Cast on a multiple of 8 stitches onto circular needles or double-pointed needles. (See Gauge Chart to determine how many to cast on based on your gauge and desired size. Sample used 96 sts.)

Work k1, p1 rib in the round for approximately 2” / 5 cm.

Now that you have your ribbing, work a round of entrelac base triangles.

Base Triangles: row 1: K2, turn. row 2: P2, turn. row 3: K3, turn. row 4: P3, turn. row 5: K4, turn. row 6: P4, turn.

Continue in this manner, knitting and purling 1 additional stitch every 2 rows up to k8. Do not turn. 1 triangle completed. Start again from Row 1 with next 2 sts, and work triangles like this all the way around.

When you get back to the beginning, with RS facing, pick up 8 stitches going up the side of the first base triangle. Turn, and work set up row as follows (WS): P7, p2tog (1 st from this first block and 1 st from last base triangle), turn.

the note above when your hat measures at least 3 ½ - 5” / 9 – 13 cm depending on desired size.

After working the first decrease tier, on your subsequent tier, pick up 7 stitches, and decrease to 6, then work as blocks of 6. Then, for the tier after that, pick up 6 stitches, and decrease to 5. Every tier, the number of stitches in your blocks drops by one. This way, your hat starts to narrow in with every entrelac tier.

Eventually, you’ve got one stitch per entrelac block in a tier. In other words, if you had 9 blocks per tier to start with, now you have 9 stitches remaining. To finish, you can do a sewn bind-off and put a pom-pom here, or graft these last stitches together, or simply draw the yarn through the remaining sts and fasten off.
