Welcome to St. Rose
This community was established by Bishop
George Lucas, former Bishop of Springfield, in the
fall of 2008 for the celebration of the extraordinary
form of the Roman Missal (Traditional Latin
Mass). If you are not familiar with this rite, do not
hesitate to ask for help from the ushers.
To follow the liturgy on Sunday, you need a red
booklet (pews) and the Sunday proper leaflet
(vestibule). For sung Masses, you may also wish to
take a hymnal (vestibule) to sing along.
On weekdays, you need a Latin-English Missal.
They are available at Poppe‘s in Quincy & St. John
Fisher Bookstore in Jacksonville (see back of bulle-
tin). You may also follow the ordinary in the red
booklet.
Do not hesitate to make the responses along with
the altar boys, if you are able to do so.
To join the St. Rose of Lima Chaplaincy, please
call the parish office at 217-222-2511 or mail one
of the cards found in the back of the Church.
On Sundays and Holy Days, please come and
join us after Mass in the Church hall for coffee
and donuts.
If you ask many Catholics today, what we mean
by the term ‗Immaculate Conception‘, more than likely
they will reply that we are referring to the miraculous
conception of Jesus on the day Archangel Gabriel an-
nounced to the Blessed Virgin she would be the Mother
of the Savior. This, of course, is one of the greatest mo-
ments in Salvation History, the moment God assumed a
human nature, the Incarnation, but it is not what we
mean by Immaculate Conception.
The Divine plan of salvation goes back way be-
yond the Annunciation. It starts in the Divine Wisdom
of God before time itself. The Incarnation has to take
place in a woman‘s womb and how could the thrice Holy
God assume a human nature in a creature tainted by sin?
This woman had to be free of sin to be a fitting dwelling
for God. The collect of today‘s Mass highlights this as-
pect of the mystery we call the Immaculate Conception.
―O God who through the Immaculate Concep-
tion of the Virgin prepared for Your Son a fitting habita-
tion; we pray that You, who preserved Her from all stain,
by the death foreseen of this Your same Son, will grant
us also through Her intercession to come cleansed to
You.‖
The mystery of the Immaculate Conception
should be a source of great hope for us. The Blessed
Virgin is a woman, fully human, not God and Man like
Her Son. And yet through the grace which Christ won
for us all on the Cross, His Mother, even before her
birth was preserved from sin so that she might prove to
be the most fitting of mothers, the Mother of God, of
Jesus Christ, the Mother of Him who is at once both
God and Man. And today‘s collect goes on to encourage
us to ask for the necessary graces for our own lives
through the intercession of this Virgin.
The Immaculate Conception is the name under
which Our Lady is patroness of this country and also pa-
troness of our diocese, the diocese of Springfield in Illi-
nois. December 8 is also a feast of obligation.

The Immaculate Conception Church News
Sunday, December 6: Second Sunday of Advent: The
liturgy focuses today on St. John the Baptist, the fore-
runner, who represents the expectation and hope of the
just for a messiah, at the eve of the manifestation of Je-
sus, Savior and Son of God.
Tuesday, December 8: Feast of the Immaculate Con-
ception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is a Holy Day
of obligation, the patronal feast of the Catholic Church
in America and the patronal feast of our diocese. It is
also the title of the Cathedral of Springfield which was
recently re-dedicated after 16 months of restoration.
There is a strict obligation to attend Mass on this day.
Besides the 12:10 pm Mass, there will be a second
Mass at 6 pm.
On December 8, after the 6 pm Mass (around 7 pm),
the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed until 1 am on
December 9 for a night of prayer. This time of adora-
tion will replace our usual adoration on Thursday after-
noon. This is part of the National Night of Prayer for
Life. It was on the feast of the Immaculate Conception
(then celebrated on December 9) that Our Lady of
Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas and the unborn,
first appeared to St. Juan Diego. We pray for the sanc-
tity of all human life. 11pm – 12am central is the hour
of unity when all churches throughout the country are
praying together.
No Exposition and Benediction on Thursday.
Thank you for your generosity towards the Food Pantry
of Quincy Catholic Services. On Friday, December 4,
we brought them all the food you donated during the
month of November, as well as a monetary donation of
$1034.50. This is our modest contribution to feed the
hungry in our area. QCS thanks all of you for this gen-
erous gift.
Are you looking for Religious Christmas cards? We
have sample packets of 4 FSSP Christmas Cards avail-
able for free in Church vestibule. If you like them you
may order more from the Fraternity
Christmas Special! One week only. December 6th – 13th.
Beautiful St. Rose of Lima Stained Glass window Note
or Wish Cards. Set of 20 (10 of each) for a donation of
$15. (Usually $20) One is a reproduction of our rear
window above the choir loft: the seven angels/spirits
before the throne of God and the other one is a repro-
duction of our gospel-side window: the Nativity scene.
You may obtain them at the rectory during Business
hours or in the vestibule of the Church. All proceeds
go to St. Rose of Lima.
Liturgical Calendars: Two calendars may be ordered
which are based on the liturgical Calendar of the Ex-
traordinary form of the Latin Rite (Roman Missal
promulgated in 1962). Both have for theme churches
in Rome. We can get a discount if we order them in
bulk. The first one ($8) is published by the Priestly Fra-
ternity of St. Peter and contains black and white repro-
ductions of engravings of Roman Churches (including
the FSSP church in Rome, La Trinità dei Pelegrini)
and the other one ($10) is published by Angelus Press
and contains beautiful color photos of Roman
churches. Sample copies will be left in vestibule with
sign-up sheets. Do not remove them!
Coffee & Donuts: we are trying to organize our Coffee
& Donuts so that each month a different family (or a
small group) is taking care of it. It consists in picking up
the donuts and getting them ready as well as coffee and
juice right after both Masses on Sunday. Please see
Steve Zanger if you are willing to help in this regard.
There is no cost involved as the money given to that
effect is sufficient.
Our classes resume this week: Adult Religion class on
Wednesday 6:30 pm and Latin class on Thursday at
6:15 pm. Latin Class: Bring your translation of the 3
parts of Qui erant Christiani? Pp 42, 46, 50 so we can
make the correction together.
Music: Can you play a music instrument? We need
your help to enhance our Christmas program. Always
feel free to contact Dolores or Charlotte with your
ideas, comments and suggestions either in person or by
phone (Phone numbers are on the front of the weekly
bulletin).
Pope Benedict's general prayer intention for December
is: "That children may be respected and loved and
never be the victims of exploitation in its various
forms". His mission intention is: "That at Christmas the
peoples of the earth may recognise in the Word Incar-
nate the light which illuminates every man, and that the
nations may open their doors to Christ, the Saviour of
the world".
Prayer of a mother: O God, grant that one of my sons becomes a priest! I promise to live as a good Christian woman and will lead my children to all that is good, wherewith I hope to receive the grace to be able to give You, O God, a holy priest. The prayer was short yet so
powerful that a flood of priestly vocations were bestowed
upon the town of Lu (500 priestly and religious voca-
tions in 50 years starting in 1881…).
