Out of the Darkness: In Memory of Lyon Mountain’s Iron Men by Lawrence P. Gooley

Out of the Darkness, SECOND EDITION, shines a light of recognition on more than 175 men who died in the iron mines of Lyon Mountain, New York.

Who were they? How did they die? You’ll find the answers here in a tribute to the men who lost their lives while on the job. Drillers, muckers, furnace workers, timbermen: they’re all here. Many suffered horrible, spectacular deaths, as detailed in the newspaper fashion of the day, tending towards graphic, gruesome imagery. There is no shortage of such stories in this book, so be prepared for some intense reading. The reality of Lyon Mountain’s many tragic accidents includes explosions, amputations, and decapitations.

But there’s much more here than reports on fatalities: details of mine accidents from 1878 through 1966; genealogy and bio information on each victim; inside info on individual accidents; photos of many miners; actual newspaper reports with full headlines and complete stories; new info on Lyon Mountain’s role in history; and dozens of amazing stories and facts on Lyon Mountain’s mine deaths.

This SECOND EDITION contains new illustrations, several pages of new information, and adds names to the death toll, bringing it to 176.

Lyon Mountain: The Tragedy of a Mining Town by Lawrence P. Gooley

For a century, the best iron ore on earth came from the depths of Lyon Mountain’s mines. The ore served many industries, but most notably was the primary source of steel used in support cables for many of history’s best-known suspension bridges, including the George Washington and the Golden Gate Bridge.

This history of Lyon Mountain is supported by many interviews of elderly miners conducted by the author 35 years ago. Extensive quotations appear throughout the book, bringing the story to life.

The book’s first section details the town’s early mining history (1870s through 1920), followed by Lyon Mountain’s

years as a company town under the iron fist of mine manager J. R. Linney; the town’s immigrant population and its roots; firsthand accounts of mining jobs from long-deceased miners; the riveting story of death in the mines; the remarkable true story of the town’s Mafia-connected years; and finally, the story of the North American Champion bobsled team and the legendary Lyon Mountain Miners Baseball Team.

Escape from Dannemora: 170 Years of Escapes, Tortures, and Infamous Inmates at New York’s Most Notorious Prison by Lawrence P. Gooley

Clinton Prison has hosted the best and worst criminals in the country, from gentleman scam artists and bank robbers to vicious serial killers who murdered on a whim and dismembered their victims. Included within these pages are those stories and much more—ingenious breakout artists and how they escaped, details on severe punishments and tortures imposed at Clinton for a half century, and profiles of dozens of the most famous, infamous, and unusual prisoners ever confined within Dannemora’s walls.

This book was already in progress when the stunning escape from Dannemora occurred in June 2015. It was a spectacular breakout, but contrary to what was widely stated in the media, hardly unprecedented. Men went over and under the wall on many occasions prior to 1929, which is the line of demarcation that separates the old from the new. During the eighty-five years following 1929, no one escaped from inside the high wall until Richard Matt and David Sweat did it. But during the eighty-five years prior to 1929, it was done many times in exciting, ingenious, and spectacular fashion.

Included in the book is the story of the 2015 escape, the long history of violence and horrible tortures at Clinton, a look at escape attempts and more than three dozen breakouts, plus profiles of many famous and infamous criminals who were incarcerated at Dannemora.

Terror in the Adirondacks: The True Story of Serial Killer Robert F. Garrow by Lawrence P. Gooley

In summer 1973, a serial-killer’s rampage in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State terrified thousands of residents and vacationers. Innocent campers were brutally knifed to death. People armed themselves, slept with guns, and lived in fear. It was a reign of terror the likes of which the mountains had never seen.

And it was all the vile handiwork of one very troubled, dangerous man: Robert Francis Garrow.

