Spain was going to cede Spanish Florida to the U.S. anyway.

1819: Adams-Onis treaty: Spain cedes, or surrenders, Spanish Florida to the US.

This compromise outlawed slavery in the rest of the Louisiana Purchase, north of the 36 degree north latitude line.Kept a balance of power between free and slave states in the Senate.Monroe supports this law.
