    Welcome

The University of Manchester Campus Sport Mixed 5-a-side Leagues 2011-12

Hello and welcome to this years Campus Sport Programme. Campus Sport activities are

focused on providing an easy way for our staff and students to take part in sport at a

level that suits you. Our very popular leagues provide an opportunity to be part of a

team playing regular fixtures in a range of sports. We also provide coaching courses for

beginner standard players, to give you the confidence to take your sport a step further

and join a University club or local club; currently we offer badminton, squash, handball

and mixed lacrosse. In addition, we run a number of tournaments and one-off activities

at various points, some in familiar sports and some in sports you may not have had a

chance to try before, so look out for these too as they are advertised during the academic

year. We also have the brand new Hall Sport Programme, including Squash, Badminton,

Basketball, Running and Dance exclusively for students living in Halls.

The SPORT Office staff are on hand if you have any questions about sport, health and

fitness opportunities at the University and there is a wealth of information available

online also at www.manchester.ac.uk/sport so there are no excuses for not getting

    involved!

Our 5-a-side leagues have been part of the programme for many years, attracting a cross-

section of footballers to this popular form of the game. This year however we have

invested in new 3G pitches, which have been long over due, I hope you enjoy playing on

the new surface, and Im sure Ill be turning out for the staff team every now and then! If

youre lucky enough to top the league or come second then dont forget to attend the

end of season awards evening to collect your medals.

I hope you enjoy taking part in the 5-a-side leagues this year and look forward to seeing

you around in the near future. Please feel free to use the details in the back of this

handbook to contact me by phone or email or drop into the SPORT Office.

Best of luck with your season,

    Andy Ellison

    Campus Sport Forums

All Campus Sport leagues will have a period of time

where all team captains will have the opportunity to

provide feedback to SPORT. Captains are asked to

please provide feedback on behalf of your team or

ask a representative to do so.

There will be up to two opportunities for this perleague per year.

    Sport Forum 1

This period will take place before the league

commences (after you have entered your team).

The aim of this time is to:

    Collect your captain handbook

Have an introduction to the league

Go over rules, fixtures and captain contact

    details

    Ask any questions you have.

    Sport Forum 2 - Feedback

This forum will take place towards the end of the

league and will be an online evaluation that all

players will have the opportunity to complete. The

aim of this process is to evaluate:

Changes required for the next academic

    year

    General Information

All games will be played at the Armitage Sports

Centre in Fallowfield on the outdoor, 3G football

    pitches, which are flood-lit.

Each team will be issued a set of fixtures that willensure they play every team in their division.

    Registration and Insurance

All players have to be registered (1 per player), this

charge is included in the team registration fee; you

will be provided with a team registration form. You

must register a minimum of ten players none of

which may be registered with another team in your

division. Any player you wish to add to your squad

after the initial submission of the player registration

form will be charge 2 per player.

All teams and players are insured if they are

registered. New players must be registered at the

SPORT Office prior to a game or they will violate the

terms of the insurance and appropriate disciplinary

    action will be taken.

    Referees

The home team (first team listed in the fixture) for

each game is in charge of organising a referee for

their own fixture; make sure you do this in plenty

of time! Firstly, contact your opposition and decide

if you want a referee as many teams prefer not to

have one if not then simply play the game,

resolve any disputes between yourselves and

submit your score to the Armitage reception orLeague Coordinator.

If you decide that you would like a referee either:

    1) Contact other teams playing that night inyour division to see if anyone would like to

    referee for you;

    2) Contact teams in other divisions to see ifthey would like to referee for you;

    3) Make an agreement between yourselvesand another team, i.e. youll referee all of

    their games if they referee yours;

    4) If you have no luck with any of the above, contact our 11-a-side league Referee

Secretary, Mark Jackson, on 0161 292

3795 as some of the leagues referees will

do 5-a-side games also and Mark will be

able to provide you with contact details.

If you arrange a referee, you will need to collect a

12 match fee(6 per team) from the players prior

to kick-off and hand this to your referee.

As the referees may be volunteers from the teams,

it is important that they are fully supported so that

they can give the best service to teams during

games. It is also important to remember that many

may have limited previous experience so players

must be patient with any decisions they disagree

with. For this reason, players and/or teams who

are abusive towards any of the volunteers will be

    penalised.

    Match Fee

If you have arranged for a referee to cover your

game, make sure you remember to reimburse

them for their time, especially if you intend to ask

    them to referee again!

    Times

Matches will take place at 6pm, 7pm, 8pm and

9pm. Please arrive on time. A 55 minute slot has

been allocated and games need to be finished

    within that time.

Games are 50 minutes long. This will be played as

two halves of 25 minutes with up to 5 minutes at

half time. Games should be ended at 55 minutes

past the hour, regardless of the time on the

referees watch, so the pitch is free for the nextgame.

    Injury time

As games must be completed within the 55 minute

slot, injury time will be limited all games should

be stopped at 55 minutes past the hour.

    Equipment

No equipment is provided for the league. If there is

a clash of kit colours, bibs may be available from

the Armitage reception but this is not guaranteed.

Teams are expected to adopt a team kit or same -

coloured shirt so that they are identifiable to the

    referee.

    Cancelling Matches

If a team cancels a match, the walkover score (10

0 win) will be awarded to the opponents. Teams

who cancel matches will be charged the full referee

fee if the cancellation notice to the referee is less

than 24 hours before the game time and may be

charged the pitch hire for the hour (20). If a teamcancels twice they risk being expelled from the

    league.

    Failure to show

If the opposition fails to show for a fixture, then

you may use that pitch time to practice and the

walkover score will apply. If a team is more than 10

minutes late after the pitch booking time, then the

game will be void and a walkover awarded to the

    team that arrived on time.

    Posting Results

Both teams must ensure the referee/home captain

has completed a scorecard. This card is handed to

the Armitage Centre reception desk (or to the

    league coordinator).

Points will be awarded as below:

    3 points for a win

    1 points for a draw

    0 points for a loss

    -1 points for a no show/late arrival

Scores and division tables will be available on the

SPORT website via the address to the right.

    End of season

The year finishes with an end-of-season awards

evening, which all players, managers, coaches,

captains, officials and supporters are welcome to

attend. There will also be a Champions League

tournament for all teams placed in the top two of

their respective leagues. This will be played at the

end of the Campus Sport season.

All winning or second-placed teams will be

awarded 10 medals. Teams may order and pay foradditional medals by notifying the Sport

Development Officer for Campus Sport. No

guarantee can be made to obtain additional medals

after the order has been placed as this depends

    entirel on the su lier.
