Welcome to the ~ick off of the 1980-1981 DI season with a veri timely ·column. Some of the best news to foriegn DX'ers in years is the recent rash of verifications from CollllllWlist Cuba. Verifying Ace Rick Carr of Texas sends along the follow~ng signers and addresses for those who want to add Cuba to their veri folders:

For:Radio Rebelde, Calle 0 No. 216 (Apto. 3540) Habana v/s is Jorge Luis Mis Zabala, Dpto. Divulgacion

Stations that have verified for Rick are CMAN-550, CMHI-570,CMW-590,CMKV-600 all with !CRT QSL Card. With a prepared card and letter veries were received from CMKF-580,ClllN-720, and CMJN-780.

iadio Liberacion, Calle 23 No.258 entre Ly M, Habana (apto. 6277, Habana 6) v/s Ricardo Parets, J 1de Divulgacion

Stations that have verified for this network are CMHQ-630,CMJL-740,CMJV-900 with R. Liberacion QSL and letter. CMQ-640 with !CRT QSL and letter.

Rick's other Cuban veries include ; R. Cadena liabana-1160 v/pp, R. Reloj National on 1180,1210,and 1560 all v/pp and R. 26 CMGA with a personal letter v/ s Ezequiel Rivero Poado. Rick comments; "All cards and letters with the exception of radio 26 were officially stamped with the ICRT/R. Rebelde, !CRT/ Radio Liberacio, etc. seal. Ten or eleven were veried since the first of the year. I don't believe any of the veries took less than ninety days and a few took 160 days to get here. some calls and frequencies may have changed since I first heard them.• Thanks to Rick Carr for passing on this info.

Looking to a few problems ; our musings editor could use any verification info on WIBG-1520. Dave Schimdt could use signers on CJNR-730, WLBE-790, WITH-1230,WASR-1420, and WPCE-1400. Remember to check the v/s colW!lll closely as the signers to a few of these and more will be found in this issue.

Now a little advise on geoting verifications from the CE at WCHE-1520.• I have seen enough reports, after 1 years in radio and the last ~ years as a CE, some that are good and some that sort of make y~u sick. Proaably the biggest and most important item for one to remember when sending out a reception report is to be neat. Keep your letter in a business-like form, don't be sloppy. I'm a believer that the neater the letter, the better the chance to get a reply. Stay al1F7 from using Ham lingo, very few people that may anwser reception reports are in ham radio. Stay away from SINPO codes, Try to get as much detail as possible, list itmes heard by time, If there was interference state that in the report also. Don)t make the report long winded, keep it to the point but don't make the letter look like something a machine ground out. Even though I used them for years, stay away from using report forms, it may take a little longer to type out a personal letter but it is worth the effort. Always send return postage with your reports. Every report I've sent since I started in the NRC has had return postage, even all my follow-ups, Out of over 1000 veries I've got, onl¥ a dozen are ppc•s•.

My thanks to Dave Schmidt our DXDD editor for his veri good advice. On with v/s Our contributors for this issue are

UNC01'VENTION11 L COllVENTION! GREG llOliTI - 1110 Fidler ~e f~Silver Spring , Maryland - 20910

I t wasn't long after I•d recovered from T1Ilf WC vacation when it was time to depart for Loui sville Ky. & the IHCA convention. TED F!Jo:ISCHAKER, naturally, was 1le convention host. He picked out a real f anc;• downtown hotel to impress us and showed us all the good places. to eat. The IRCA. hospitality suite was always a beehive of activity, with many DX/ programming bull ses s ions going on at once. I got to meet DXers frOlll all over, whether in IRCA or not, such as STEVE SCHAEFER, JI.II I.A.LUCE, ERNIE COOPER, RICH SEGAIAS, and a whole bunch of people from Ohio who made strange noises a lot. I also ran into people I'd met be-fore, like PAUL kOUNT and the wall-travelled GEvRGE GREENE. I also bot to meet BC•s Eld.\~"D CARLSON, who . 'll'lls in the middle of a cross-sect ional vacation, stopping at DX conventions and DXers • h0111es on the way. Good to have you in V:ashington for the few hours you 119re here, Erlandl I also had a discuss ion of the Fii table of al locations with ... ichiian• s PHIL !iOERlMA. Convention highli ghts included the WHAS/wAMZ tour, & the visit to Shelbyville, K',y. where we toured WCND-940. ate at the Colonel's Lady, and stopped by the Wl!AS-840 XR site. Much of the rest of the time was spent sittil!g in the Jacuzzi half the night, finding a nonexistant Frenchman at the Greyhound depot, having a fire drill in the hotel at 4145 on Sunday moniing and tuning all the receivers in stereo stores to 90.5 mHz. Ted ran a fine conva:ition. Now, he's deciding which one will be ill Louisville in 1982. It•s an every-other-year tradition, I understand. This convention was r eall;• just a Louisville conventior1, not strictly the IRCA convention. We had attendees from many clubs and regions, llhich i s a s it should be. The Fall season is on it s way, so 73'• and good DX to all.

