5 Reasons to Become a Leader
Before becoming a leader we need to ask ourselves; Why Become a Leader? After all it takes a lot of time and effort to become a leader, so before expending
that time and effort perhaps we should establish what benefit there will be in becoming a leader. In this post we look at 5 reasons to become a leader
For me I’ve been a leader for a long time, starting in school when I was a vice –captain of a rugby team,
that’s 40 years ago. I’ve had many leadership positions some of are: been a leader in industry
employing some 300 people, and small businesses. As a non-profit leader in the church as lay leader
and churchwarden. The most rewarding leadership role I have had is being dad of 3 awesome children
A mentor of mine, Jim Rohn said. “Become a millionaire for the person that you become” and that
quote provides two reasons to become a leader.
1. To have more material things
2. To grow personally, to be more.
To have more, we have to be more. That is to be perceived as the go to person for a particular thing, whether that is knowledge or product. That we have more or better knowledge or product, that will fulfil a
particular need or desire better than other solutions.
If we look back through history leaders that inspire me, Jesus, Churchill, Einstein, Bill Gates, Richard Branson. I would suggest that none of them did what they did for the money.
3. Help people
They did what they did to help, inspire or solve a problem.
4. Recognition
Perhaps we all desire recognition, babies cry for recognition and men die for it. But if recognition
comes quickly before we have had a chance to grow and feel worthy of that recognition the very thing
that we crave can often destroy as many ‘stars’ have found out.
5. Need
Often we become leaders because we know that we’re the only one who can do a task. Sometimes becoming a leader is ‘foisted upon us’ All parents
are leaders. As their children look to them as what and how to do things. Other times we step into the
role as we recognise a need and no-one else is willing or perhaps able.
So there we have 5 reasons to become a leader.
Having come off a 14 month holiday in the Philippines I am now stepping up my leadership, currently in my network business I’m at a position that 14 month holiday
was possible, but now after that sabbatical I’m starting on the journey to the top. And this whole blog will tell of my journey. I hope you will share and enjoy as I will, (most of the time) So subscribe to the RSS feed to get each post. Or perhaps share ?
Live in the moment it’s a present
