Dear families of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Confronted with God’s power and majesty, the first response of the prophet Isaiah was to acknowledge his sinfulness. “Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips,” he said aloud. Likewise, with his empty fishing nets dramatically filled at Jesus’ instruction, Peter fell to his knees and cried out, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Next, Peter got up. He docked his boats then left to follow Jesus. Isaiah also had a dramatic change of heart. When he heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Isaiah answered, “Here I am, send me.” We are summoned daily by the Risen Lord. We are reminded of the saving power of the gospel and know in our heart of hearts that, as St. Paul wrote, believing in anything else won’t lead to anything. What will it take for you to move past your sinfulness? What will it take for you to get off your knees? What will it take for you to bring to dock what is unimportant and to accept your call to be God’s messenger? There will be a Marriage Retreat here at Immaculate Heart of Mary on February 22-24. This retreat will be a testimony of the Sacrament of Marriage for those already married and for those planning to marry. Take time to strengthen the relationship you have with your spouse and deepen your commitment to each other in your marriage. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us. Don’t miss these upcoming Guest Speakers for Teens and Parents! Our Confirmation Program will be hosting a Nationally Recognized Young Adult Missionary Team called the Culture Project. Speakers are all recent college grads formed in Catholic Social Teaching and committed to a vibrant lived faith, Missionaries give dynamic presentations on the virtue of chastity, the importance of marriage and family, and the dignity of every human life to high school students and young adults. These talks are open to ALL high school teens (grade 9 and up) and young adults and parents regardless of enrollment in Confirmation. Friday, February 15, 2019, 7 pm in the Hall - Social Media Talk With the advent of modern technology, smart phones, and social media our world has changed forever. How do we navigate this new social landscape that no generation has had to navigate before? Designed to follow up our Human Dignity and/or Sexual Integrity presentations, this presentation will engage students in a dialogue about how to integrate virtue and excellence into their use of Social Media. We discuss how our use of media can either contribute to or endanger our personal happiness, our relationships, and the type of person we ultimately become. We share the great benefits to using social media, as well as how to avoid some of its biggest downfalls, such as comparison, isolation, inauthenticity, even habits like cyber-bullying and sexting. Through the use of stories, cultural examples, and personal witness, we invite students to consider their own use of media and how we can all utilize the incredible tools that our modern day offers to become a force for good in our communities and become people who leave a lasting positive impact on our world. The Reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an unattractive side of human nature by pitting contestants against one another, even to the point of performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor. At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ’s total gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God’s own life. We are to become what we receive: the body of Christ. On Sundays, this self‑giving is often accompanied by a collection and procession of gifts for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collecting money, some per-haps more efficient. Yet the act of giving from our abundance, and attending to the needs of the poor, opens us up to participation in the changes the Reign of God requires.

Cuando era niño a mis primos mexicanos les gustaba contarme cuentos de la Llorona, la mano negra, bultos que flotaban en los cementerios, y lucecitas azules que aparecían sobre tesoro escondido por bandidos de siglos pasados. Estos cuentos también se escuchaban en el Valle del Río Grande de Texas, donde me crie. Confieso que me fascinaban y asustaban esas misteriosas leyendas, así como los relatos de santas y santos que levitan, tienen visiones, escuchan voces celestiales o chorrean sangre de llagas que recuerdan las llagas de Cristo en la cruz. He escuchado el llanto de la Llorona, y me parece haber visto la mano negra. Sé que mi carro se movió solo en un lugar donde murieron unos niños sobre un autobús escolar. Los latinos sabemos que hay muchas cosas que no se pueden explicar, simplemente se vive con el misterio. Y ¿a quien no le atrae un buen misterio? El sentido del misterio nos atrae y nos intimida en el misticismo de los santos cristianos. Are you New to Immaculate Heart of Mary We are a very vibrant and active parish in Brentwood whose mission is, “With Mary, we seek to know Christ better and to make him better known through our words and actions.” We do this in a variety of ways through our several sacramental prep programs, social outreach, as well as our active ministries, Bible studies, and an energetic youth program. We also LOVE new parishioners and hold quarterly “Welcome Dinners” specifically for those new to IHM. See our bulletin for details on the date for the next upcoming Welcome Dinner. Extra Rosaries or Prayer Cards?????? We are once again collecting rosaries and prayer cards for our youth ministry teens. Our goal this past year was to give each teen in our program a bible and a rosary AND WE SUCCEEDED!!! However, we are running low on rosaries now. If you have any extras and would like to donate please drop them off at the office labeled with “Julie Figueroa.” Our teens often need or share a rosary with others in crisis and even themselves can find comfort in the various prayer cards we put out each week. We thank you in advance for sharing the faith with our teens and their friends in need.

Hopefully by now most of the parishioners have had the chance to see the hall with the new flooring and the painting. We also have put shades on the upper windows. These were parishioners companies who performed the work. We would like to thank Daniel Cereda for the shades, Ed Gomez for the painting and Jorge Martell for the flooring. All of these licensed contractors need to be thanked for the wonderful job done not only to maintain our parish hall but also improve the facility. At this time the facility committee along with the finance committee are planning out the needs for 2019 to make sure we continue to keep IHM maintained and beautiful.
