The Offi cial Florida State Bird List has 514 bird species. To view this list of native and established nonnative birds go to records at www.fosbirds.org. According to the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail website there are “at least 196 non-native bird species that have been released in

Florida, 13 of which are considered established or naturalized with breeding (self-sustain-ing) populations in the wild.”

To help document the locations of non-native bird species go to the FOS website or to the Early Detec-tion and Distribution Mapping System (ED-

DMAPS) website at www.eddmaps.org.One nonnative species, the Pin-tailed Why-

dah, was fi rst reported in Florida in the 1980’s. They have been observed in several counties re-cently including Hendry County, but they haven’t been reported breeding in the wild. “Whydah” is the name of a town in Nigeria where this small fi nch is commonly found.

They are also called “Widow Birds” due to the adult male’s long black tail extension that can be twice its body length during breeding season. These birds are commonly found throughout tropical Africa and are present in Puerto Rico.

Adult birds have brown eyes, a bright red beak and black legs. The adult breeding male is glossy

black above with a white underside. Its lower back and sides of its head are white and it has a white stripe across the wings.

The adult female and non-breeding male has streaked brown upperparts, whitish underparts and a black face pattern. Juveniles look like the female, but have duller plumage and grayish bill.

The Pin-tailed Whydah’s calls can be a series of high-pitched, short squeaky notes or a sharp “chip chip chip.” They live in forests, gardens, parks and farmland where they forage on the ground for seeds and insects.

This nonnative bird does not build a nest. The female lays her eggs in another bird’s nest, but does not destroy the “host” bird’s eggs. The Pin-tailed Whydah hatchlings learn the calls and pat-terns of the foster parents.

You may have heard the term COPD before -- either in a radio or television commercial. COPD, short for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a serious lung disease that over time makes it hard to breathe.

Also known as emphysema or chronic bron-chitis, it is the third leading cause of death in the United States, but as many as 12 million Ameri-cans don’t even know they have it.

Unfortunately, symptoms are often shrugged off as a normal part of getting older or a conse-quence of being out of shape. And during cold and fl u season, COPD symptoms can also be mistaken for that cold or cough that just won’t go away.

But COPD can be a dangerous health haz-ard. If left untreated, it can have debilitating ef-fects on everyday activities. Affecting one in fi ve adults in the U.S. over the age of 45 and an es-timated 24 million Americans, as many as half remain undiagnosed.

In people who have COPD, the airway tubes that carry air in and out of your lungs are par-tially blocked, making it hard to breathe. The disease develops slowly and usually worsens over time. So don’t ignore the fi rst signs of COPD,

which include a chronic cough, hacking, wheez-ing and shortness of breath.

COPD occurs most often in people age 40 and over with a history of smoking, affecting

both current and former smokers. However, as many as one out of six people with COPD have never smoked.

Other risk factors include long-term exposure

to second hand smoke, certain chemicals, and dust or fumes in the workplace. In some people, COPD can be caused by a genetic condition known as alpha-1 antitrypsin, or AAT, defi ciency.

“While there is no cure for COPD -- early di-agnosis and treatment can help people with the disease improve their symptoms and get back to the things they love doing,” said James P. Kiley, PhD. Director, Division of Lung Diseases, at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health.

“As we head into the colder months, take the fi rst step to breathing better. Learn more about COPD and schedule an appointment to talk with your doctor or health care provider about your lungs.”

COPD can usually be diagnosed by a doctor or health care provider during a regular offi ce visit with a simple, non-invasive breathing test called spirometry.

If you or a loved one experiences any of the symptoms of COPD, take some time to learn more about it. Visit http://COPD.nhlbi.nih.gov for more information. With proper diagnosis

and treatment, people with COPD can live longer and improve their quality of life.

Florida tomato farmers may increase their yields by adding sulfur to their soil before plant-ing, according to a University of Florida study published in the current issue of the journal HortTechnology.

