rather than scholars. But at College St. Andre (a CONASPEH secondary school), scholar is a common title. For over five years, select students can receive full scholarships to attend secondary school and to universities. They study civil engineering, criminal justice, computer science, as well as nursing. Being a scholar requires steadfast dedication. To be called a scholar is a badge of honor for any student, especially in Haiti. The scholarships allow students opportunity, a future, and hope. Prayer: All loving and gracious God, You have given us a new commandment - to love one another. We thank You for being the perfect model of love. You came to show us how to truly serve others, and by doing so, to love them. We pray, Lord, help us to put aside our egos, our “good intentions,” our personal agendas, assumptions, and fears, so that we can love others with a humble spirit and open heart. Lord, help us to be ready, at any moment, at all moments - to love. Amen.
