Have you ever refused to eat something because youknew it was not good for you, and felt everyone looking at you? If you have, you know exactly how Daniel felt. If youhaven’t, imagine what it would be like to refuse to obeythe king’s command.

D aniel was just a teenager, and already he’d had a hard life. Jerusa-lem, his beautiful home, had been attacked and besieged by an

army from a heathen country until the king of Jerusalem surrendered. The king and the royal family, the leading men of the land, and all thesoldiers, craftsmen, and artists were taken prisoner. Daniel and threeof his friends were among those taken captive and probably forced tomarch the 600 or more miles to Babylon.

What a change. They’d gone from being those with the brightestfutures in their country to prisoners. But the fact that God had giventhem good health and lots of natural ability was not unnoticed inBabylon. The king, Nebuchad nezzar, instructed one of his court offi-cials to choose young men with potential from among the prisoners

and to make them Babylonians.

They would be trained to serve in theking’s court. They would learn the lan-guage and the literature. They would begiven new, Babylonian names. And theywould eat from the king’s table.

Daniel and his friends knew thatmuch in their lives was beyond theircontrol. They had no choice when their landwas conquered by the Babylonian armies. They had no choice when they weretaken prisoners to a foreign land. Theyhad no choice when they were rippedaway from their families and country. But they knew that certain things werewithin their control. No matter wherethey were, they could choose to worshipGod. They could choose to take care ofthemselves the way He had taught them

to. They could choose to glorify Him ineverything they did.

Their rst test came at dinner. Theking’s table was covered with food aHebrew boy would never eat. “But Daniel

resolved not to dele himself with theroyal food and wine, and he asked thechief official for permission not to delehimself this way” (Daniel 1:8).

Disobeying the king was no small

matter. “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink,”the court official said. “Why should hesee you looking worse than the otheryoung men your age? The king would

then have my head because of you”(verse 10).

Little did he know that eating the wayDaniel was asking to would keep himlooking good and strong and healthy. SoDaniel negotiated a settlement. “Pleasetest your servants for ten days,” he said.“Give us nothing but vegetables to eatand water to drink. Then compare ourappearance with that of the young men

who eat the royal food, and treat yourservants in accordance with what yousee” (verses 12, 13).

That sounded reasonable, so thechallenge was on. At the end of 10 daysDaniel and his friends looked healthierand more nourished than the other boys. From then on they got to eat what theywanted.

Not only did they look and feel good. They were smarter and wiser than theother students who were not takingcare of their health as God had taught. When they were presented to Nebu-chadnezzar, the king “found none

equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael andAzariah. . . . In every matter of wisdomand understanding about which theking questioned them, he found themten times better than all the magiciansand enchanters in his whole kingdom”(verses 19, 20).

Choosing what to eat may not seemlike the most important battle to ghtwhen one is a prisoner in a heathencountry. But these boys had promised tobe faithful to God, and that extended into

all areas of their lives. That meant that theywere going to honor God by taking care ofthe health He had given them.

We all make choices every day. Wecan praise God for the gifts He has givenus, and take care of them the way Hehas taught us. Just as Daniel did, we canchoose to glorify Him in everything wedo—whether we eat or drink, exerciseor sleep, breathe fresh air or trust in God.We can choose to honor our Creator ineverything we do.
