Knowing how to weld can be quite a
valuable skill to learn. As with most
specialty skills, welding has certain safety
precautions that everyone who welds
should be fully aware of before ever
touching torch/gun.
The Basics
• Never weld without a face shield. This is the number one rule of welding.
• Closed shoes must be worn.
• A long sleeved, flame retardant shirt must be worn.
• Always wear ear protection.
• Never weld on - or near - anything which has been cleaned with a chlorinated hydrocarbon, like brake cleaner. When combined with UV light, it can create phosgene gas which can kill you and the people around you.

Fire
• Before welding, be sure your surroundings are free
from flammable items such as paper and flammable
liquids.
• Never wear gloves that have been exposed to
flammable materials while welding.

• Be sure the floor around your work area is free of puddles of water, especially around the weld bench and the machine.
• Be sure the weld machine is dry, including the main box, the torch, the pedal, and the plugs.
• When done correctly, there is little chance of electrocution from a properly functioning machine.
Burns

• Welded metal will remain hot for several minutes after being welded. Always use caution when handling the pieces.
• If you do happen to burn yourself, immediately rinse with cold water. Seconds count!
Gas tanks
• Argon and CO2 are gasses found naturally in our
atmosphere and are not inherently dangerous.
However, if left leaking in an enclosed space they can
cause suffocation by displacing the breathable air.
• Tanks should always be stored upright and secured
with a non flammable brace.
