Case Study: Whistle-Blowing and the Environment

Jessica Smith works as a clerk for Avco Environmental Services, a small toxic-waste disposalcompany. The company has a contract to dispose of medical waste from a local hospital. During thecourse of her work, Jessica comes across documents that suggest Avco has actually been disposing ofsome of this medical waste in a local municipal landfill. Jessica is shocked. She knows this practice isillegal. And even though only a small portion of the medical waste that Avco handles is disposed ofthis way, any amount at all seems a worrisome threat to public health.

Jessica gathers the appropriate documents and takes them to her immediate superior, Dave Lamb. Dave says, Look, I don't think that sort of thing is your concern, or mine. We're in charge of recordkeeping, not making decisions about where this stuff gets dumped. I suggest you drop it.

The next day, Jessica decides to go one step further and talk to Angela van Oldenburg, the company'soperations manager. Angela is clearly irritated. Angela says, This isn't your concern. Look, these arethe sorts of cost-cutting moves that let a little company like ours compete with our giant competitors. Besides, everyone knows that the regulations in this area are overly cautious. There's no real danger toanyone from the tiny amount of medical waste that 'slips' into the municipal dump. I consider thismatter closed.

Jessica considers her situation. The message from her superiors was loud and clear. She stronglysuspects that making further noises about this issue could jeopardize her job. Further, she generallyhas faith in the company's management. They've always seemed like honest, trustworthy people. Butshe is troubled by this apparent disregard for public safety. On the other hand, she asks herself whethermaybe Angela is right in arguing that the danger is minimal. Jessica looks up the phone number of anold friend who worked for the local newspaper.

1.What ethical dilemma is Jessica facing?2.Is Avco Environmental demonstrating socially responsibly behaviour? Why or why not?3.What do you think Jessica should do? Explain your reasoning.

    Case Study: Harassment and Discrimination

John Smith works as a assembly line worker for Nessee Products, a large manufacturer of desserts. The company has a worker health and safety board located in the break room. There are postersadvertising fire alarm exits, where to find the first aid kits, machinery care when cleaning, how toavoid injury and repetitive strain at work, the steps to take in case of injury at work, and conferencesyou can attend. There is also the names of the health and safety representatives for the company.

During the course of his work, John has noticed his new supervisor discriminating a fellow lineworker; mostly in relation to his ethnicity. John gets along well with his supervisor and is oftenpraised for his great work. He wonders what to do about this situation.

John searches harassment at work online that night. He finds issues related to abuse of authority andfeels this relates well to the situation he sees at work. The next day, John quietly inquires aboutreporting harassment at work. His friends on other lines encourage him to keep his mouth shut. Davesays, Look, it's not happening to you, so just drop it. Amy is more sympathetic, saying, John we'relooking out for you too. I heard last month that another worker was being harassed. He complainedand was fired within the week. The administration documented the reason for being fired as non-related to the complaint. Don't take the chance.

The next day, John decides to go one step further and talk to Jack, the worker receiving the abuse. Jackis clearly upset. Jack says, This isn't your concern. I can handle the supervisor myself. Besides, everyone knows the real reason the last person was fired. I can't afford to loose my job.

John considers his situation. The message from his co-workers was loud and clear. He stronglysuspects that making further noises about this issue could jeopardize his job and Jack's. Further, afterlooking at the health and safety board again, he realizes there is nothing relating to this issue. He hasnever been involved in a dispute with Nessee's management and they've always seemed liketrustworthy people. He is still troubled by this apparent disregard for ethnic minorities. On the otherhand, Jack is the recipient and he's not worried.