But there is much more to Garrow’s story. Before his capture, there was the longest manhunt in Adirondack history, and one of the longest the state has ever seen. There was a bizarre trial, with horrifying revelations that

shocked the senses of citizens from coast to coast. There was also Robert Garrow’s unfortunate, unbelievable childhood,

including horrific beatings, bestiality, bloodshed, and more. There was his secret life of crime as an adult, his frequent improbable escapes from the law, his years in maximum-security prisons, and his incredible manipulation of legal, medical, and correctional professionals right up to the state level. It’s an incredible story, and it’s all here. For the first time ever, Robert F. Garrow’s story from birth to grave. Not a pretty part of Adirondack history, but a part of it nonetheless.

Killing in the Kuyahoora Valley by Lawrence P. Gooley is the true story of a murderous attack in 1914 by a teenager in the village of Poland, New York. Kuyahoora, the native-American name for West Canada Creek, is in Herkimer County. Poland, in the southern Adirondack foothills, is about 15 miles northeast of Utica.

The death of petite schoolteacher Lydia “Lida Lou” Beecher at the hands of a former student was a landmark case—the first to cite imbecility on the same level as insanity in determining a defendant’s guilt or innocence. America’s courts would never be the same.

The viciousness of the crime, the intensity of the trial, and worst of all, the indifference and arrogance of the killer were all reasons why a public mania surrounded the proceedings every step of the way. In the wake of the Chester Gillette–Grace Brown story, the Jean Gianini case assumed the moniker, “Trial of the Century.”

It’s a remarkable, true, and disturbing story of how evil can sneak up on those unaware, how successful family men sometimes hide the darkest of secrets, and how juries can be manipulated by silver-tongued attorneys.

Oliver’s War: An Adirondack Rebel Battles the Rockefeller Fortune by Lawrence P. Gooley

The award-winning true story of Oliver Lamora’s battle with billionaire William Rockefeller is told here for the first time. For a decade in the early 1900s, their saga gripped newspaper readers from coast to coast.

William Rockefeller was the brother of John D. Rockefeller. Together they built the Standard Oil Trust, the richest, most powerful corporation in American history. The aging Lamora was a hunter, fisherman, and lumberjack all his life in the far northern Adirondack Mountains of New York State.

He was surviving on a meager Civil War pension when William Rockefeller decided to build a grand mountain estate. Lamora’s home was in the dying village of Brandon, and Brandon was in Rockefeller’s way. Some people moved, but Oliver didn’t. Soon a disagreement evolved into a running battle between two headstrong men of widely divergent backgrounds. The story received newspaper coverage from the New York Times to the San Francisco Examiner.

The old woodsman fought to preserve a treasured way of life. This is the true story of Oliver Lamora, an Adirondack original.

A History of the Altona Flat Rock – Silver Anniversary Edition, an award-winning book by Lawrence P. Gooley

Massive ice sheets, raging rivers of glacial meltwater, and spectacular waterfalls have left the Altona Flat Rock with dramatic cliffs and a spectacular landscape. Officially defined as a Sandstone Pavement Barrens, it tops the world’s list of endangered ecological systems, with fewer than 20 similar sites existing around the globe.

In the past 150 years, man has made his mark on Altona’s pine barrens, and it’s all here, with one-of-a-kind historical photographs, new illustrations, and new information updating the initial release in 1980.

You’ll hear stories from old-timers, told in their own words. This Silver Anniversary Edition retains all of the great

original stories: the Blueberry Business, the Million-Dollar Dam, the Hermit of Flat Rock, the massive fire of 1957, which drew national attention to the area; and much more. Take a journey into New York’s past, to a place described in 1842 as “the land of whortleberries and pigeons, rattlesnakes and trout.” You won’t be disappointed.

Brendler’s Boys: The House That George Built by Lawrence P. Gooley

Few sports teams in the North Country have achieved the success attained by the Chazy boys’ soccer team. In 59 years, they’ve had only 4 seasons without a winning record, a phenomenal achievement.