Adding 25 pounds of elemental sulfur per acre boosted yields by 1.7 tons per acre in the study, said Bielinski Santos, an associate profes-sor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and part of the research team respon-sible for the paper.

Sulfur is an important major nutrient and one of the ways it reaches agricultural fi elds is via atmospheric deposition. However, in recent years the amount of sulfur in the atmosphere has declined, due to tougher clean-air standards. So some farmland may not have the same sulfur content it once did.

“Growers should be aware that sulfur-related defi ciencies are now more common than a few years ago in vegetables and small fruit crops,” said Santos, who is based at UF’s Gulf Coast Re-search and Education Center in Balm.

There are no fi eld tests available for soil sulfur content, Santos said. So he recommends adding a sulfur amendment to soil once each year.

In the study, scientists grew tomatoes on sandy soil at the Balm center. Treatments were set up using sulfur amendments ranging from 25 pounds to 200 pounds per acre. The results showed that soil amended with 25 pounds per acre yielded 1.7 tons more marketable fruit per acre, compared to a control plot with no sulfur amendment.

Adding more sulfur had little additional ben-efi t, Santos said. The 25 pounds per acre falls within UF/IFAS recommendations for Florida vegetable production.

Santos said that possible sulfur sources include gypsum, elemental sulfur and sulfate-based fertilizer.

He added that a UF/IFAS research team has conducted similar experiments with strawber-ries and found similar results. That study will be published in the coming months.

From: Phillip L. Pelletier, Hendry County Property Appraiser

To: United States Sugar Corporation and Southern Gardens Citrus Products Employees, Growers & VendorsSubject: Memo dated October 8, 2012

I sincerely apologize to you and your families for the pressures you are feeling this election year. As Americans, it is our duty and responsibility to vote. We ought to vote for political leaders who best represent our own values, not because they be-long to a certain political party or because they align themselves with big business.

To: All Hendry County Taxpayers

Am I required to hold a broker or appraiser’s license to be your Property Ap-praiser? NO. As your Property Appraiser, I network with local real estate profession-als to stay informed on the current market trends and issues.

Do I have the education and training necessary to make fair and equitable prop-erty assessments? YES. I worked as a contractor in Hendry County for about 13 years before going to work for the Hendry County Property Appraiser. I was there for six years before transferring to the newly formed Hendry-LaBelle Recreation Department as Director, Secretary and Chief Financial Officer. I prepared an an-nual budget, managed personnel and acted as general contractor on all new proj-ects and project manager for new parks and facilities built through grant funding thereby remaining knowledgeable in the area of current costs. While working for the Property Appraiser, I earned the designation of Certified Florida Evaluator through the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO) by the success-ful completion of Fundamentals of Real Property Appraisal, Income Approach to Valuation, Mass Appraisal of Residential Property, and Fundamentals of Mapping. In the position of Administrative Assistant, I trained and supervised field apprais-ers in residential, commercial and agricultural areas. Since taking office, I have attended Dept. of Revenue Continuing Education Classes and Property Appraisers Association of Florida (PAAF) conferences, thereby keeping updated on legislative changes and current events.

My opponent knows that my office does not set taxes, strictly values. Below is a graph that shows my own home value, the average of all Hendry County homes, and my opponent’s value since my election in 2008. My home decreased 44%, the aver-age single family home decreased 48%, and my opponent’s home decreased 55%.

God Bless you and your family, and our great County.Psalm 35

The “Big O Hike” comes of age on Nov. 17. This will be the start of the 21st annual hike around Lake Okeechobee on the Herbert Hoover Dike, 35 feet above the surrounding countryside.

Hikers assemble at the Pahokee Marina ready to take the fi rst step at 8 a.m., heading north for a ten day, 110 mile trek. But it’s not as diffi cult as it seems.

