    Lab 1: Managing Backup and Recovery

    Exercise 1: Restoring Data Using the Recovery Storage Group

    Task 1: Populate Arlenes mailbox

    1. On SYD-CL1, log on as Gregory with the password Pa$$w0rd.

    2. ClickStart and then clickE-mail.

    3. ClickNew and then create a new message:

    To: Arlene

    Subject: Message before Backup

    4. ClickSend.

    5. Log off as Gregory.

    Task 2: Perform an offline copy backup of the mailbox database

    1. On SYD-EX2, open the Exchange Management Console.

    2. Expand Server Configuration, and clickMailbox.

    3. In the details pane, clickSYD-EX2, and on the Database Management tab, click

    Mailbox Database and then clickDismount Database.

    4. ClickYes.

    5. Open Windows Explorer and browse to D:/Program Files/Microsoft/Exchange

    Server/Mailbox/First Storage Group. Select all of the files in the folder and press

    CTRL+C.

    6. In Windows Explorer, browse to the C: drive and create a new folder called

    MDBBackup. Open the folder and press CTRL+V to paste the database and

    transaction log files to the folder.

    7. In Exchange Management Console, mount the Mailbox Database.

    Task 3: Delete a message

    1. On SYD-CL1, log on as Arlene with the password Pa$$w0rd.

    2. ClickStart and then clickE-mail.

    3. Right-clickMessage before Backup and then clickDelete.

    4. In the left pane, clickDeleted Items.

    5. Right-clickMessage before Backup and then clickDelete.

    6. ClickYes to permanently delete the message.

    7. Close Outlook.

    Task 4: Create a recovery storage group

    1. On SYD-EX2, if necessary, open the Exchange Management Console.

    2. In the console tree, clickToolbox, and then double-clickDatabase Recovery

    Management.

    3. ClickDo not check for updates on startup, clickI dont want to join the program

    at this time, and then clickGo to Welcomescreen.

    4. In the Enter an identifying label for this activity box, type Recovery Storage

    Group

    5. In the Server name box, type SYD-EX2.

    6. In the Domain controller name box type SYD-DC1.

    7. ClickNext.

    8. ClickCreate a recovery storage group.

    9. ClickFirst Storage Group, and then clickNext. You must configure the recovery

    storage group to hold a specific restored database.

    10.Take note of the recovery storage group file locations, and then clickCreate the

    recovery storage group.

    11.ClickShow Create Recovery Storage Group Information. This displays details

    about the recovery storage group.

    12.ClickGo back to task center.

    Task 5: Copy the database files

    1. In Windows Explorer, copy all the files in the C:\MDBBackup folder.

    2. Browse to the recovery storage group folder located in D:/Program

    Files/Microsoft/Exchange Server/Mailbox/First Storage Group.

    3. Paste the mailbox and transaction log files to the recovery storage group folder.

    Task 6: Merge the mailbox data

    1. In the Microsoft Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant, clickMount or dismount

    databases in the recovery storage group.

    2. Select Mailbox Database and then clickMount selected database.

    3. ClickGo back to task center.

    4. ClickMerge or Copy Mailbox Contents. You can also mount or dismount

    databases in the recovery storage group and remove the recovery storage group from

    here.

    5. ClickGather Merge Information.

    6. ClickShow Advanced Options. These options control how mailboxes in therecovery storage group are matched with user accounts. You also can filter messages

    to be recovered based on a date range or subject.

    7. ClickPerform Pre-merge Tasks.

    8. ClickPerform Merge Actions. Merging Arlenes mailbox is successful.

    9. Close all open Windows.

    Task 7: Verify successful message recovery

    1. On SYD-CL1, clickStart and then clickE-mail.

    2. Verify that Message before Backup has been restored to Arlenes Inbox.

    3. Log off SYD-CL1.