JOE• 5 HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL - WITH MEMORIES

J w BRAl!NER _ R D. l _ Eox 15; - Punxsutawney, Pennsyvvania - 8/31/80 • • · J;JiCl-Summer greetings. Hot WX, a three-week stay in the hospital canbined to

make limited DX lately. July added only WXJCIY-126o on R3@ 3am, 7 / 20. Au gustI almost drew a blank. On 8/30 \'•GGO was hog ging 1'90 c; 8pm so wa stayed for the 8: 15 s/ off and sure enough much-wanted v:JET made it weakly briefly throu<;h l'IAKR. Then Sunday 8/31 'iii lOam the new Mon-roeville, Pa. call, WliUE, IDed on 151C. I had been checking this spot and getting WART at midday so possibly the station had been off the air. DX NE'I~ ~"29 was (to me at least) one of the most interesting in years, thanks to all who mo.de it so. BRIAN VERNOK and his Cana-dians. Those •phantom• calls were in a class by themselves. CKTB was a semi-local to me for years but like ERC I don't recall that beer logo. But I do remember CKG\'i's "Canadians Know Good Whiskey." Nestle's CKOW, "Canada's KOW" and all those Clffi calls fran liloncton to Vancouver, CPR calls and CKSll used only durine; services at St. k'ichaels. Ernie's imposing list of Brooklyn calls bring to mind i'1'F'i<V-14oO, logged as of ll/1/33 "'6pm. A report brought

a personal v/ l on WVFW lett erhead. A f /up explafring what was desired got another FVLwhich stated that the call heard was -,~\'IV and an explanation that ·;,F'/lV was used very briefly whilo the VFW untangled red tape to obtain WVFW (log,;ed on ll/15/33 _,, 7pm). The VN block had been reserved for government use. The VFW made the first breakthrough. I wonder how many DXers have l'/FV,V verified? Memories, memories! 73. (Not me, & I lived in Brooklyrl -EF-C )

ID!.VING A HH•H TIME TkYIN G FOh WLSDl

ROSS J.!URPHY - 1358 Lindbergh Avenue - Roslyn, Pennsylvenia - 19001 I see the big thing iri the se 1;use sessions is exposing the "coded messaa.i;e" be-

hind a station•s call. Speaking of call lett ers , one station with a very suspicious call has eluded me for the last ni~.e years - namely WLSD-1220, Big Stone ~, Va. ¥1hy e.r1y station would want to be identified with a potent hallucinogen is beyond me, although I •ve noticed stranger--er, queerer call cases-- namely ·:/FAG and liIPS, both 1250 (the message is stay awa~ fr0111 12501) Now I unfortunately have a wild enough imagination to guess what reception f rom a YILSD would be lilre. I pi cture tuning into 1220 at sundown one evenir:g and hearing old Jefferson Airplane albums inter spresed with giggling and announcements which run like this 1 "Hey man, look at the colors." I am not wild enough to imagine what, a verie from Yil.>D would be like or let alone solve the riddle behind Big Stone Gap, the alleged town where V\LSD •s vibes orl.ginate (although I•m sure it has a lot of "meanircg"). Miyway my big disappointment in life is t hat there• s no Vi or KPOT . DXine; in August was a boon, August beirJg generally less stormy than July. f even had a good .a.:i.; on 8/18, logging 'liT.liA-l2 50 w/Vrr.IE off I llGH-1310 w/ViCAM off. I believe l log0 ed my fir st Vlisconsin station around l0 150pm on 8/30 catchin& an ID which was 65f. WEllP 6c 357& v;DAE-- that was on 1250 behir.d the Cowboy-Steeler game on Y1T,U:. ~IEMP (?) played what seenied like nan-stop c/rr mx &: the a.rwouncer wa• ft>-.ale. I have not ruled out the possibility of YiDVA, a c/ w station which came barrelir:g in after midnight. Did I log l.isconsin, t hat big:;est tease ir: all the 50 states? Did I log Tampa? lielp me out. So long & 73s. (WI.SD had those calls long before the "invention" of LlD, Ross. VIF'AG's calls had to do with cigarettes (fags) in tobacco country; they•ve changed calls recently though -Ere)

