My Dear Parishioners,

As Ben Brescia, our Blood Donation Drive Coordinator told me, "April 29th was a day filled with old friends and new friends who came to donate blood and celebrate our ten years of success... A night filled with balloons brought to salute this, our tenth

year of blood drives." Ben spoke at all the Masses a few weeks ago, sending out the word for donors, and our parish family responded. 62 donors gave 59 units of life saving blood. As an added blessing 7 of these 62 'heroes' were able to donate a double red cell unit via a special process using an ALYX machine. Many of our donors brought along others to donate. It was inspiring to see whole families come to the Drive to donate. Nine of the 62 donors were present at our first blood drive on May 10th, 2010. Ben tells me Ms. Jennifer McCorry, the NYBC coordinator for Staten Island declared, "Wow! You did it again, It is an honor to work with St. Sylvester's". Throughout the day our volunteers provided invaluable support. Pat Bertolini organized the Hospitality Sunday Women's Group into shifts to cover each hour of the Blood Drive, ensuring that all the donors were properly cared for and comfortable. Over these ten years many in our parish family have done such good work. For example, Barbara DaQuila who donated blood and volunteered at our first blood drive in 2010 has been donating and volunteering her service for the past ten years, donating almost 2 gallons of blood at our drives. Ann Orton, soon to be 93 years young, continues to work as a volunteer at the drive each year. We are blessed with wonderful people performing wonderful deeds and no single person can take credit for this success—it is truly always a team effort through which so much can be done. Many thanks to Richie Salinardi, Joanne Certo, Anthony Santiago and our other friends in Lifestyles who setup the tables and chairs, and provided nutritious sandwiches and cookies for our donors. Jennifer McCorry and Cathy Nolan of the NYBC coordinated the technical support throughout the day. Thanks to Janet and Jacob Samuel for bringing us enough cakes and cookies to fill a bakery. As in past drives there was a stead-fast core of volunteers which included Terry Dicks, Judy O'Donnell, Teresa Strianese, Adele Fernandes, Rose DeLuccio, Margaret Donahue, Marie Stewart, and Peter Tesoriero. And now we look to the future. The need for blood will always be with us. So, as in past years we have com-mitted our Parish to a Drive in the fall—our annual 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive on Monday, September 9th. Please mark your calendars for the event. Keep smiling, Fr. Jacob