In 1965, Chazy soccer entered a new era under Coach George Brendler. When he retired from coaching after the 1988 season, he left a tremendous legacy. The team continued to flourish, culminating in several state championships. The Eagles’ ongoing success is rooted in Coach Brendler’s efforts.

But George Brendler was more than just a great soccer coach. He was an American child and a Hungarian child, a

victim of the Great Depression, and witness to the worst war in history. He was a soldier, a student, a teacher, and a husband and father. He survived many dangers and overcame many obstacles, driven by a powerful will to survive and prosper.

Above all, he worked hard, and that would always be part of his formula for success, both in life and on the soccer field. This is the story of George’s life, his coaching career, and the history of Chazy soccer.

History of Churubusco and the Town of Clinton, Clinton County, New York by Lawrence P. Gooley

Churubusco village has an unusual name and an unusual range of historical connections. The town of Clinton’s population is sparse by any measure. And yet Clinton natives have played a leading role in the history of the county, the state, and other states as well.

The scope of their reach is surprising. A state leader who was FDR’s confidant, and who befriended and battled some of America’s most famous politicians. A founding father of Seattle and the state of Washington. Bluegrass musicians at the top of the nation’s charts. A vital member of the US Olympic Bobsled Team. These (and many others) are people who have made a difference.

Two Volumes and 143 Years of Vintage Baseball!

The Only Game in Town: A Century of North Country Town-Team Baseball, 1860–1960 by Robert M. Garrow

In the post-Civil War decades, social gatherings between villages included parades, picnics, dancing, singing, and a variety of games and sporting competitions.

Baseball was a regular feature of these communal affairs. By the late 1800s, the game had assumed a leading role at such civic assemblies, gaining prominence locally as it mirrored baseball’s popularity nationwide.

In the 1900s, as the automobile simplified travel, baseball ruled as the main attraction, with hundreds in attendance and town-team games, and sometimes thousands. The sport became an important part of American life. Youngsters admired national and hometown stars alike, aspiring to reach greatness themselves.

Local events focused on the tri-county area’s largest population center, Plattsburgh, in Clinton County. But included here is much information on the great teams and players from both Essex and Franklin counties as well. The three are forever united in having produced some of New York’s finest ballplayers.

The Last Run: North Country Town-Team Baseball, 1960–2003 by Robert M. Garrow

In this sequel to the author’s first book (above), which covered town-team baseball for a century beginning in 1860, the story is carried through the five most recent decades of North Country baseball from 1960 to the 2000s.

It was a period of great change, where longstanding teams ended their association with league play, while others from as far away as Tupper Lake and Schroon Lake joined the battle for baseball supremacy.

There’s no shortage of great stars from the past, many of whom went on to star in college and at different levels of minor-league play. Some had true major-league potential that was sometimes thwarted by injury or other circumstances.

The author, an outstanding player and coach in his own right (he played in the Dodgers’ system), pays tribute to many of his former teammates who achieved remarkable success as players, managers, and umpires. Game reports and complete playoff coverage reveal the great exploits of many stars from the past fifty years. Included is the story behind the Plattsburgh Falcons, who for five seasons, 1957–61, competed on a high level in the Quebec Senior League.

And I Know Too Much to Pretend by Lorraine M. Duvall“As an elderly male, I would not have

expected to enjoy reading a memoir with this title. A friend sent it to me, and I was surprised to find that I loved it! It is a wonderful exploration of those amazing years (1950s and 60s) when feminism began to take root. It’s hard to believe how many ways men mistreated women then. Duvall is a master storyteller, and her tales of prejudice and support, of cowardice and bravery, truly hit home. Give this book a read and you will be the richer for it.”

When We Becomes I. Again. by Emily Lanier SelleckAs the author transcribed her

three journals—kept while caring for her husband during the final year of his life—the feelings she’d experienced throughout that time returned full bore. And with them, more remote but similar feelings soon gathered themselves into discrete memories she then laid out like squares in a quilt and stitched together in her book.

