WHITE LUNG & UPSETCHURCHILLS TAVERN
CHRISTCHURCH
8PM, $40, UTR.CO.NZ
This will be an explosive punch-in-the-face of girl power from a truly epic double bill. White Lung are Vancouver punks, confrontational yet extremely listenable, drawing you in before getting kicked to the ground. Their new album Deep Fantasy has been doing the rounds on the blogosphere. Alongside them is Upset, a punk super-group, featuring Best Coast, Vivian Girls and Hole members. This will be big.
SCHOOLBOY QLOGAN CAMPBELL CENTRE
AUCKLAND
8PM
Schoolboy Q is wild, crude and all-round awesome. His sophomore album Oxymoron took the explosive partyvibe hip-hop of his first album to another dimension. A member of the Black Hippy collective, he is the most successful member barring Kendrick Lamar. He is a West Coast rapper with an East Coast mentality, full of lyrical content and sharp delivery. His performances are known to be crazy and enigmatic.
EARTHBODEGA
WELLINGTON
8PM, $47, UTR.CO.NZ
From Seattle, Earth are a seminal drone and doom band. Their first three albums were all landmarks in their own right, influenced by Black Sabbath, and have striven to reduce rock to its fundamental elements, creating hypnotic reverb that is beautiful and brooding. Their influence is everywhere in modern music and their live shows are described as a religious awakening: utterly consuming.
ELLIE GOULDINGTSB BANK ARENA
WELLINGTON
8PM, $75, TICKETEK.CO.NZ
Ellie Goulding has been blasting her unique blend of indietronica across our airwaves for quite some time now. Her electrifying performances have become legendary, having played huge venues like Future Music Festival. She creates primal excitement with bird-like high notes skipping to darker tones of sorrow at the flick of a switch. Anything could happen, so go check it out.
BLACKLISTTTHE BEDFORD @ CPSA
CHRISTCHURCH
8PM, $40, EVENTFINDER.CO.NZ
Blacklistt are one of New Zealand’s most iconic metal bands. The band contains most of the members of the pioneering band Blindspott and they have retained their dynamic intensity when performing live. Death circles and fearsome mosh-pits will be here in abundance as the band takes to the stage in their new incarnation.
VELVET ACID CHRISTTHE KINGS ARMS
AUCKLAND
8PM, $30, UTR.CO.NZ
With a name like Velvet Acid Christ, you should already know if this isn’t going to be your cup of tea. But for everyone else who feels like a dose of soft, stingy and holy, then this Denver-based electro industrial music is a must. Popular in the underground nightclub scene of Germany, his music has consistently been groundbreaking and edgy.

Shit worth doing screen
DJANGO UNCHAINED SKY MOVIES PREMIERE, 8.30PM
Django has all the ingredients to make a classic Tarantino movie; obscure soundtrack, bad-ass dialogue, a splashing of ultra-violence and a cameo from the director himself. Like Inglourious Basterds, this film has a feel-good element to its violence as Jamie Foxx kicks slave-driver butt.
2014 FIFA WORLD CUPTV ONE
Sadly the All Whites won’t be heading to Brazil to take part in Fifa World Cup, but the tournament will feature the biggest names in football. Watch as England struggles to get out of their group and Australia are expected to get slaughtered in their ‘group of death’. The battle is on and there are clear favourites.
GOK’S STYLE SECRETSVIBE, 8.30PM
Gok, the lovably annoying fashionista, is back, giving style advice and romance revamps to a collection of clueless characters. His new show helps Britain’s singletons get back into the dating world, giving them confidence where they were previously lacking. Gok seems to have a knack for hunting out the seemingly hopeless and finding their hidden beauty.
FRASIERJONES!, 8.05PM
Hang on, aren’t spin-off shows supposed to be cheap imitations of their successful originator? Frasier was a mega-hit that spawned from the show Cheers and follows Dr. Frasier Crane, a brilliantly pompous psychiatrist who hosts his own radio show. The show is sophisticated and witty, yet hilarious enough in its slapstick comedy to be a fan favourite for a wide audience.
FANTAILGENERAL RELEASE
New Zealand indie cinema is on the rise at the moment. Here, a South Auckland petrol station is the setting. The film looks at the diverse culture of New Zealand as Tania, a tired graveyard shift worker raised Maori, is torn between family bonds and other responsibilities. The film is a musing on everyday struggles and is based around Sophie Henderson’s one-woman stage-play.

