When Sandra awoke Tuesday morning, she just knew that she had to get through to the people in her organization. For her student population, learning online could present opportunities just not possible in face to face settings. She'd already spoken to Juan and Lorena—fellow teachers—and they were supportive.
She'd sent an email late Monday night advocating for the use of Moodle, a free open source course management system. Though brief, she had asked to meet with her boss and others this morning. Maybe she'd been too hasty to press SEND.
As she walked into the office, George the Network Director, stood near the Jacob's (their boss) office. His red face sent a message all its own. “We've got that new server yesterday and we're a Microsoft shop!” George's voice carried down the hall, more pleading than angry. As Jacob and George became aware of her, their conversation grew silent.
“Good morning,” she said warmly. “I'm wondering if we could meet about a new way of better serving our students?”
Meet the Problem
In order to help Sandra, let's
share what our hunches are
about this situation, what we know, what
we need to know to help the
person/people in this situation.

What We Know
When Sandra awoke Tuesday morning, she just knew that she had to get through to the people in her organization. For her student population, learning online could present opportunities just not possible in face to face settings. She'd already spoken to Juan and Lorena—fellow teachers—and they were supportive.

Miguel's Story – I started looking for an online space to facilitate meetings but found it easier to just setup our own.

So, we turned off Internet Information Server and installed Apache/PHP/MySQL on the Server.
Where We Ended Up
Where We Started
Apache/MySQL/PHP server: These 3 components are often referred to as "AMP" with one of the following letters in front of it to represent an operating system. For example, you'll see the term "WAMP" as representative of "Windows Apache MySQL PHP." Macintosh users might refer to it as "MAMP" and GNU/Linux users as "LAMP."
We had a server running Windows, but switched to Apache/MySQL/PHP in time.
Apache Software. . .must remain a platform upon which individuals and institutions can build reliable systems, both for experimental purposes and for mission-critical purposes.
We believe that the tools of online publishing should be in the hands of everyone, and that software companies should make their money by providing value-added services such as specialized modules and support, amongst other things.
Web Server
Database (MySQL) and web pages (PHP) that allow us to interact with the database.
Then, I started to wonder, how could we facilitate online professional learning?
How would you facilitate professional learning with Moodle (or are you already) ?
Also, how could we facilitate blended instruction for our Middle School students?
How could Moodle be used to facilitate Organizational communications?
Key Challenge #1: Optimizing eLearning Opportunities...explore this challenge in tomorrow's session.
Key Challenge #2 – How to provide in-house Moodle support with minimal “technical” expertise?
Cost?$575 to $3000
Anyone dealt with this key challenge already? If so, how?
Solution – Get Techies to Setup Server Initially but grant rights to....
PhpMyAdmin – Allows you to interact with databases
