OBJECTIVESSustainability of Earth System needs scientific, technical andexecutive initiatives, as it requires a judicious planning inimplementing various scientific decisions. Such initiativescan yield proper results only by involving common manas a responsible protector of the Earth System. As IndianGeophysical Union (IGU) is wedded to overall wellbeing ofLIFE on Earth and the Environment, it proposes to addressthis problem taking global, regional and local factors througha holistic scientific endeavour, involving the entire EarthSystem Scientists.

As the International Council for Science (ICSU) is spearheadinga three-step consultation processin cooperation with theInternational Social Sciences Council (ISSC)to engagethe scientific community to explore options and proposeimplementation steps for a holistic strategy on Earth systemresearch that will encourage scientific innovation and addresspolicy needs, IGU wishes to closely follow the initiatives madeby ICSU and ISSC, not only to gather relevant informationthrough 50thAnnual Convention of IGU but also provide theneeded information to the two international scientific bodiesto make international cooperation a successful Earth SystemScience Partnership. The earth system now operates welloutside the normal range of variability exhibited over the past500,000 years and human activity is generating changes overshort periods of time exceeding natural variabilityin somecases, alarmingly so and at rates that continue to accelerate. To cope with this challenge, the international research bodieshave called urgently for an ethical framework for globalstewardship and strategies for Earth System management. The ICSU proposes to mobilize the international global changescientific community to support sustainable development inthe context of global change, by carrying out apt research.

In doing so it seeks to work in close collaboration with theISSC and other partners. The pace and magnitude o f human-induced global change is currently beyond human controland is manifest in increasingly dangerous threats to humansocieties and human well-being. There is an urgent need forthe international scientific community to develop scientificand technological strategies to reduce our vulnerability tothreats and the geo-scientists are duly bound to facilitateprogress toward sustainable development goals.

The global change research community, which has playeda central role in researching and educating the functioningof the Earth system and the human impacts on that system, holds the promise to meet this need. Realizing that promiserequires a focus on new research priorities and on new ways ofdoing and using research to address needs at global, regional, national, and local scales. For this the Global Scientific bodieshave decided to: (a) identify broadly-accepted grand challengesin Earth system science for global sustainability; (b) identify

high priority research that must be carried out to address thosechallenges; and (c) mobilize scholars in the sciences (social, natural, health, engineering and Geosciences) and humanitiesto pursue innovative research in all relevant areas. The international scientific community has identified fiveGrand Challenges :1. Forecasting - Improve the usefulness of forecasts of future

environmental conditions and their consequences for people.2. Observing - Develop, enhance and integrate the

observation systems needed to manage global andregional environmental change.

    3. Confining - Determine how to anticipate, recognize, avoidand manage disruptive global environmental change.

    4. Responding - Determinewhat institutional, economic andbehavioural changescan enable effectivesteps toward globalsustainability.

    5. Innovating -

Encourage innovation(coupled withsound mechanismsfor evaluation)in developingtechnological, policy andsocial responses to achieveglobal sustainability.

IGU proposes to strengthen the international scientificco-operation, to ensure Sustainability of Earth System. It urges the Earth System Scientific Community of India inparticular and International Scientific community in generalto contribute to IGU`s initiative, by bringing in to focusspecific measures essential to achieve a tangible success.

IGU 50th Annual Convention meeting provides the rightplatform to address these problems and guide the IndianGeosciences community to focus on the most relevantproblems and respond effectively to the risks and challengesof global change.
