5 Minute Quick Write

Consider a teacher who meant a great deal to you… Reflect on a teacher that was special to you… What did they do to earn that esteem (respect & affection)?

SHARING… thank you!

“Love” by William Maxwell

Hold a memory of a special teacher in your mind as you listen to this story about another remarkable teacher, Miss Vera Brown.

Foreshadowing

Foreshadow is a device which hints or warns of events to happen later in the story.

Finding Foreshadowing

“Love” by William Maxwell uses symbols and imagery to foreshadow that Mrs. Brown was going to die.

As you reread the story, underline or highlight any symbols or images that may hint toward death.

Look for funeral/cemetery imagery, flower imagery, specific use of language, etc…

SHARING!

You probably uncovered hints others missed, and they may have found evidence you did not see.

The richer the text, the harder it is for any single reader to uncover it all on a first reading.

Sharing is important!

How Does The Following Imagery Enrich this Story?

Funeral/cemetery imagery• “graven in stone”• “wormed”• “raised the lid of the box”• “go to the cemetery”• “dim lights”• “churches”• “angel”

How Does The Following Imagery Enrich this Story?

• Flower imagery

• pansies

• asters

• sweet peas

Flowers are beautiful when they are young, but even in their beauty, they begin to wilt and die.

“She reminded me of pansies.”

Consider the Following Use of Language

• She was there to “help us past the hard part.”• “Many happy returns to Miss Vera Brown.”• “her delicate fingers”• “we meant to have her for out teacher forever.”• “We intended to pass right up through the sixth,

seventh, and eighth grades and on to high school taking her with us.’

• “She belonged to her illness.”

The Circus Poster as Foreshadowing

The circus poster was once colorful and a sign of youth, hope, and optimism—though the narrator could never see the end of it. Now, when the boys ventured out to visit their ill teacher, the

poster was weather-beaten with

loose strips of paper hanging

down.

Using POETIC Language

In “Love”, Maxwell uses poetic language to paint a picture of Miss Brown, and he uses poetic language to foreshadow her death.

We are going to practice using poetic language to express our thoughts about a number of things, including this story.

Brainstorm: on loose leaf

• On this side of your chart list as many “intangible” items as you can think of.

• On this side of your chart list as many “tangible” items as you have on your intangible list.

Exploring Relationships, Exploring Meaning

• Friendship is like a driver’s license

because it will expire if you do not renew it. Nicole, 14

• Trust is like a video game

because there are many levels to it. Josh, 15

Activity ONE: on loose leaf

From your list complete the following sentence by selecting one intangible and one tangible item. Then share it with the person sitting beside you!

• _________________ (intangible item) is like a (tangible item) _________________

because _________________________.

Extending that Metaphorical Thinking!

Extended Similes

• Friendship is like a driver’s license because it will expire if you do not renew, it takes skill to obtain, and it requires that you pass a test.

• Trust is like a video game because there are many levels to it, it requires practice, and it’s hard to repair once it’s broken.

Activity TWO: on loose leaf

• Continue to extend your previous simile using the template below.

_________________ (intangible item) is like a (tangible item ) _____________

because ____________________ , and __________________________.

Activity THREE: on loose leaf

Finally, think about the love the boys had for Miss Brown in “Love.” How would you describe it? With the story in mind, complete the following sentence.

• The boys’ love for Miss Brown is like (a) ______________ because ___________ _________________________________.

Metaphor Enables Readers To:

• Make much more complex connections when they read

• Understand abstract material

• Enhance their thinking processes

• Gain insight into relationships among ideas that help to forge a more thorough understanding of new learning.

Poetry often uses metaphorical language….

But it rarely gives the explanation (“because”) – that’s for us to figure

out!

Please HAND IN your loose leaf.
