1. Get an EORI number

Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number

• To trade with an EU country you will need a UK EORI and EU EORI number

UK EORI2

• Starts with GB followed by 12 digits• 2

It allows you to:

• Trade goods into or out of the UK

• Submit declarations using software (or to give to your agent to make these

declarations on your behalf)

• Apply to be authorised for customs simplifications and procedures2

All UK VAT registered businesses have been automatically allocated a UK EORI

You may not receive a UK EORI number if:

• You already have one, because you’ve traded with countries outside of the EU

• You are not VAT registered

• You will only import or export goods with Ireland across the Northern Ireland

and Ireland border

1. Get an EORI number

EU EORI

• Procedures differ across EU Member States

• Accepting applications for authorisations and registration now

• EU EORI numbers will activate upon the UK leaving the EU

You will need an EU EORI if YOU are dealing with EU customs

Apply in the customs authority in the EU where you:

• First conduct trade or

• Request a customs decision from

You do not need to apply for an EU EORI number if:

• Your EU customer or importer deals with EU customs on your behalf and already has an EU EORI number.

• You will only import or export goods with Ireland across the Northern Ireland and Ireland border

2. Check your commodity code

• Use the UK Trade Tariff tool to find the commodity

codes for your goods (pre-EU Exit only)

• Using the wrong codes risks paying the wrong tariff,

costly delays at the border or even goods being

blocked into the EU

• Speak with HMRC for definitive advice

• Exporters should be aware that full EU tariffs will

apply on most goods imported into the EU following

no-deal

• The UK Government has concluded Continuity Agreements with:• Andean countries

• CARIFORUM trade bloc

• Central America

• Chile

• Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) trade bloc

• Faroe Islands

• Iceland and Norway

• Israel

• Liechtenstein

• Pacific states

• Palestinian Authority

• South Korea

• Switzerland

• Take effect when the UK leaves the EU

• Trade will take place under these terms and not WTO

• Allows trade to continue with minimal changes to tariffs and quotas

3. Know what certificates your

products need

Export Health Certificates (EHC)

o Required for all consignments of seafood to the EU

o Confirms the consignment complies with relevant

health legislation

o Must be applied for in advance of export

o Completed EHC must accompany the consignment

o Not required for direct landings from UK registered

fishing vessels to EU ports

o Block certification and ‘hub’ model approach can

provide flexibility for exporters

3. Know what certificates your

products need

Catch Certificate:

• Required to export most fish or fish products into the

EU

• Not required for aquaculture products, freshwater

products, oysters, mussels, clams, scallops, abalone,

fish sauce etc.

• Shows fish was caught legally

• Responsibility of the exporter to complete.

• To be completed at the point of export

• Register on Government Gateway- get practicing

Storage Document:

• Exports of fish sourced from another country and stored, but not processed in the UK

• No minimum storage time

• Copy of the catch certificate from the original consignment with the storage document

Processing Statement:

• Exports of fish sourced from another country that has been processed in the UK

• Include a copy of the catch certificate from the original consignment with the processing statement.

Health and Identification Marking

• Oval marks applied to seafood products to confirm

compliance with EU hygiene requirements.

• Exports to the EU:

• The official two-digit ISO Code ‘GB’ or

• The full country name in capital letters UNITED

In a ‘no deal’ scenario the revised marks must be used from the

date the UK ceases to be a member of the EU

4. Check your product labelling

Protected Geographical Indications:• UK will set up its own geographical indication (GI)

scheme to mirror existing EU schemes

• Producers of existing EU GIs may need to apply to the relevant UK scheme to secure UK GI status

• Defra to publish guidance on how to apply to the UK GIschemes in October.

• EU may not continue to protect UK GI products in a ‘no deal’

• Be prepared to re-apply to the European Commission

• … but legal situation suggests that UK GIs will remain protected

• Post EU-exit, UK PGIs wanting protection in the EU will need to apply as a third country

• area fished

• quantity of fish by species on board the vessel

• North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) Port State Control

form (PSC1 or PSC2)

Check with the NEAFC to find out how much notice you need to give.

Register for a NEAFC account NOW!

You will not need an Export Health Certificate.

• Check your point of entry into the EU

• Agree incoterms with EU trading partners

• List of approved establishments

• Make sure you have a UK and EU EORI number

• Check out commodity codes and WTO tariff rates for your goods

• Register on Government Gateway and familiarise yourself with the catch certificate forms

• Familiarise yourself with the EU Export Health Certificates