WCF L-1000 WILL CHANGE FORllAT KEN ONYSCHUK - 239 Fir - Park Forest, Illinois 8/30/80

A lot of newa to report. Aug. 8, WJPC Chicago went 24 hours. I didn't know about it for four days, when I tuned in 950 about 6155am & heard soul mx, then TClll Jety-ner cCllles in w/"Welcane to the new 24-hour WJPC." Oh brother! The night towers are at

142nd St. West of Burnham Avenue and the change in power & pattern at 9pm is noticable here. I •m about 18 miles SW of Burnham . Also WCFL will be dropping its disastrous t.'X/'l'LK fomat s oon for a change to music, probably popular. They're losing millions & a change was badly needed for tloe lowest rated 50,000w All station in broadcasting history - less than i of 1% of the Chicago audience . Also the Century Broadcasting Stations WAIT-WI.()() is doing very well. WLOO (Fll-100) is #1 Fii in Chicago w/ its BFL mx, which I happen to like during T1Ilf wail<e-up morning hour s . TELLS OF HIS EARLIER DXING DAYS J.E. IEWI ~ - 1934 East 51 Street - fl6 - Tulsa, Oklahan& - 74105

It•s fun, at age 34, to look back on the nearly geCl!letrical growth in the state-of-the-art in both All & Fii radios. 1ly first experience with any ~nd of radio DXing -s with a small five-tube green set - name not remembered but it ma;· have been a Sylvania -at Highland Park, Ill., about 23 crow milo s North of Chicago. In the early to mid 50• s it was exciting for a pre-adolescent to hear Denver (KOA) or New York (WABC, or other biggies) but thst particular set didn•t have the sensitivity or selectivity to do too much better ev-en with atmospherics. A couple years later I graduated to another set with much greater potential and with Short Wave. It was, I believe, an R.C.A. lifted out of an old console with record player. It worked better on SW, frankly, but I started pullini; 5 & 1 kilowat-ters and even some bug-powered like the then WCR\'f Chicago with 100 whole wat ts! About that time I went off to DMllllllond, Wi s •• for several weeks. Although I had no radi,,bp there one of my friends did, and I managed, if my memory fun ctions, the Ashland station on 1400 kl!z at night wilth very little interference. They ware running the J.!ilwaukee Braves games that Summer. Back home a year or two later I bought my first Zen i th Royal 500 ei ght-transistor and things reall y improved. I could pull just about any station which put a .Ol llV 'M signal in to Highland Park or anywhere ir1 the 25 or s o states I travelled to in the -next ten years. I became a seeker of lOOw stations, often driving or tra i ning hundreds of miles to visit one. lolapping expected signals i n travel was another thrill, especially when DA•s d i dn't foul up my projections. Although failing in iOath at school I figured out the in-verse square law and started going by square roots f or e stimation. (By the way, does any-one know a fairly accurate formula for estimating AM signal distance based on wavelength & power?) By the 6o•s I had another Zenith and was off to college in Tampa, Fla. where Guba mes sed up everything and lOkw stations about 1000 kHz had tr~ble getting 40 miles in the daytime. Probably '111/1 best catch by 1960 was getting WQA.11, lliami, 560 kHz at lkw at about 3 or 4am CST one cold Viinter' s night after WIND Chicago was iind enough to cut their carrier. I•ve been an NRC member now for several months and have grown to respect those who have ~used. I•ll be contributing more regularly now and plan to help with the new log pronto and even have a few signal maps. Next month, a daytime bandscan and s0111e nighttime goodies from this central location. Thanks to the Midwest members with whom I spoke via landline last month. 73. For the record, WIDF has five towers in a stro.i ,;ht line, WKI S has thee in a line (E- Yi }. and 'l'/HOO has five in a nonsymmetirio .. al arrangement. A vi sit waa made to ~~LN-1520, a r e ligious st at i on in Apopka which simulca•ts 'on Fl.: (as does our local on 1520, WGllB/llKES- FM, also a r eligious f ormat). The announcer on duty was curious about >IGNB whi ch apparently is directional to the East (as is ~~JJ;I). A bandscan just out side of Mt. Dora (a:J miles NW of Orlando) revealed that ~KBX..630 was quite listenable at 250 miles for one of my longest daytime DX rece ptions over land. The weakest Tampa stations the re were Wl!B0-1050 {250w) and @AE-1250. For a station wi th flagship rights to Bue games as well as a dive rs ified market for music and f ive-night-a..week talk ' programa, WDAE 1 s signal coverage i s di sappointingly limited_ primari ly due to its DA and poor XR site. WQPD-l.430 also suffers f rom a poor XR location - just to the ·;;est of the agine 70-foot tower is a hill wcich wreaks havoc with their coverage of Tampa-~t. Pete mediocre in t he daytime and nonexistant at night. Granted, lkw isn't supposed to cover a whole lot, but WQPD gets obliterated by Cuba just ten miles out of Lakeland. \\"DAE gets some skywan QRJ1 in l.3.keland at night - l\1lBO is much strollier there for Buos games. Other stations located were ViLBE-790 and WOKB-loOO. WGT0-540 has been told 1 f they want the 10 kw at night that they requested they will need TEN towers - meaning thly still wouldn't cover all of their own county at night while giving Orlando primary coverage! As ED KITRUS mentioned, the adjustable RF attenuator works wonders when locating a station' s XR. All you han to do is turn down t he gain until the signal strength needle is at mi d-scale; as i t rises just tu rn down t he ga i n fur t her until the needle pins even with total attenuation, by which time the towers s hou ld be within view. All told, it was a very worthwhile expedi t ion. WHAT ·1n LL HAPP EN TO llY VERIES? ERNEST Ii. . CO OPER - 5 Anthony Street - Provincetown, Massachusetts - 02657 /617~87-9337