22 JUMP STREETGENERAL RELEASE
No one was expecting 21 Jump Street to be the runaway success that it was – an outrageously silly film that was absurd and thrilling. The sequel was bound to happen. The stars, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, having survived high school, go undercover again, this time at a university.
TONY AWARDS 2014 ARTS CHANNEL, 8.30PM
Even for those that have never been to Broadway, the Tony Awards is a star-studded extravaganza that gives the Oscars a run for their money. The ceremony is pure camp hilarity with stars such as Hugh Jackman and How I Met Your Mother’s Neil Patrick Harris lavishly performing classic theatrical numbers on stage. The theatre is all about grandiose performances and design, and the Tony Awards carries this tradition spectacularly.
7 DAYSTV 3, 9.30PM
Give those chilly bodies a warming supply of belly laughs as mirth is dished out by local and international comedies on 7 Days. A mixture of old favourites and up-and-coming Kiwi comedians will be on the panels as well as international big-hitters from around the globe. The show returns to our screens on Friday 13 June for its 151st episode. Be there or be square.
LOUIE - S4COMEDY CENTRAL, 10.15PM
Louis CK had made a big name for himself before writing, directing and more or less being involved in every aspect of this hit show. His observational humour is refreshing in his piss-taking of his American countrymen. Laughing at the way we live our lives, the show consists largely of unconnected storylines dealing with everyday ordeals and our quests for love.
PRINCE AVALANCHE RIALTO CHANNEL, 8.30PM
The Rialto Channel works as a seal of quality, delivering a wide range of acclaimed cinema. This comedy features heart throb Emile Hirsch and comedian Paul Rudd as road workers arriving at a disaster struck area of Texas. Tensions between the characters mount as their personalities clash, eventually bonding over shared confessions.
GOOD VIBRATIONSGENERAL RELEASE
The Northern Ireland post-rock scene is not an era which jumps to most people’s minds. But it is at the centre of this new comedy biopic about Terri Hooley, owner of Good Vibrations, the record store instrumental in the scene’s formation. The music is linked with the country’s resistance – creating a band of punks crawling from the underground to create a new alternative community.

NPR’s website offers not just radio streaming but also a variety of videos of talents up-start artists performing in intimate settings. These live recordings are separated into; tiny desk concerts, studio sessions, field recordings (performing out in the open in neighbourhoods). There is a range of music writing on subjects ranging from blues to D’Angelo. NPR Music is offering a platform from which enthusiasts can digest all their music information, a more mature Pitchfork which offers a radio stream as well.
EENY MEENYMJ ARLIDGE
A startling drama involving the familiar theme of “kill or be killed”. M.J. Arlidge throws the reader head first into this dark , fast paced thriller that gives new meaning to the term “compulsive”. A cat and mouse tale about a depraved killer, the novel has a Zodiac Killer air about it, as the investigators of the crimes hunt elusive answers only to find the investigation turn full circle back onto them.

2014 FIFA World Cup
Ever wanted to play football at your local? To celebrate the FIFA World Cup launch, select bars around the country will be running Budweiser Poolball Nights. Poolball was launched by Budweiser in 2012, cleverly designed to bring together some of our favourite activities – hanging out in a bar, playing pool, and our love of the beautiful game. Teams compete head to head on a 2m x 4m field, in a game that is similar to pool but played using football skills. Same pool rules… same football fantasies – it’s about time someone brought football and nightlife together.Keep an eye out for Budweiser Poolball at the Bud Nation accounts – the perfect place to watch the games and

THE QUADRANTCORNER OF ALMA ST & VICTORIA ST,
HAMILTON
The Quadrant has the classic feel of an Irish pub, soaked in ambiance and the smell of dark ale. Sport-nuts of the Waikato gather here to watch their team win and lose or just for the sheer joy of seeing some great sport in action. The bar is serious about their soccer too – every Sunday they have been replaying league matches and the place will be exploding for the World Cup.
FOX HOME OF SPORT85/87 CUSTOMS ST W, AUCKLAND
A classic sports bar, The Fox strives to be your local in the heart of the city. The bartenders have made it their mission to be up to date on all the sporting gossip. The pub has ten big screens blasting all the big games, live and loud. This is the pub that will be OPEN, any time of the day, perfect for those awkward Brazilian kick-off times.
SKYCITYCNR FEDERAL & VICTORIA ST, AUCKLAND
The SkyCity complex has decided to get fully wrapped up in the soccer frenzy. They will be celebrating the launch of the World Cup with live screenings on the Thursday morning. This could be a good spot to meet with mates over a cup of coffee or a cheeky morning beer, getting into the swing of the footy festivities. A Samba band will be playing for the Brazil game as you watch the team of the moment work their magic.