In all actuality the hike is a series of one day hikes and participants can join or leave the other hikers at any trail head around Lake Okeechobee. Popular hikes are the fi rst day, a 3.5-mile “Wimp Walk” from Pahokee to Canal Point or the full day 12 mile walk to Port Mayaca. Hikers are shuttled back to the day’s starting point.

There is no charge for the hike, and anyone is

welcome to join the Loxahatchee Chapter of the Florida Trail Association in this, what is believed to be the longest running long distance hike in the United States.

In recent years, participants completing the entire hike have ranged in age from 9 to 92 years old. Anyone in reasonably good health is wel-come to join us in enjoying the outdoors and making new friends.

Campgrounds or motels and meals for those requiring them are at the hiker’s expense. Of spe-cial interest is Thanksgiving Dinner at the historic Clewiston Inn.

For more information, please contact Paul Cummings at [email protected] or 561-963-9906.

After examining an eye found on a south Florida beach this week, researchers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commis-sion (FWC) believe the specimen came from a swordfi sh. Genetic testing will be done to con-fi rm the identifi cation.

“Experts on site and remotely have viewed and analyzed the eye, and based on its color, size and structure, along with the presence of bone around it, we believe the eye came from a swordfi sh,” said Joan Herrera, curator of col-lections at the FWC’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg.

“Based on straight-line cuts visible around the eye, we believe it was removed by a fi sher-man and discarded.”

The approximately softball-size eye was recovered by a citizen in Pompano Beach on Wednesday. FWC staff received the eye later that day. Swordfi sh are commonly fi shed in the Florida Straits offshore of south Florida at this time of year.

A highly migratory fi sh, swordfi sh can be found from the surface to as deep as 2,000 feet. Swordfi sh in the Atlantic can reach a maximum size of over 1,100 pounds, according to the Na-

tional Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Swordfi sh feed on a wide variety of fi sh and in-vertebrates.

For more information on swordfi sh, includ-ing fi shing regulations, visit MyFWC.com.

The weather may be getting cooler, but that doesn’t mean people who are impacted by aller-gens are in the clear. From dust and dander to seasonal pollen, millions of people will sneeze, wheeze and cough their way through the months ahead.

The experts at Sun Products, makers of Snug-gle, all and Wisk laundry products, offer these steps to help make your home a safer haven from that which affl icts you.

Bust DustAllergens are hiding all over the home. Regu-

lar dusting and vacuuming will eliminate much of the problem. Just be sure to clean your vacu-um fi lter often.

And don’t overlook fabrics in your home like upholstered chairs and drapes, as dust, mites

and other allergens can collect here easily. Don’t suffer while cleaning. Use a mask to avoid com-ing into contact with the allergens you’re trying to eliminate.

Wash SafelyThe irony of keeping your home spic and span

for the sake of allergy management is that many cleaning supplies can aggravate the problem.

Ammonia, for example, can be quite harsh on the eyes and nose. Using a hypoallergenic, fragrance-free, all-purpose cleaner will make scrubbing the bathroom and kitchen a much more pleasant experience.

Likewise, bedding and clothing are notorious for collecting and trapping common allergens. According to a study by Grana, an international science journal, a large t-shirt can trap up to 7

million pollen grains on a peak pollen day. Remove everyday allergens trapped in your

garments and bedding with a fragrance free de-tergent designed for sensitive skin.

For example, all free clear detergent, which is the number one detergent brand recommended by dermatologists and allergists for sensitive skin, will eliminate 99 percent of tree and grass pollen, and ragweed pollen, the number one fall aller-gen.

Free of potential irritants like dyes and per-fumes, it will also help bust pet dander and dust mite matter. More information can be found at www.all-laundry.com/freeclear.

Keep Allergens OutWhen you walk around outside your clothes

can collect and absorb allergens and irritants.

Shoes are magnets for grass, tree and ragweed pollen.

Leave your shoes on the porch, especially after walking through grass. Change out of your clothes when you get home, depositing them di-rectly into the hamper.

