What could be better than helping people harness their entrepreneurial spirit? Well, that’s what we thought when we became involved in Micro Financing five years ago with Vision Fund (small loans to the poor) in Mongolia.

Micro Financing is a totally sustainable lending system to help many people in third world countries, where the majority of small business owners are women, which resonated with Julianne, as a woman in business herself! Mod’s are still convinced that this effort is what we want to commit to five years on.

The support from Mod’s Hair, and others in New Zealand, means that Vision Fund Mongolia is now able to Self-sustain, obtaining funds from commercial banks. For the poor in Mongolia this means they have an ongoing source of loans.

So, with World Vision our focus now switches to Tanzania. Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world, with over 50% of the population living well below the national average income of US$1.85 a day. VFT (Vision Fund Tanzania) microfinance activities can have a substantial impact on the livelihoods of farmers, with positive spin-off results in the areas of children’s education, nutrition, health and shelter. VTF’s research suggests that farmers

who gain access to loans to acquire appropriate agricultural inputs, such as seeds and fertilizer, can at least double their income after all loan-related expenses have been repaid.

It’s easy to forget about these people who are thousands of miles away, and we get caught up in our own lives. The reward for us is the opportunity to truly change lives. What could be better than that?
