Theme: Addiction 2020 - “Newer approaches for digital age”

Times are changing rapidly in this digital age, so are people and their

lifestyle. Couple of decades ago, substance use such as alcohol use was frowned

upon, a stark contrast from today’s scenario. Alcohol and other substances are

part of socialization and the negative connotations about it has decreased

substantially. It is alarming that substance use finds active encouragement in

upper strata of society. Technological advancement has outpaced the social

changes. High speed internet, efficient smartphones, cheaper data and

competitively priced gadgets have made digital revolution accessible to vast

sections of populations. Current generation of Children have exposure to digital

devices like no other generation before them, from a very early age. Although

substance use and substance dependence have different clinical implications, the

gap between them is narrowing down at fast pace. Research and clinical expertise

in the area of addiction has increased leaps and bounds in recent years, but,

social changes and technological advancement supporting substance use

disorders have remained one step ahead of us. It poses problems to a large section

of population, especially young and productive persons. For many, it might be

too late before they realize the perils of substance use in their lives.

While dealing with older and emerging addictions in the challenging social and

technological contexts, are we better placed with traditional interventions or

should we change gears and explore new ways of intervention?