Stay VigilantYou can stay informed with pollen-level maps

and recent allergen news. Visit the all free clear Facebook page for allergy resources and man-agement tips.

Get a handle on your sniffl es and congestion this season by freeing your home of allergens.

This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.8 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.77/g..

Including the change in gas prices in Florida during the past week, prices yesterday were 28.8 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 9.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago.

The national average has decreased 9.0 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 29.6 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

“The national average has again seen a decrease in the last week, as California joins much of the rest of the United States in see-ing lower prices,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan.

“Even though there hasn’t been a massive decline in California retail prices, the fact that prices have stopped rising there has helped tip the national average lower. In the week ahead, we could continue to see declines as whole-sale prices fell lower late last week, meaning gas stations have additional room to drop their prices,” DeHaan said.

The grand open-ing for the Journey Stories Exhibit will be at 7 p.m. on Tues-day, Oct. 23. The event will include a presentation by Dr. Jessica Cattelino, Professor of Arche-ology at UCLA, and no stranger to this area.

She will be presenting on water in the Glades and its impact on people over the years. She resided in Clewiston for seven months this year interviewing locals and collecting infor-mation on this subject, which will be the sub-ject of a forthcoming book.

Journey Stories is a Smithsonian traveling exhibit that depicts the migration of Americans across our great land. Clewiston was one of only six communities in Florida selected to re-ceive this prestigious exhibit.

In addition to viewing the exhibit during our special speaker presentations over the next six weeks, the exhibit is available during normal Museum hours, which are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. Saturday and evening viewings for groups are available by reservation.

The public is invited to this free event and there will be plenty of time following the pre-sentation to tour the exhibit and to enjoy re-freshments.

The program is being made possible through a grant provided by the Florida Hu-manities Council and with technical assistance from the Smithsonian Institution.

For more information, please contact the Museum at 863-983-2870 or email [email protected].

Complete information on the upcoming Journey Stories speaker programs can be found at www.clewistonmuseum.org.

By Pat DobbinsThe “Memory Bus” is one of the Alzheim-

er Association’s initiatives. The Alzheimer’s Association sends the bus into neighbor-hoods to offer free checks. It is a mobile clin-ic, open to anyone who may be concerned about their memory or if they are concerned about the memory of a family member or friend. It is a simple test and takes a few min-utes. The idea is to detect the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s. It is not only for seniors but for people of all ages.

The memory bus will be available on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Glades County Health Department, 1021 Health Park Drive, Moore Haven, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association,

1 in 14 people over the age of 65 has some form of dementia. Early diagnosis, educa-tion and care for people with dementia are strategic priorities for improving a person’s health and wellbeing. Memory problems can be common as people get older. Tired-ness, stress, depression and certain medica-tions can all affect memory. The important thing is for people to seek help if they have any concerns about memory loss. This event will allow people to talk in confi dence with an expert. For more information, the nation-al number is 1-800-272-3900 for Alzheimer’s Association.

Terrier Football was back in action Friday, Oct. 5, as they traveled to Bradenton to face with St. Stephen’s for its fi rst day game.

The Terrier defense was able to shut out the Falcons in all phases of the game limiting the Falcons to 91 total yards of offense and forcing four turnover (two interceptions, two fumbles), and scoring three times on defense off of a Markies Hallback and Ricky Curry Scoop and scores and a Daruis Co-hen 65-yard Interception return for a touch-down.

When your defense can score 18 points of their own you got to like that as Coaches. Our overall team play on the defense side of the ball has improved greatly from week one to now. With that been said we still have to continue to improve and have the DESIRE that is needed to play great TERRIER FOOT-BALL on both sides of the ball.

Set up with good fi eld position all day,

the Terrier offense was balanced putting up 250 yards rushing and passing for 91 yards. Bronson Bass was 5-7 with two touchdown passes one with his longest being a 57 yarder to JaVontie Broughton and a 12-yard pass to Akku Hallback. The Terriers also add three rushing touchdowns. Markies Hallback had two rushing with his longest being 45 yards and Daruis Cohen had one. The Terrier lead-ing was Barrion Cohens with 84 yards.