This is a story of two journeys for the author: one with her husband, Than, interrupted by his death; and one she

began when she was three years old that continues now in her seventies. You’ll see they cross multiple times. Life is like that.

Philip Skene of Skenesborough by Doris Begor MortonPhilip Skene of Skenesborough was

originally published by Doris Begor Morton in 1959, the bicentennial of Skenesborough’s founding in 1759.

"Mrs. Morton has for a period of 12 years been engaged in gathering every scrap of information on both sides of the Atlantic concerning the life and activities of the founder of her adopted town. ... This biography has been prepared from the depth of that knowledge of and sympathy with Philip Skene of Skenesborough—that she may set the record straight, correct erroneous legends and provide the background for an understanding analysis of one of the prominent citizens of our colonial period whose achievements were so outstanding that even his espousal of an unpopular political affiliation could not obliterate his place in the history of this nation and of this Champlain Valley in particular." —Jane M. The History and Construction of the United States Schooner Ticonderoga by Kevin J. Crisman

This report was prepared in 1982 after a series of trips to the Skenesborough Museum in Whitehall, New York, to examine and record the hull of the U. S. Navy War of 1812 schooner Ticonderoga. The support of the Skenesborough Museum was, and still is, greatly appreciated. This 2016 edition has been produced by the Skenesborough Museum with permission of the author.

This report contains both a short summary of Ticonderoga‘s history as well as a detailed look at the construction of the hull as Crisman and his team recorded it in 1981–1982.

Little Champy Goes to School by Gordie Little is two things: a wonderful story about the family of famous Lake Champlain “monsters,” and a lasting memento to the bridges that have spanned the lake at Crown Point. Illustrations of both bridges appear in color on the covers and in black-and-white within the book’s pages.

The story is about Little Champy learning how to undulate. Supported by his mother, Mama Champy;

his father, Big Champy; and his grandfather, Old Champy, he attends school far beneath the Lake Champlain Bridge.

The teacher is Aunt Champanella, who works hard to teach her students what they’ll need to know, especially about undulating.

Author and North Country media legend Gordie Little created a wonderful story, supported by the beautiful black-and-white artwork of his good friend, Les Bradford.

Life in Whitehall During the Ship Fever Times by David Wilson

The story within, written by David Wilson (editor of Solomon Northup’s Twelve Years a Slave) in 1849, first appeared in installments in The Whitehaller, a weekly newspaper published by William S. Southmayd and H. W. Buel. In 1871, the story again appeared in serial form. Additional chapters were included in the latter version, as well as in this version originally published in 1900 by Inglee & Tefft.

Many of the characters in Wilson’s tale represent real persons, and Whitehall streets and buildings are mentioned by the names they bore in 1847. In addition, this 1900 Inglee & Tefft publication includes many advertisements for Whitehall businesses that were active at the time, as well as many photos of Whitehall buildings, streets, organizations, village officials, and more.

The Fort Edward Book: Historical Sketches, with Illustrations and Family Records by Robert O. Bascom

Fort Edward was known by Native Americans as the “Great Carrying Place,” where watercraft were transported overland from

the Hudson River to Lake Champlain. In 1709, it was the site of a British stockade called Fort Nicholson. By 1732, it was an English settlement under Colonel John Lydius, and was referred to as “Lydius’s House.” In 1745, the French and Indians destroyed the settlement. In 1755, General Phineas Lyman built Fort Lyman. In 1756, it was renamed Fort Edward for England’s Prince Edward. In 1764, brothers Patrick and James Smyth settled at the present village of Fort Edward, building a house from the fort’s timbers. It was later occupied by Schuyler, and then Burgoyne, and is known today as the “Old Fort House,” believed to be the oldest house in Washington County.

The Salem Book: A History of Salem, Washington County, New York from 1765–1895, researched and written by multiple Salem citizens.