I was sorry to hear the LOS ANGELES Convention / 5-9pm or l-3am wasn•·t too well attended, It points out the fact that the hosts must get publicity before the members early and often, and aiso he/ they should be prQllinent iii"'Lbisings o~ at least in s QDe part of DX NEWS, to thus be known to the members to be actiTe in the hobby. I don•t favor a once-a-year all-BCB club combined convention, but it would seem that in NRC•s case, that the oite be in the Eastern or Central Time tone, for we do not have very many active members further West. .iembers yes, but .not active ones, at lllast as far ae DX NEWS is concerned. Oh yes, t here are SOllE - but not Tery many. Ask JIM CRITCHE'l'T, who keeps beggina; other Western members to Muse. Here•s a subject I•d like to see kicked around in future issues. Vlhat is to happen to the verie collections of NRCers - and IRCAers - who pass away? For ex8lllple, does anyone know where the veries of the late NORllAN llAGUIRE are right now? To think of them being thrown away is ve ry disturbing to me. I would hate to die feeling that my verie collection was going to the Town Dumpl JERRY STARR has an idea about this, and I hope he will Muse about it soon, but I'd like to see what others might think. Should these veries be preserved, and if so, where? And by whom? Or should they be handed over to the traahman? Locally, l'l'POE-1520, Greenfield, Mass. is on RS, first noticed by me on 8/30; the promise of veries by them is still just that - a promise. Provincetown will soon have ito own non-commercial Fil station on 91,9, l,OOOw, and the call letters are lik<.ly to be WOllR, "()\lter-Most Radio." I t wi ll be handled by volunteers , of whi ch I hope to be one. And, on 9'2.7, VTneyard Eaven, on i.;artha•s Vineyard, Mass. will soon be on the air with 3,000w. About three years ago, there was a station i n Tisbury, on the Vineyard, which ""nt out of business. They also used 92 .7 and 3kw, so this will probably be that transmitter, Also, WHJJ has replaced ;·;JAR-920, whi ch in turn has replaced WRLM-93 ·3· WHJJ is AN..6, off l!Ma. I enjoyed a recent visit from NRCer PETE SKINNER, an engineer for 'llUNR-1.600, and a phone call frQD Roger llelson, formerly of WLIX-540, now of ViXKS-1430 . lie says - get this - the reason WCRB-102.5 runs AN-7 is because it is CHEAPER to hire a DJ than it is to employ a security guard! That should tell you some thing about wages at a radio sta t ionl He says their XR is out in the sticks and the y feel it would be too dallierous just to a/ off and go hanet Ah yes, • t is a great world in which we live. Thanks to PAUL MOU NT & ROLIAND LINDBIADE for their recent phone calls. Well, no new catches, and no new veriea, a perfect batting average _ O for O.

