IntroductionVehicular emissions are one of the primary reasons behind the rising air pollution and deteriorating air quality, particularly in Indian cities. It is also further increasing our dependence on international imports to meet the ever growing demand for petroleum. Hence, vehicle and fuel efficiency is an important area that requires immediate policy changes. There is an urgent need to put in place stricter emission and fuel efficiency standards for all types of fuel-powered vehicles. Car manufacturers are playing a big role in this regard, albeit for a different purpose.

Leading car manufacturers are continuously trying to improve the fuel efficiency of their cars, particularly SUVs that were perceived to be least fuel efficient amongst passenger vehicles. Their prime objective is to make these vehicles more appealing and economical for their prospective customers and thus increase their customer base.

This compact SUV has already become one of the highest selling SUVs in India since its launch few years ago. One of the most spacious SUVs in its price range, EcoSport offers three engine options- 1.5 litre diesel, 1.5 litre petrol or 1.0 litre EcoBoost petrol to the buyers. Delivering 22.67 kilometers per litre, it currently tops the list as the most fuel efficient SUV in the Indian marketplace.

2. Hyundai Creta – 21.38 KPL Mileage

Hyundai Creta is a much sought after SUV not only because of its great looks, the brand value and a very premium and feature-rich interior, but also owing to its fuel efficiency. The 1.4 litre diesel offers a mileage of 21.38 kpl while the 1.6 litre diesel boasts of an ARAI certified fuel economy of 19.67 kpl.

3. Nissan Terrano – 20.45 KPL Mileage

Powered by a comparatively larger 102 bhp 1.6 litre engine, this Japanese SUV is a highly fuel efficient vehicle delivering 20.45 km to a litre. The vehicle is also available with 84 bhp 1.5 litre diesel and 108bhp 1.5 litre diesel engine. The vehicle offers top notch ride quality and is best suited to a city environment.

4. Renault Duster – 19.87 KPL Mileage

When you talk about compact SUV segment, you cannot ignore Renault Duster. After all, it all started with this vehicle. With a 1.5 litre engine which produces 84 bhp and goes 19.87 kmpl, Renault Duster is also one of the most fuel efficient SUVs in India. The Duster is also available with two more sets of specifications- 102 bhp 1.6 litre petrol and 108 bhp 1.5 litre diesel.

5. Mahindra TUV300 – 18.49 KPL Mileage

With a claimed mileage that stands at 18.49 kpl, Mahindra TUV300 is another most fuel efficient car that is designed especially for Indian roads. It is popular for its super macho looks, spacious interiors, and 7 seats. The SUV is offered with a 1.5 litre diesel engine that puts up 84 bhp of peak power.

ConclusionPlease note that the above mileage figures are the ARAI certified mileage (under standard conditions) as claimed by the respective car manufacturer. Sometimes, there could be a very significant difference between the ARAI certified mileage and the actual mileage on Indian roads (real world conditions). Still, the above mentioned figures give us a fair idea about a sport utility vehicle and its fuel efficiency.