Quote for the St. Stephen’s Head Coach—it was a different Moore Haven team than the Falcons faced last year.

Saint Stephen’s head coach Tod Cren-eti said, ”They are a much more disciplined team than they were a year ago.”

Creneti also said. “They’re clicking. They are executing well, they’re working well as a team.”

Once again we would like to thank you Terrier Fans for all support and following us on the Road.

Publix, Harry Chapin Food Bank & United Way partner to help local school children

Publix Super Markets, Harry Chapin Food Bank and the United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades worked together to bring 11 pallets of school supplies to the students of Hendry and Glades Counties.

Just before school started, Publix Super Markets conducted the annual drive for “School Tools for Cool Kids,” supplies to help students enter the school year with the tools they need to be successful. The school supplies many of us take for granted — pa-per, pencils, pens, crayons, rulers — are the very tools that can make a difference in the education of a child.

The bags of school supplies collected by Publix were delivered to and stored at the Harry Chapin Food Bank warehouse in Fort Myers. United Way and Publix volunteers sorted the supplies into large bins that were then delivered by Harry Chapin trucks to the Hendry County Schools warehouse, the Glades County School District offi ce, Hendry-Glades Behavioral Health Center, and the St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.

Glades County School District Director of

TALLAHASSEE—In August, Secretary of State Ken Detzner announced the addition of General Thomas Sidney Jesup’s diary, from the Second Seminole War, to the Flor-ida Memory website. The diary follows the day-to-day activities of General Jesup from October 1836, when he fi rst arrived in Flor-ida, to May 1837. General Jesup discusses troop movements, the challenges of supply, battles and negotiations to remove the Semi-noles from Florida.

“General Jesup’s diary is an invaluable re-source for historians of Native American His-tory, as well as our state and country’s his-tory,” said Secretary Detzner. “His thoughts and observations offer a unique insight into one of the most dramatic and controversial confl icts in U.S. history.”

General Jesup was one of the longest serving offi cers in U.S. military history and the longest serving Quartermaster General of the U.S. Army. General Jesup’s fate and that of the Seminoles became entwined in October 1836, when he arrived in Florida to take command of U.S. forces in the territory. Beginning in December, when he formally assumed command, General Jesup spent a year and a half trying to defeat the Seminoles, who resisted the U.S. campaign to take their land and remove them to the West.

Some of the most important events of the Second Seminole War, which lasted from 1835 to 1842, occurred during the time General Jesup was in command, including

the capture of Osceola, the Battle of Lake Okeechobee, the pursuit of Black Seminoles (escaped slaves who fought alongside the Seminoles), and a dramatic increase in the number of U.S. troops deployed in Florida. General Jesup ended his role in the con-troversial confl ict in May 1838, when he re-turned to Washington, D.C. and resumed his position as Quartermaster General.

Visit the Florida Memory website, www.FloridaMemory.com, to learn more about General Thomas Sidney Jesup and the Sec-ond Seminole War. General Jesup’s diary can be found at http://www.fl oridamemory.com/collections/jesup/.

Arrest Report

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conserva-tion Commission (FWC) is proud to an-nounce that its year-old Black Bass Manage-ment Plan is producing remarkable results.

Implementation of the plan last summer was expected to create signifi cant ecologi-cal, economic and social benefi ts for Florida. More than 7,500 anglers provided input, as did a technical assistance group represent-ing fi shing-related businesses, university ex-perts, professional anglers, outdoor media and fi shing guides.

The goal of the plan is to ensure Florida is the Black Bass Fishing Capital of the World by:

1. Ensuring healthy lakes and rivers to benefi t many species of fi sh and wildlife, as well as trophy bass fi sheries.

2. Strengthening local economies by doc-umenting and increasing economic benefi ts derived from bass fi shing, which already provides more than 14 million days of qual-ity outdoor recreation for bass anglers and generates an economic impact of $1.25 bil-lion.