CHAPTER CllVIT - STATION PROFilE-- - W BA P - - - - - - - - - - - -by PETE KEMP In 1921 Harold Hough -• working for the Ft. V.'orth Star-Telegram, but his

mind -• exploring a new medium, radio. He visited William Branch, who had a home-made five-""tt ri' working on his kitchen table. After many discussions and e ndless expe riments the two men decided to give it a go, J'!lcking up and moving into an empty room a t the S tar-Telegram building. Along the ""Y they mana~ed to secure a 500 watt We s tern Electri c transmi tter, the first of its ·kind in the South, the s ixteenth one manufactured. On ~~y 2, 1922, with a $200 rig and an antenna strung acros s to an adjoining building 'i,'BA.P took to the air with a mi ghty power of ten watts on a frequency of 360 meters. During the 1920•s WBAP changed its frequency and power four times , goi ng from 10 to 10,000 ""tts via 36o meters , 400 meters, 630 kc 1s., with a brief stint on 600 kc's., finally winding up on 800 kc Is . Vlhile NBC was fomous for many years with their ID chimes, Yo'BAP was r ecoe;nized with an ID cowbell. In 1927 W!A P and l'1FAA bega n the practice of y ielding air time whenever one station had a special program. Also in that year they became an NBC aff i liate. In 1928 they moved thei r facilitie s to Shady Oak Farm near Lake 'llorth, and were gr anted 50,000 watt status on 800 kc.1s. with shared time with KTHS in Hot "pri ngs, Ark. This arrangement dj d not work out too well, s o ~EAP received pennission to share time with \'IFAA (who was at that t i me sharing with KRLD, isn •t that confus-ing?) In 192) the Lake 11 orth facilities were sold to a !.iexican station and WBAP moved in with \'1FAA in Grapevine, Texas, wi th studio facilities at the Bl11 ckstone Hotel in Fort Worth. Just to mix things up a bit the Star-Tele gram then purchased K~KO, incre~Sad its power to 5,000 watts and affiliated with the NBC Blue Network. Now the fun starts. With all these stat i on~ operating on shared or di fferent frequencies. and at various times coupled with new broadcast in' laws a nd interference problems, a new arrangement was needed. The result was. WBAP & ll'FAA moved from 800 to 8;t) kHz. The call letters of KGKO were dropped but now, dle to time sharing, t h e frequency was retai ned and four stations were created. How about that bureaucratic decision? V•EAP-570, WBAP-820, WFAA-570 and -:.rAA-820. At 12 10lam Friday, May l 1970, VIBAP tel'!llinated its relat i on ship with «F AA and became the sole oc cupier of 820 with WFAA taking over the 570 slot, thus ending a long era of history and confusion.

NRC LOGS $4.00

When, since a nationwide fast food chain reinstituted the 25¢ hamburger, have you seen prices come DOWN in the last 10 years? Never you say? Read on. Now, for a limited time only ( as long as the supply lasts) you have the opportunity to purchase something for almost HALF PRICElll! You say that your NRC Domest ic Log is all dog-earred, with missing pages? Or worse still you DON'T even have a copy of the best DXing aid in print for the upcoming DX season? NOW you can have a complete copy of the current NRC Domestic Log for ONLY $4.oo:::: Yes any order received at the Publications Center after September 15 will be honored at the above price as long as current supplies last. No limit on quantities, open to members and non-members alike.

Yes a NEW NRC Log is in the works, you could wait for the new edition. But that revised NEW edition will NOT be completed and at the printer for at least another 4 to 5 months, and by then the season will be at least half over and you will be without a good source of accurate info as far as station data, addresses for verifications, etc.

No we have not taken leave of our senses. We currently have an overstock situation of the NRC Domestic Log. We need to reduce this inventory and convert it to $$$ for the upcoming NEW edition of the NRC Night Pattern Book as well as the new edition of the NRC Domestic Log sometime ~fter the first of the year. Printing is becoming a very expensive part of the club's operation- and you can bet that the NEW editions of both the Night Pattern Book and the NRC Domestic Log will be priced higher than the current editions.

Soooo ••••• now is the time to come to the aid of your Club and at the same time buy something invaluable to a DXer at a below-cost price. Send those orders NOW to the Publications Center, Frank Dailey is anxiously awaiting those orders!!!!!!
