Alumni Data Source: The data used for the alumni section of this book come from the university’s Business Systems Resource Advance database of Carnegie Mellon alumni, parents, donors, and friends. Data are as of August 28, 2009. Other Sources:

Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association Data: Office of Alumni Relations

Definitions:

Alumni: Defined as (a) all persons who have been admitted to any school or college of Carnegie Institute of Technology or Carnegie Mellon University, who have completed at least one semester of classes in a degree program, and who have left the University in good standing and (b) all persons who have received an Honorary Degree from the University.

Active: Defined as all alumni who maintain a current postal or e-mail address E-mail Only: Indicates that the only contact information available is e-mail address

Alumni Interest Group: Any group of Carnegie Mellon alumni who share a common interest or bond and who desire to affiliate with each other as a sub-group of the Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association. Alumni Interest Groups are formed around at least one of the following criteria:

Former membership in an officially recognized student organization, A shared personal characteristic (such as ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation), A shared postgraduate professional experience (such as entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors, etc.).

Chapter: Historically, “clan” was chosen to describe the regional alumni groups of the Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association, reflecting the Scottish heritage of Andrew Carnegie. In recent years, “chapter” is used with more frequency as new groups are formed. For ease of reference, “chapter” refers to both clans and chapters. Honorary Alumni:

For degree level, honorary alumni are counted within the “Non-Grad/Certificate” category For degree college and preferred degree level, honorary alumni are within the “Other/Honorary” category

Other Category:

When referring to college codes, the “other” category includes:

o Administration and Management Sciences o Industries o Library School o Mellon Institute, honorary alumnus(a) o Margaret Morrison Carnegie College o Printing Management

The “other” category for international active alumni by country of current residence, preferred degree college, and level of

preferred degree includes all countries of current residences with international active alumni counts of fewer than ten. The “other” category for domestic active alumni by region of current residence, preferred degree college, and level of preferred

degree includes all cities of current residences with domestic active alumni counts of fewer than 75.

Office of Alumni Relations and Alumni Association Vision Alumni Relations’ vision is to be a world class alumni organization that sustains and strengthens the lifelong bond between alumni and Carnegie Mellon University. Mission Alumni Relations’ mission is to connect and reconnect alumni, students, parents, and friends to the university and each other through experiences and communications for the purpose of generating multifaceted support for Carnegie Mellon. Chapters Fifty active domestic chapters (28 Central and 22 Tepper School of Business) Twenty-one international chapters (10 Central and 11 Tepper School of Business)

Class Notes In fiscal year 2009, 377 class notes were submitted by alumni for inclusion in Carnegie Mellon Today, both print and online. Electronic Services Carnegie Mellon provides an array of online services for alumni at http://www.cmu.edu/alumni including:

Reunions In 2009, 1st through 20th class reunions were celebrated during Spring Carnival and 25th through Platinum (55th reunion and beyond) were celebrated during Homecoming Weekend. Starting in 2010, all class reunions (1st reunion-platinum) will be celebrated during Spring Carnival & Reunion Weekend. Additionally, reunions will be celebrated in decades with the reunion classes serving as the hosts for the event. All alumni from any given decade can attend each year. Student Programs The Alumni Association sponsors several programs during the year including:

Dinner with 12 Tartans Slice of Life Conference and Programming Series Student Homecoming Committee First-year Student Alumni Association Welcome Student-alumni social events Programs during Orientation, Family Weekend, and Commencement Carnegie Mellon University Highland Ambassadors program

Carnegie Mellon Alumni Travel Program Travel in 2008 - 2009 included: Tahiti, Western Mediterranean, Cruising the Baltic Sea, the Norwegian Fjords, Dalmatian Coast, Dordogne, Mandarin China, Amazon River Journey, Expedition to Antarctica, Thailand-Malay Peninsula, Waterways of Holland and Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, and Holland
