Hold a memory of a special teacher in your mind as you listen to this story about another remarkable teacher, Miss Vera Brown.

Foreshadow is a device which hints or warns of events to happen later in the story.

Finding Foreshadowing

“Love” by William Maxwell uses symbols and imagery to foreshadow that Mrs. Brown was going to die.

As you reread the story, underline or highlight any symbols or images that may hint toward death.

Look for funeral/cemetery imagery, flower imagery, specific use of language, etc…

The circus poster was once colorful and a sign of youth, hope, and optimism—though the narrator could never see the end of it. Now, when the boys ventured out to visit their ill teacher, the

Using POETIC Language

In “Love”, Maxwell uses poetic language to paint a picture of Miss Brown, and he uses poetic language to foreshadow her death.