In 1891, members of the Salem Historical Committee, fifty in number, undertook a daunting task: documenting as much of Salem’s history as possible. To do this, a majority of the individual members tackled various subjects that needed to be addressed. They researched, interviewed, wrote, and edited, aided by the local historian.

In the end, the accumulation of works was brought together and assembled into The Salem Book, with chapters addressing 41 topics. It’s a story that dates back more than 300 years, well prior to the birth of the United States.

The Battle of Plattsburgh: What Historians Say About ItAfter defeating the British on Plattsburgh Bay, Thomas

Macdonough sent his superiors a humble message from “the USS Saratoga off Plattsburgh, September 11, 1814” to Hon. W. Jones, the Secretary of the Navy: “Sir: The Almighty has been pleased to grant us a signal victory on Lake Champlain in the capture of one Frigate, one Brig, and two sloops of war of the enemy.” Historians over the years celebrated Macdonough’s victory, including

Teddy Roosevelt, who said: “Down to the time of the Civil War, he is the greatest figure in our naval history. ... he was skillful and brave. One of the greatest of our sea captains, he has left a stainless name behind him.”

The Heroes of theBattle of Plattsburgh, 1814

The Life of Commodore Thomas Macdonough by Rodney Macdonough

Commodore Thomas Macdonough is one of America’s great naval heroes, as acknowledged by historians and military men alike. Ninety-five years after his stirring victory on Plattsburgh Bay, the commodore’s life story was proudly recorded by his grandson, Rodney Macdonough.

Among the source materials used were a wide array of documents preserved in the commodore’s own private collection, including an autobiography that covered his naval adventures during the period 1800–1822.

Details are also offered on Macdonough’s ancestors, his younger years, and his remarkable career filled with danger, excitement, narrow escapes, bravery, and excellence as an officer of the United States Navy. He served on many American vessels of great fame including the Philadelphia, Enterprise, Guerriere, and of course, the Saratoga. His final command was the Constitution (Old Ironsides). He remains today among the greatest of military heroes in the annals of New York history.

Alexander Macomb is revered as a hero for his critical role in the American victory at Plattsburgh on September 11, 1814. As the authors notes, “We see him attracting the attention and winning the applause of Jefferson, and enjoying the confidence and support of every successive President and Secretary of War. The manners of Macomb, entirely free and natural, are yet

Bessboro: A History of Westport, Essex County, New York by Caroline Halstead Royce

… The name of Westport was given to the town in 1815, after it had known at least thirty years of recorded history.… It is true that William Gilliland was an Irishman, and that if any man had a right to name this town, that right was his, but he never called it Westport. His name for the place was BESSBORO, after his daughter Elizabeth.

This name we have taken the liberty to restore upon our title page and cover. Of all the twelve original patents into

which the soil of our township was divided, as they were granted by British king or American Congress, one only was named and settled by the man who first owned it, and that was Gilliland’s Bessboro.

Peter Sailly, Plattsburgh and Champlain Valley Pioneer (1754–1826) by George S. Bixby

The story of Peter Sailly, who came to Plattsburgh, New York, from France in 1785 and spent forty years there, is a journey of 230 years into the past. Sailly became a businessman and community leader, playing many roles in the development of northern New York.

For 17 years, he held the important position of Collector at the Port of Plattsburgh. He also served as an army contractor, military storekeeper, county judge, member of the Assembly, and member of Congress.

Sailly was a close friend and frequent host of John Jacob Astor—fur trader, America’s first multi-millionaire, and at his death in 1848, the wealthiest man in America.

Many of Peter Sailly’s records were preserved in the hands of his grandson, Judge Peter Sailly Palmer of Plattsburgh, including Sailly’s diary, letters, and other documents. They were passed on to Palmer’s daughter and Sailly’s great-granddaughter, Katherine Palmer, who donated many of them to the New York Library. Much of this book’s contents are drawn directly from those materials.

