Dry skin brushing is an amazing natural health technique that can give tremendous health benefits. It's quick and easy to do and - after you've bought a $10-ish brush - completely free of charge. Most of the articles you can read online say that we should all be brushing in the morning, before a shower. For those of us who have busy mornings, demanding families, pestering pets, or who are just night owls, brushing in the morning is just another chore and it's unlikely to happen. Rather than forget it altogether, we can simply decide to brush at other times of day. Anytime you choose is a good time, for various reasons. The reason why people say brushing in the morning is a good idea is that it can zip up the circulation, give a boost of energy, and get the day started well. If you are new to dry skin brushing, you will dislodge old, dead skin cells and a shower after brushing will get rid of these. Once you have brushed a few times, though, you will have dislodged the old, dead skin cells and you don't need to shower immediately after brushing. You can brush anytime and shower/bathe whenever is convenient. If you brush vigorously at night, then you could find it a little too stimulating - it could interfere with sleep. However, you can adjust your brushing routine and it will help with sleep. Here's how: > Lower the lighting and turn off electrical devices. > Use long, slow, leisurely brush strokes. > Do some deep, relaxing breathing while brushing, and for a few minutes afterwards. > Put a drop of lavender or marjoram essential oil into a little vegetable oil and smoothe it over your chest and neck after brushing. The brushing will soothe rather than stimulate your central nervous system. The combination of the relaxing oils and the breathing will get you into a relaxed state of mind and body which should send you into a wonderful, restorative sleep. You can also brush at other times of day: > After work, to help you unwind for the evening. It's a great habit to start. Brush after changing out of your work clothes, before you get into your comfies. > Before going out on the town. Use brisk brush strokes and brush each part of your body several times. This will give you a thorough exfoliation and healthy glow. > Before applying self-tan. Again, use brisk brush strokes and be sure to cover every inch of your body, several times. This exfoliation will make the false tan go on smoothly and without streaking. Dry skin brushing has numerous benefits and it's a shame to avoid it just because you're not a morning person!
