50 ScapeS: a magazine that lets you, the viewer, escape into one of our country’s beautiful states. So relax your mind, and focus on what is in front of you. Dive deep into detail, and dream about your future. Where will you go? What will you see? 50 magazine focuses on the land and its many uses. It is also a self-portrait of my travels around the country in order to capture everything the states have to offer. Issue 001 is focused around Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii, which are the three major islands that make up the America’s 50th state– Hawaii. What I observe is a place of culture that becomes shared with the tourist industry. It’s not about how far you hike or how much time you spend sitting on the beach. It’s about capturing the essence of the islands. It is about stopping the car, getting out, and experiencing. These are images that tell a story of the values and attitude of each destination.

WHERE WE WORK.

“What is the point of working when one could just surf

huge waves? I cannot surf, but I sure would love living on beach in a tent. I have always wondered how these people’s lives became this way. Every time I go to Hawai’i, I think to myself must be nice to be them. These locals seem to have no responsibilities. I always wonder how they afford food. I guess they just fish a lot or something. Are they considered homeless? I believe everyone chooses the life they live; maybe this is what they wanted. They seem to have fun, always surrounded by friends

and family. The kids are digging the sand, and the dogs run from the crashing waves. It is totally possible that these people do have another place, but day after day the same tents are set

up in the same spot. I am jealous of these people at times. At the same time, it kind of makes me sick to my stomach. Hawai’i is expensive, when gas is five dollars per gallon and food is marked up a few bucks compared to the continental states. When I think about movie to Hawai’i I remem-ber these people on the beach, doing the same thing day after day I ask myself, what is more important, living life to the full-est or waking up worrying about money? What does living to the fullest even mean? I just hope the people on the beach are living life to their fullest.

What is more important, living life to the fullest or waking up worrying about money?

Everyone sees things differently. If this is true, then why is there pressure to see things the same? Define Landscape, just try. What the hell is a landscape? Who decides? I’m sick of hearing about cliché, and kitsch. What does that even mean? Isn’t not trying to be cliché being cliché? These deep thinkers turn into hipster motherfuckers. What is a hipster? I want to photograph at sunset. I am in Hawaii for heaven sake. I like palm trees. Why do I feel pressure to turn my photography into something? Am I looking for approval from others? I think I want the approval of others, but I need the approval from myself. I love sunsets. It

is not my fault the best light is during the hours when the sky changes to shades of pink and purple. I like pink and purple. You don’t like Ansel Adams, good for you. I do. You don’t think he photographed the truth about his surroundings. Sorry he left out the trash can sitting next El Captain. You can go photograph it if you want. Let me know how much it sells for. People say there is no nature left to be discovered. You clearly aren’t looking. I am in Hawaii. Are you upset that there is access to beautiful places? Thank goodness there is access. I don’t enjoy tourists, but at least people are getting the fuck outside.
