What no t to do at IIT!isa 2004 novel written by Chetan Bhagat,an alumnus of Indian Institute ofTechnology (IIT) Delhi and Indian Institute of

Management (IIM) Ahmedabad. This was his debut novel.

It is one of the highest selling English novel publishedin India

This novel was entirely typed by Bhagat on MicrosoftWord in the font- Garamondwhich he stated in thenovel itself. This book has received an overallpositive review and is regarded as a "classic"

WHERE IS SETUP OF NOVEL?

The novel is set in the Indian Institute of

Technology, Delhi, in the period 1991 to

1995.

It is about the adventures of

three mechanical engineering mechanical

engineering students (and friends), Hari

Kumar (the narrator), Ryan Oberoi, and AlokGupta, who fail to cope with the grading

system of the IITs.

NATURES OF THREE ENGG.STUDENTS

. Ryan is a bit smart and outspoken, whereasAlok and Hari are mildly cry babies.

The three hostel mates - Alok, Hari and Ryanget off to a bad start in IIT - they screw up thefirst class quiz.

And while they try to make amends, things onlyget worse. It takes them a while to realize: If youtry and screw with the IIT system, it comes back

to double screw you. They have a five-point-something GPA out of

ten, ranking near the bottom of their classes.

NOVEL DEALS WITH..

It deals with the lives of the three friends whoseelation on making it to one of the bestengineering colleges in India is quickly deflatedby the rigor and monotony of academic work.

Most of the book deals with the numerousattempts by the trio to cope with and/or beat thesystem as well as Hari's fling with Neha who justhappens to be the daughter of Prof. Cherian,

the domineering head of the MechanicalEngineering Department. Their most importantattempt was "C2D" (Cooperate to Dominate).

TONE OF NOVEL AND TEACHING IN IITS

While the tone of the novel is humorous, it takessome dark turns every now and then, especially whenit comes to the families of the protagonists.

Most of the action, however, takes place inside thecampus as the boys, led by the ever creative Ryan,frequently lamenting how the internationally laudedIIT system has stifled their creativity by forcing themto value grades more than anything else.

Uninspiring teaching and numerous assignments addto their woes, though the boys do find a sympathizerin Prof. Veera, the new fluid mechanics professor.

MICE THEORY

Ryan comes up with the Mice Theory to

explain the problems in the IITs: This IIT

system is nothing but a mice race.

CONCLUSION BY RYAN

Ryan concludes that the IIT system is unfairbecause It:

1. suppresses talent and individual spirit.

2. extracts the best years of ones life fromthe countrys brightest minds.

REAL DRAMA

It is in the last part, that the book really

comes alive. The traumatic final year which

includes disciplinary action against the

heroes of the book, Ryan, Hari and Alok fortrying to steal an examination paper.

There is an attempted suicide by Alok.

CONVOCATION ADDRESS

Finally, the time has come to graduate. In a

dream sequence, one professor accepts the

limitations of the grading system while

making his convocation address.

CONCLUSION

It is great to get into IIT, but it is not the end

of the world if you don't. The one who gets into IIT should be proud to

have the IIT tag, but never ever judge

anyone who is not from this institute - thatalone can define the greatness of this

institute.