3. Attracting events such as national pro-fessional bass fi shing tournaments, which have huge economic impacts, to smaller towns and cities as a result of Florida’s en-hanced reputation.

So, how much progress was made to fulfi ll the goals of the BBMP during the fi rst year? Here is a partial list of accomplish-ments. (Also available at MyFWC.com/Fish-ing; click the Black Bass Management Plan banner, then look for “First-Year Updates.”)

Bass genetics – The FWC stopped state-owned hatcheries from stocking or relocat-ing bass outside their native range. Genetic testing will help ensure pure Florida popula-tions will be maintained.

Hydrilla management – The FWC Inva-sive Plant Management Section implement-ed an agency position statement to guide

the agency in managing hydrilla using a risk-based approach that now incorporates pub-lic input into hydrilla management plans.

Bass tournaments – Tournament permits annually allow clubs and organizations to possess bass outside legal size limits with the condition that all bass (even those that could normally be harvested) must be re-leased. The FWC is strengthening partner-ships with bass fi shing organizations and local communities to encourage large tour-naments to come to Florida and to enhance facilities.

Lake Okeechobee – Another objective was to work cooperatively with other agen-cies to emphasize recreational fi sheries. An example is Lake Okeechobee, where the cooperative efforts of local citizens groups, the South Florida Water Management Dis-trict, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the FWC got the Water Regulation Schedule changed to benefi t lake ecology. Outstand-ing catch rates for bass and crappie are be-ing reported.

Fisheries regulations – FWC biologists are seeking to use the least restrictive regula-tions possible to protect trophy bass, while maintaining a statewide bass fi shery that provides diverse angling opportunities, in-cluding controlled harvest and high angler satisfaction. University of Florida human di-mensions experts are working to enhance the public input process.

Cheering for the home teamMoore Haven High School Terriers Cheerleaders had plenty to cheer about in the Oct. 12 football game.

By Mike MinikwuSpecial to the Glades Democrat

The Terriers football team was back in black last Friday night in Joe Brown stadium as they took on Community School of Na-ples.

Coming off of their fi rst shut out, the Ter-rier defense picked up and continue to play at a high level as the defense was able to shut out the Seahawks.

The Terriers held the Seahawks to just 50 yards rushing while forcing four turnovers (three interceptions, one fumble) and score off a Daruis Cohen force fumble scoop and score.

Any time your defense can score points and create turnover on defense you’ve got to like that as fans, players and coaches.

Set up with good fi eld position the Terrier offense was balanced putting up a total of 435 yards of offense with 150 of that coming through the air.

To try to list off those players who ex-celled in this game would not do justice to the complete team effort last Friday night.

It was the most complete game we have played as TEAM. Everyone did their part to play to the best of their abilities and stayed together.

“Their speed and athleticism is always a nightmare for everyone they play,” Commu-nity School coach Damon Jones said. “We talked all week about limiting their big plays,

but we just didn’t do that tonight. Give them

credit. Their coaches do a great job with

them.”

Terrier Nation: Black out the stands on Friday night!

Your Terriers will be back in action this

Friday, Oct. 19, against Rival St. John New-

mann.

I’m asking everyone who understands

THE PROCESS OF BUILDING A PROGRAM

to wear a black shirt to this Friday night’s

contest as we try to “black out the stands” in

your support of the Terriers.

This game is going to come down to us

as community, school, parents, player,s and

coaches:

• Keeping clear eyes;

• Knowing that something going to go

wrong at some point but not losing focus on

the process and staying positive (full hearts);

and,

•Staying commented to the process, do-

ing your best in a positive way. If we can do

that the we can’t lose.

See you Friday night and remember to

wear BLACK!

CLEAR EYES! FULL HEARTS! CAN’T

LOSE!