Reminiscences of Ogdensburg, New York, 1749–1907 by the Daughters of the American Revolution

Chronicled here in outstanding fashion is the early history of Ogdensburg, New York (on the St. Lawrence River in northern New York State). Included are firsthand accounts taken from early settlers, providing rare insight into the joys and struggles of life on the early frontier.

These reminiscences were collected by the local DAR chapter, which notes:

“The personal anecdotes have been gladly furnished by those who remember the exciting events of 1837 and the years succeeding, while the reminiscences of the pioneer days have been given verbatim as related by those of our friends who remember the tales as told to them by their grandfathers and grandmothers who were children when this old town was new.”

Other sources of information included old books, interviews, family letters, and diaries of early settlers. Reminiscences of Ogdensburg is a wonderful work of history that provides an invaluable account of daily life in northern New York from the mid-1700s through the early 1900s.

An Autobiography: Edward Livingston Trudeau, M.D.The humbly written life story of Dr. Trudeau, who

revolutionized the treatment of tuberculosis, a disease that was killing “one in seven of the human race.”

This brilliantly written life story is inspiring, funny, and tear-inducing. To great effect, Trudeau conveys the feelings of loss upon the death of loved ones, as well as the sense of hope that survives. In describing the remarkable work of the Sanitariums, he credits dozens who were instrumental through donations,

hands-on work, and moral support.There’s plenty of early history here, too, covering Saranac Lake’s past;

surviving the difficult weather conditions in early days; and Trudeau’s close friendship with Paul Smith and several Adirondack guides.

Author Charles Warner relates commonly told tales with uncommon humor and insight, not unlike the writings of his good friend, Mark Twain.

Among the memorable trips within is a hike through the Dix range with Orson “Old Mountain” Phelps, who was about 60 years old at the time.

Warner’s exploits are memorable, and his rendering of them even more so. Hikers and mountain climbers will grin with knowing nods at many passages, and all readers

will doubtless enjoy both the author’s great ability with words and his exciting Adirondack sojourns.

Woods and Waters, or The Saranacs and Racket by Alfred B. Street

Alfred B. Street is among the greatest of Adirondack writers. With the heart of a poet (he actually was a well-known, excellent poet), Street ventured into the Adirondacks, home to hunters, tough woodsmen, dangerous wildlife, extremes of weather, and rugged landscapes.

Although hunting was the primary component of most trips for the men involved, Street assumed the role of observer, noting with great detail and vivid, descriptive passages all that occurred around him. He learned the history of places visited, and the legends as well, preserving many of them for posterity.

Whether you’re a fisherman, hunter, canoeist, hiker, mountain climber, historian, recreational reader, or any combination thereof, you’ll thoroughly enjoy the stories within. Street virtually takes you by his side to share journeys of more than 150 years past.

Trappers of New York, or A Biography of Nicholas Stoner and Nathaniel Foster by Jeptha R. Simms

Besides the life stories of two of the most famous woodsmen in Adirondack history, Nicholas Stoner and Nathaniel Foster, this book contains voluminous information on William Johnson’s settlement at Johnstown, and the area that today encompasses Sacandaga Lake—before the lake existed.

See the Adirondack wilderness in the mid-1800s through the eyes of legendary woodsmen, as they carved a living by hunting, fishing, and trapping. Explore the back-country from the Mohawk River to the Fulton Chain of Lakes, a wild and lawless land shared in uneasy fashion by settlers and Indians.

Included are Stoner’s violent encounters with rival woodsmen from different tribes, plus Foster’s ongoing

conflict with a neighbor Indian, told in part through court testimony from the subsequent trial for murder.

Sparkles from Saratoga by Jennie E. HicksIn the late 1800s, Jennie Hicks

(pseudonym, Sophie Sparkle), a popular newspaper writer for the New York Daily Mail. Her social columns, written from a humorous and satiric point of view, offered a good-natured skewering of the wealthy and elite of society.