DEPOT86 FEDERAL ST
AUCKLAND
Al Brown, celebrity chef extraordinaire opened Depot as one of his flagship Auckland restaurants. It reflects his attitude towards cuisine: in season, beautifully cooked and to be enjoyed with friends. The place is famed for its seafood, especially the oysters as well as their sliders which have fast become a trend themselves. Located in the regenerated Federal Street, most of the cooking is done over charcoal, giving the food a real succulent flavour. The diversity of selection is best realised by ordering a selection of small plates to be passed around. The wine list is excellent and a reasonable size which means it isn’t intimidating. Go for the energy which is fast and fun without the pretentiousness you’d expect.
COFFIX K’RD184 K’RD
AUCKLAND
Coffix K’rd serve coffee for $2.50. Is there anything else that really needs to be said? Oh, you need a little more to be convinced? The managing director stated she was sick of the high prices that have become the norm around Auckland, especially with such a strong coffee culture here. Served out of a kiosk on the famous street, head here if you like your coffee straight and cheap.
NIKAU CAFÉ101 WAKEFIELD ST
WELLINGTON
Wellingtonians must be a serious bunch of caffeine addicts, judging by the number of quality cafes they produce. Nikau Café has been around since 1998 and serve yummy coffee alongside fresh tasty produce. Their staff give off warm vibrations which fit well with the light-filled rooms and open courtyard. Come in for breakfast and lunch or just a coffee to get you through the day.
PRAGUE599 SANDRINGHAM RD
AUCKLAND
Since 2011 its European swank, affectionate decor and welcoming courtyard has provided casual comfort in a cosy corner. A sweeping selection of fine wines, craft beers, cocktails or all your favourites are at your fingertips with the menu boasting intricate dishes such as the sweetcorn BLT stack through to the humble home style mac ‘n’ cheese. Pop in…before you pass out.
L&R’S JUICE BAR1 WILLIS ST
WELLINGTON
The owners opened L&R’s Juice Bar in 2009 because they believed there was a lack of healthy and affordable takeaway options in Wellington. Since then they have worked hard to deliver a range of nutritious lunch options in the city. The team is passionate about what they do and want to increase the health benefits without losing the flavour of their food.
CBD BAR208 MADRAS ST
CHRISTCHURCH
The CBD bar has it all, an ambient bar that serves as a deli/café with authentic wood-fired pizzas to boot! The place oozes sophisticated cool with its black tiled bar and handsome liquor selection. They host live music throughout the week and are open from 11am until late. They have happy hours as well as guest beers to tempt the taste buds.

SHAILENE WOODLEY STARS opposite Ansel Elgort in The Fault in Our Stars, a life-affirming story about Hazel and Augustus, teenagers who meet at a cancer support group and fall in love.
Both witty and irreverent, they form a strong bond and set off on an unforgettable and altogether surprising journey.
At its heart, the movie is an inspiring tale of young love. Told with tenderness and humor, the film was directed by Josh Boone and is based on the bestselling novel by John Green.
Shailene Woodley on playing hazel and the power of young love.
How exciting was it getting the part? I really, really wanted the role. I fell in love with the script and then I immediately read the book. I saw it as an opportunity to play a deep, challenging character. I wanted the role so badly that I sent John Green an email about how I had to play Hazel. Finally I met the director, Josh Boone. I left the meeting feeling really good, because I knew I had done everything I could possibly could to bring Hazel to life. Luckily, I got the part!
What kind of person is Hazel? Hazel knows who she is and understood from a young age that life is
fleeting, none of it matters and we’re all insignificant. She realises that worrying, stressing or trying to make a mark on the world is just a waste of time. So she lives for the small moments and appreciates them. I think it is a huge thing to understand that at such a young age.
There is great chemistry between you and your leading man, Ansel Elgort. You worked together previously on Divergent. Did that make it easier? Divergent was a hard shoot and we became good friends. We naturally have an affinity, a strong friendship, respect and pride in one another. Going straight from that to The Fault In Our Stars was such a gift. We were comfortable around each other without having to go through the process of breaking down walls and figuring each other out. We were able to just jump into the characters.
Did you talk to teenagers with cancer to prepare for the role? I met with people who were in similar situations as Hazel. Actually the support group in the movie is made up of people who are either in remission or have been through cancer in the past. But we didn’t really talk about cancer, we talked more about life. The second that you realize you don’t need to ask someone what it’s like to have cancer, you get to know them as a human
being. You realize, ‘Oh my God, you’re the same teenager as I was. Yes, you’re dealing with something that is so above and beyond anything that I dealt with at that age, but that’s not who your heart is.’ I learned that cancer doesn’t define people. They’re normal people going through the normal processes of life.
What was it like working with Laura Dern? She is the best. It was great getting to meet and work with her. Laura is pretty much the same mom with Hazel as she is with her own kids. Hazel’s mom doesn’t treat her like a sick kid with cancer. She treats Hazel as a normal teenager going through normal things, who just happens to take medicine every few hours.
What would you say we discover about life in this film? It’s saying that nothing is guaranteed and nothing is fair. So instead of spending life in fear, hate, or insecurity, own your day, because it might be your last. It might not even be your last day, it might be your last morning. I’ve always been a really grateful person, but doing this movie has made me celebrate life more. I think it is important to live your life with love, compassion and kindness towards all things because that is the only thing life is about, the only thing.
