From the Presidents Desk

The 20th anniversary dinner was a great event, especially seeing those whom attended enjoying the evening. Catching up with previous members and club presidents was also a highlight. Thanks to Rob

Stennett for co-hosting and those who contributed to its organisation. I would still like to see input from you (the members) on leading trips or destinations for new trips.

Ray Collyer, Club President.

 Editor’s Notes ([email protected])

Don’t forget membership renewal is due (now) in October !.

I have included the FWDSA code of ethics outline on this page and details related to 4WD’ing in SA parks. We all like to access these areas and it is important that we know our obligations when visiting.

4WD Adventurers Club – Membership Renewal 2011

The club membership renewal fell due at the August annual general meeting. It needs to be paid by the October general meeting otherwise a late fee may apply.

It is still $60 per year for existing members with a $20 joining fee for new members.

All the details for membership renewal are contained on the current membership application & renewal form, a soft or hard copy of which can be obtained from the club membership officer ([email protected]).

Recreational Vehicle Handbook

Four-wheel driving is an ideal way to see and appreciate many of South Australia's parks and reserves. The Recreational Vehicles and Protected Areas in South Australia handbook (http://www.4wdsa.asn.au/nrau/RV Handbook.pdf) has been developed by the Department for Environment and Heritage in conjunction with the South Australian Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs and Tread Lightly! Australia. It aims to guide the management of recreational vehicles in protected areas through legislation and policy, and promote minimal impact practices to recreational vehicle users to provide safe and rewarding experiences within parks and reserves. Code of Ethics – Four Wheel Drive South Australia

Care and consideration is required if tracks like this will remain available for future 4WDers

• Keep to the laws and regulations on recreation vehicles. They change from state to state.

• Others have a right to peace and solitude - avoid noisy driving or riding near settlements and general recreation areas.

• Keep to approved vehicle corridors and tracks. On beaches and unvegetated sand areas, drive only where permitted.

• Alpine areas, swamps and vegetated dunes are easily damaged. Avoid them. • Respect our wildlife. Stop and look, but never disturb or chase animals. It can

affect their survival. • Keep the environment clean. Carry your own - and maybe other peoples' -

rubbish home. • Keep all fire restrictions. Extinguish your fire before leaving. Don't let your

exhaust emit sparks. • Keep to restrictions on use of public land. Respect national parks and other

conservation areas. • Get permission before driving on private land. Leave livestock alone and gates

as found. • Keep your vehicle mechanically sound and quiet with an efficient muffler. • Take adequate water, food, fuel and spares on trips. In remote areas travel

with another vehicle. • Join an appropriate and responsible recreation club if you use your vehicle

mainly for recreation. • Help in bushfire emergencies and search and rescue, if you are properly

equipped and able

Recent Trip Reports (Pre-October 2011)

Ngarkat – 17th to 18th September 2011

The weekend to Ngarkat / Border track involved 12 members 1 visitor being Dieter, Wade, Kevin, Jenny, Sarah, Deb, Steve, Allen, Walter, Sabine, Mia, Baz and Peter. We camped at Pine Hut Soak Friday night, having tea at Tailem Bend on the way (Baz and Peter wanted privacy, so we stayed at Pertendi Hut!)

Saturday saw us all assemble and drive towards the Border Track via Coxs Windmill, the Fish Ponds, that only had tadpoles, and Scorpion Springs, which then brought us to the Border Track. Dieter led us along the track which involved sand and sand hill driving. Stopped at Hensley's Trig Point for a look and continued to the first large sand hill, which looked near impossible to climb after watching 6 other vehicles in front of us, unable to reach the

top. The problem was solved when we suggested that they let their tyres down! This enabled them to move on, with “The Adventurers” having no trouble at all!

Lunch stop was declared at the Gums camp area. As this place is in a valley, it was a relatively protected area out off the wind in amongst wattles and a swarm of bees. After lunch, some more hills and sand, and some more hills and sand, and some more hills and sand, and some more..... (finally) we arrived at Red Bluff campground to set up camp and spend the night.

Sunday morning, a photo shoot,(some geocaching by myself and Jenny with no result) off along the track we continued, to where Dieter’s Ranger did not want to leave the top of a sand hill, resulting in our only recovery (by winch) (See front cover – Ed.). Lunch at The Bog Holes which were dry, but still proved entertaining. We interestingly enough finished the Border Track at the Mexican Border!!! Where were we Dieter??

A quiet drive back to Tailem Bend for coffee and farewell's, a good weekend had by all! Thanks Dieter:

Jenny & Kevin Campbell (alias Peter)

Black Hill Challenge - Sunday 30th October 2011

The BLACK HILL CHALLENGE presented by

OFFICIAL CHARITY

The Lions Club of Rostrevor will be conducting the 12th running of the Black Hill challenge on Sunday 30th October on a new and challenging course. The route of the race needed to be changed as we were no longer able to run through a piece of private land adjacent to the Black Hill Conservation Park.

Also with our aging and declining membership we needed to avoid having members man the crossing over Gorge Road, so accordingly the decision was made to start the event from Foxfield Oval on Maryvale Road Athelstone instead of Thorndon Park. After running around the oval the runners will cross the creek and run into the park and follow the buffer zone track around to the Addison Road entrance were we previously

entered the park. From here we follow the original track until we reach the junction of the Ambers Gully track and the Main ridge track at the Gorge Road end were the race will go up the main Ridge track and run back to the junction of the start of the Amber Gully track and retrace the track back to Foxfield Oval.

The race will commence at 8:00 am with competitors asked to assemble at 7:30 at the Foxfield Oval, previously we have been able to make our presentations at 10:00 but because of the new route we are unsure how long the race will take so we will aim to have the presentations at 10:30. The new route is still to be finalized but could be approximately 15 km.

The Race is run with the assistance of the Campbelltown City Council the 4 Wheel Drive Adventurers Club, St John and the Lions Club of Rostrevor all proceeds from the run are donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service

FEATURES: - Prize money and Trophies for placegetters - Finishing certificate for all competitors completing the course.

The event, which is a joint venture between The Rostrevor Lions, The City of Campbelltown and The 4WD Adventurers, has over the past eleven years, raised approximately $ 30,000 for the RFDS aircraft replacement program.

The 4WD Adventurers have a commitment to provide communication, observation, transport and water stations within the conservation park. It is anticipated that this year’s event will require 8 4WD vehicles to efficiently perform this task.

The meeting point for this year’s event is 6:30 am at Foxfield Oval.

Additionally two vehicles are needed to assist in setting out the course on the day prior to the event.

I will be unavailable this year and as such a co- coordinator / trip leader is required.

This event is an excellent opportunity for the club to give something back to the community.
