Chapter 5

John and Mary (Carey) Scott Richard L. Kenyon

e-mail:[email protected] October 3, 2008

Introduction Mary Carey came to Jasper County Iowa from Ohio in the mid 1860’s and lived there the rest of her life. Thirteen years after her marriage to John Scott, he passed away, and Mary was left to support her family by herself. Daughter Ruby was 9 and Josie was 13 at the time. Mary was to spend 30 years as a widow. She was survived by two children and six grandchildren. Her daughter Josie Schmidt/Chinn and granddaughter Iris (Kenyon) Milligan are the subject of separate chapters.

Mary Carey’s youth Mary Carey was born May 7, 1862 in Belmont, Ohio, the daughter of William T. and Anne (Dawson) Carey, who are the subjects of a separate chapter. Her parents were pioneer residents of Jasper County, moving there from Ohio about 1854. However, they appear to have gone back to Ohio for a few years, and Mary was born there. By 1866, the family resided permanently in Jasper County, Iowa.

Marriage Mary married John Perry Scott on January 1, 1885, in Newton, Jasper County, Iowa. As a marriage gift, her father, William T. Carey, gave Mary an elegant table. It is now in the home of Mary’s great-great granddaughter Teresa Schweinebart.

John Scott was born in Graham, Missouri, on May 8, 1858. He was the son of David and Sophia (Torrance) Scott, who are the subjects of a separate chapter. David Scott was a cabinetmaker.

John Scott moved with his parents to Newton sometime between 1860 and 1864.

Children of John and Mary Scott John and Mary had two children:

(Mary) Josephine “Josie” Scott was born September 24, 1886, in Baxter, Iowa. She married Conrad Schmidt on May 3, 1905. They were divorced in March 1921. She married Ray Chinn in October 1929. Josie, her three children, and her husbands John Schmidt and Ray Chinn are the subject of a separate chapter. Ruby Fern Scott was born April 21, 1892 in Baxter Iowa. On November 29, 1911 she married Charles Emery Titus, a veterinarian, who was born December 31, 1866 in Marshalltown, Iowa. He was the son of Harrison Shaw and Catherine (Walsh) Titus. Ruby and Charles had 3 children:

Kenneth Scott Titus, born Rhodes, IA, Dec 5, 1916. Died January 13, 1995, in Amarillo, Texas.

Merle H. Scott Titus, born Melbourne, IA, Aug 16, 1918. Lived in Woodland Hills and later Encino, in the greater Los Angeles, California area.

Mary Catherine “Kay” Titus, born in Iowa about 1922. Lived in Cedar Falls Iowa. Married H. H. Rose.

Charles was sent to prison for theft. According to a family story related by Teresa Schweinebart:

He had worked on some hogs, about 50 head, and the farmer made the remark that they were going to a wedding that night, so he waited until they left and went in and took all 50 head, put them in a old barn that nobody used until he could sell them. The farmer alerted all the local sale barns and when he took them in to sell the law was waiting. Ruby kicked him out just as soon as she found out about it. He got 5 years, and I don't think she ever saw or heard from him again. Grandma Iris always said he would take anything that was not nailed down.

Charles died May 2, 1965 in Postville, Iowa. He is buried in Rhodes Iowa. Ruby worked for the Boyd-Nickell Funeral Home in Baxter for many years and also worked for the town veterinary on weekends. Ruby took care of her aunt Alice (Carey) Earley during her last years. After Alice died September 7, 1951, Ruby inherited Alice’s home. For the last several years of her life, Ruby lived with her daughter Kay Rose in Waterloo Iowa. Ruby died at age 79 on March 7, 1972 at Schoitz Memorial Hospital in Black Hawk County, Iowa, near Waterloo. She is buried in Restland Cemetery in Baxter Iowa.

Last years In the 1895 census Mary and her two young children were living with her brother Amos Carey. John was not present, and it is not clear why. John Scott died at age 40 on October 15, 1898, in Newton, Iowa. His death is somewhat of a mystery. There is no obituary or Jasper County death record. He should be buried with his wife in Newton Union Cemetery, but there is no stone and no record of burial there. However John and Mary’s family was included in a published 1923 genealogy, and John’s death date was given here.

After John’s death, Mary supported herself by working as a live-in housekeeper for Charles Hatch in Independence Township. In 1904, Mary inherited 80 acres of farmland from her father William T. Carey. It was located in Independence Township, Jasper County. She was recorded as a farmer in the 1910 census. She was still on the farm in 1920. For about the last four years of her life, Mary lived in Reasnor, Jasper County. In the 1930 census, she was working as a live-in housekeeper for J. B. Tool. When her health failed, she left Reasnor to live with her granddaughter Iris Milligan in Baxter. About six weeks later, Mary died at age 68, on February 11, 1931.

Mary’s farm has remained in the family to the present day, as described in the chapter on Loren and Iris Milligan.

Mary Scott is buried in Newton Union Cemetery in the Scott plot, as are both parents of John Scott, and John’s sister Edna.

Acknowledgements: This document would not have been possible without the help of Teresa Schweinebart of Baxter, Iowa. Teresa has collected a great deal of information from family sources, and knows or knew personally many of the relatives and descendants.

Gary Scott of Dixon, California, called my attention to the very important 1923 genealogy by Jared Sidney Torrance, which provided a treasure chest of information, including the long-sought date of death of John Scott. He also provided copies of research done at his request by Pat Beckham of the Jasper County, Iowa, Genealogical Society. Roni Welch of Sanger, California provided the sources for Mary’s birth date and other information. Nancy Waterhouse of Salt Lake City obtained copies of documents for me from the LDS Family History Library. Helen Whannel obtained obituaries for me from the Iowa State Historical Society.

Special thanks to Lois J. Hinshaw for taking the gravestone photos for me.
