Sustainable development
"the development that meets
the needs of the present
without compromising the
ability of future generations to
meet their own needs". (Brundtland 1987, World Commission on Environment

Develop new technology
Build up practical skills
Increase cooperation between;
- individuals - disciplines - institutions - regions - countries
WHAT
HOW
Centre for Development Cooperation
in Fisheries (CDCF)
CDCF is a national centre (in Norway)
CDCF consist of 5 partners
CDCF role is to share their knowledge with developing countries
The competence within CDCF – is (a part of… ) what Norway can offer
Indonesia when it comes to capacity building in sustainability

Survey methods
Fish capture technology – selective gears
Stock assessment and management advice – The ecosystem based approach
Exact estimate of ;
-the size of the fish school
-the length of the fish
Video.grab – to 2500m depth;
-6 box corers- benthos, sediment
-Video camera
- still camera
- CTD (temperature, salinity)
-Current meter
-ROV with HD video
=> Survey time reduced by 1/3 + fantastic pictures
(all taken at 1000 m depth)

Represents a competence Cluster within
Norwegian Fisheries and Seafood Management
The original idea, conceived in the 1950s- A research
vessel available for developing nations
• Operated from Norway with Norwegian crew and
core scientific staff
• In close cooperation with FAO, uncoupled from
Norwegian fishery interests, flying the UN-flag
• First vessel left Norway in 1974, -next in 1993
……and hopefully a new vessel in 2016
The EAF-Nansen programme
During the surveys with R/V Dr. F. Nansen;
Estimate stock biomass
Identify species - biodiversity
Measure environmental variables
Conduct baseline studies – in relation to oil and gas development
Teach local scientists in survey techniques and sampling methods
