COAAA Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging
3776 S. High St., 43207 614-645-7250
Don’t go it alone! Support is out there!
When someone in your family suffers from Alzheimer Disease or other related disorders, all of you often face
immense challenges. Accurate and timely information is important. Alzheimer's disease is the most common
form of dementia. Dementia is a general term for loss of memory and other intellectual abilities serious enough
to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of all cases of dementia. There are
other causes of dementia and a complete medical work up is needed if you are concerned about changes in
yourself or someone else. There are some cases where symptoms of dementia can be reversed, such as urinary
tract infections. A doctor, often a neurologist, can assess presence of dementia, its probable cause, and determine
appropriate treatment.
While the greatest known risk factor for Alzheimer Disease is increasing age, Alzheimer's is not just a disease of
old age. Up to 5 percent of people with the disease have early onset Alzheimer's which often appears when
someone is in their 40s or 50s. Alzheimer's is a progressive disease, meaning the symptoms gradually worsen
over a number of years. Although current Alzheimer's treatments cannot stop the disease from progressing, they
can temporarily slow the worsening of symptoms and improve a person’s quality of life. Today, there is a
worldwide effort under way to find better ways to treat all causes of dementia, delay onset, and prevent these
disorders from causing brain failure.
In Central Ohio we are fortunate to have a Central Ohio Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. A wealth of
information and support is available through the Association. In 2017 The Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging
(COAAA) is working with the Alzheimer’s Association and starting a new day-time support group for caregivers.
The group will meet the second Tuesday of each month at the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging, 3776 South
High St. from 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Support groups are a safe place for caregivers, family and friends of persons
with dementia to develop a support system. Participants can exchange practical information, talk about coping
strategies, share feelings, needs and concerns and learn about community resources. If you or someone you know
might benefit from this type of support, we invite you to join us. Contact: Paula Taliaferro with COAAA at 614-
645-7250 or Katie Gabriel with the Alzheimer’s Association at614-457-6003 extension 129 to learn more.

GREGG’S HEALTH CORNER:
A Note About Breakfast-According to ‘Living a
Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions’, Breakfast is
just that: breaking the fast. It refuels your body after
going without eating for many hours and helps you
resist the urge to eat extra snacks or overeat the rest of
the day. You may not want to eat breakfast, not only
because you don’t have the time or aren’t hungry but
because you don’t like the usual breakfast foods.
There are no set rules about what you should eat in
the morning. Breakfast can be anything: fruit, beans,
broccoli, even leftovers. The important thing is to
kick-start your body each day by refueling it.
“Breakfast for Lunch”