Her writing style and keen powers of observation made her, in effect, a fore-runner of today’s Jane Goodall, providing an insightful, entertaining behavior study of a group many

Americans remain unfamiliar with—the rich and the very rich, enjoying summer leisure at Saratoga Springs.

Cape Vincent and Its History by Nelie Horton CaslerThe town of Cape Vincent is steeped in history due to

its strategic location on the Canadian border, where Lake Ontario flows northeast in the waters of the St. Lawrence River. It was a key location in both the French and Indian War and the War of 1812. Playing important roles in the town’s past are a number of islands, including Wolfe, Carleton, Fox, Grenadier, and Little Grenadier.

The material covered here spans three centuries, beginning in the 1600s with the exploits of Count de Frontenac and other voyagers. Among the military men important to Cape Vincent’s history are Sir Guy Carleton and General Frederick Haldimand.

Outposts in northern New York at that time were few in number, and events elsewhere were tied to Cape Vincent, as

confirmed in letters, diaries, and orderly books that have been preserved. Linked to the town’s past, and related within, are destructive raids in the Mohawk Valley, scalpings, the Battle of Johnstown, and the death of Walter Butler, the most reviled of all British Loyalists in upstate New York, a man responsible for the terrible massacre of civilians at Cherry Valley, where a witness described “such scenes of cruelty … between thirty and forty women and children butchered.”

Cape Vincent’s long history during peacetime is covered in detail, including settlements, businesses, noted citizens, churches, and civic groups. Also included are 250 gravestone inscriptions from early cemeteries.

The Indian Pass by Alfred B. StreetIn 1869, long before the

modern trail system existed across the Adirondacks, author Alfred B. Street undertook an incredibly ambitious journey: to see “four gorges, peerless in majesty”—Indian Pass, Panther Gorge, the notch of Whiteface, the Dial Gorge—plus the Ausable Lakes, Lake Colden, and Avalanche Lake. For good measure, he visited summits that include Marcy, Whiteface, and Hurricane.

Street recorded his impressions and observations of the Adirondacks while touring remote, beautiful locations that in some cases had been seen by very few men. For aficionados of the mountains and regional history, this lasting record of his travels is priceless.

Historical Sketches of Northern New York and the Adirondack Wilderness by Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester

Lawrence River. In 1838, Ebenezer Emmons applied the term “Adirondack” to some of the mountains in northern New York. It eventually came to define the entire region.

Dannemora’s Death House: The Crimes and Fates of 41 Killers Sentenced to Die in Clinton Prison’s Electric Chairby Lawrence P. Gooley

In 1890, when electrocution replaced hanging in New York State, Clinton Prison became a house of execution for the next 24 years. But not every killer who was sentenced to death died in the electric chair. Some were saved by fate, mercy, legal action, or last-minute reprieves. While some ultimately survived, most did not. By 1914, when all executions were moved to Sing Sing, 26 inmates had been electrocuted at Clinton.

Inside are the stories of 41 murderers who were sentenced to die in Dannemora’s electric chair. Graphic details of many brutal attacks are covered, including victims’ injuries as provided in coroner and autopsy reports, so this is not a book for the squeamish—but it is a book for fans

of true-crime stories. There’s plenty of drama, passion, and angst throughout in stories ranging from shocking to frightening to just plain remarkable.

In most cases, you’ll find quotations citing the words of the killers—and even some of the victims—as they provide personal accounts of murderous attacks. The stories here, all of them true and noteworthy, were compiled from multiple official sources, but primarily from trial and appeals transcripts.

The criminals profiled here came from the state-designated Clinton Prison “district”: counties along the Hudson River, a wide radius in all directions from Albany, and all lands north to the Canadian border. In each case, their offense was the only crime still punishable by death—first-degree murder—mostly committed out of jealousy, anger, or vengeance.
